I've always had excellent luck with the "$50 special" Epson 4200s. Enough that when traveling just to use, then donate it at end of use. This is a cartridge printer. Quiet, fast, duplex scanning and printing for list price of < $100. There are a couple tank models in same range, where aftermarket ink refills are an option. Tried an entry level HP, one of the inkscam ones. Noisy... sounded like a hard rock mine in operation. Did a pretty good scan/print job.
