I print a test page on my ET8550 a couple time a month just to keep any issues at bay and do a head cleaning periodically if I see any problems. Using a tank based ink delivery system does away with much of the headaches of cartridges. I know I’ll NEVER go back to using cartridges again. Even my day to day inkjet is an Epson EcoTank printer, ET2800.
My ET2800 was from Epson as a refurb. Still going strong in day to day operation after about 3 years. Stays powered on 24x7, going to sleep and waking up to print and back to sleep. All of my printers are kept like that.
Canon selphy cp1500: https://a.co/d/9fYqM3J Selphy printer paper/ink I use: https://a.co/d/dF9nIUC Inkjet printer: https://a.co/d/iHwwP46 I really like the ink for this printer. Hope any of this helps!!
We have an Epson ET2810. It works well. Wi-fi enabled so prints whatever is on your screen. Ink has lasted. Quality is fine.
The 2800 is awesome. I really don’t think there’s a need to go any more expensive than that for proxies unless you absolutely must print directly onto the same cardstock WotC and other companies use for their TCGs.
I've printed over a dozen decks with the 2800. No complaints at all and I still have over a half tank of ink on all colors.
Get an Epson EcoTank ET-2800. The ink costs on cartridge printers are way too high. While the ET-2800 is a 4-color printer, it can print photos fairly well. You can also look into the ET-8500, if you're looking for a dedicated photo printer. tl;dr: The more you pay for your printer the less you pay for your ink. Buy the EcoTank. Spending the money up front is highly recommended for lower ink costs and less frustration from tiny ink cartridges. For comparison, the $299 (all prices CAD), consumer-level, cartridge printer (in this case the XP-8800) uses cartridges that are 9.3 mL (color) and 11.2 mL (black) for high capacity cartridges and 4.1 mL (color) and 5.5 mL (black) for standard capacity cartridges that would each cost about $33.49 (XL color) and $29.09 (XL black) to $17.49 (standard color/black) _each_ **($197 for 57.7 mL or $105 for 26 mL of ink vs. $94 for 280 mL of ink)**. The reason for this is that printer hardware may cost $450 alone, and add to that the cost of inks included in the printer. When a printer is sold at breakeven or a loss, the profit has to be recovered with the supplies. When you purchase an EcoTank printer, you’re paying for the hardware, so there’s no need to “make-up” for the loss. There’s an inverse relationship between printer and ink cost.
I have et2800 and love it. Prefer to 2850. Roughly 220$ brand new. If you want next setup, look at any ET 4xxx. That is if you plan to print a lot or whole decks. Any EcoTank will serve the best purpose for that.
All in all, if you are looking for home use, i would recommend [Epson EcoTank ET‑2800](https://gadgetglides.blogspot.com/2025/07/epson-ecotank-et2800-review-cartridge.html?m=1) the quality is great for me.
Roller marks problem how to fix: Get better quality paper (also some printers if you select thick paper on configurations, also make it leave less roller marks, don't know if this is the case). Or Get a printer that is more focused for photos. (right now the cheapest are the canon G5/6XX series). If you don't find them, then the Epson ET8500/8550 (they do still leave some roller marks but with better quality paper they are fine). Or the epson ET 8100/18100 (it's ink does not have lightfastness). I only recommend ink tank printers for most uses cases. If you are going for pro level printing and going to sell them for high price then there are the Canon Pixma Pro Line, and Epson Surecolor p700/900. About your brother, well i don't recommend because it's a cartridge printer(seriously this black that you used could easily be like 3-5% of all of it's black ink). I would return if still possible. And purchase any ink tank.(If you won't print like 40+ documents pages or 5+ photos a month then it's a fine printer, more than this only if you convert it for ciss or use somekind of compatible cartridge). Edit: Ohh and about consumer level printer that you want mostly for documents, and then some photos. Canon Megatank GXXXX series. And Epson ET 2/4XXX series, then you will compare price and what they offer, like duplex, in case of epson a4 borderless as well. IF you want fewer features but better photos, some epson have 4 dye ink that are better for printing on cheaper glossy ink (you can check if their black tank is the same size as the colored tanks, if it is the same size then it's ink is dye).
Epson ecotank with 4 dye ink (you can see if the model has 4 dye ink by looking at the tanks if they all have the same size). Canon G5XX/G6XX Series. They use 6 INK, with extra Red and Gray. It's ink is more expensive but it's a almost pro level ink for photography that has great lightfastness. But with this printer you will not want to print a lot of documents/non photo because of it's ink price (check for the price if you think it's acceptable). But the ink price is not an extortion, it's just the quality itself.
IRC, for temporary tattoo you need pigmented ink??? Search the paper that does the transfer to see. I would never buy any of the printers that you put on the post, because all of them you will pay more than one with ink tank, with one or two refill. So i recommend entry level canon G3000 series, if you can pay a bit more go for a higher end one. Maybe the g6000 series for auto duplex. About ink, if it really requires pigmented ink for it(and i'm almost sure it does), then or you stick with only black. Or you purchase a canon GX line, the gx2000 would work. But they are a bit more expensive, and the ink aswell, and the ink is not great for glossy paper. But all the inks are pigmented. Or you can just purchase the et 2800, and only use non-oem pigmented ink in it, but you will lose warranty, and require you to print often so it does not dry out, specially as it would be pigmented.
Get the ET-2800, it is the best option unless you want to shell out $600+.
The ET-2800 specs list photo paper up to 300 gsm. Compared to the ET-2980, the 2800 is cheaper, has a higher print resolution, and uses dye based black ink. Not using pigment ink for black automatically makes it better than the 2980.
