Based on 1 year's data from Feb 24, 2026 How it works
I have both. I stopped using Instax because of the cost of the film; CP1500 costs $33 for 108 postcard-sized sheets. What I usually do, if I want smaller photos, is print 2 or 4 per sheet, and they end up being a similar size to Instax Mini or Wide for 10% of the price. There's a Canon Selphy QX20 that prints Instax-sized photos, but the paper costs much more. I don't recommend Kodak ZINK or 3-step film; I've tried them, and they're terrible.
Canon Selphy 1500 prints 4x6 and can either print from the phone app, USB connection, or print directly from an SD card. I think it also allows for some Canon cameras to directly connect to it as well. You can either plug in or buy a battery separately for use anywhere. It's quite small, but not exactly pocketable. Still easy enough to bring around to parties though. For pocketable I think your only options are ones that require a phone app like the Fuji Instax "printer". I put that in quotes because it's really just a polaroid style film unit. price per print is higher than the selphy, for quite small images. You can also get the Instax Wide printer for larger images, closer to regular polaroid size. But these will only print with a phone app. There's no other connection method.
Polaroid only makes one “printer” that makes “Polaroid looking” pictures, and that’s the Lab. To use this, you have to buy this product and their Polaroid film. The upside is it will print you little Polaroid pictures on their classic format, the negative is that Polaroid film is a little more expensive. Personally, I’d rather shoot the real deal than just print stuff. https://www.polaroid.com/en_us/printers/lab-printer Instax by Fujifilm is another option, and they have three size formats, Wide, Square, and Mini. They also make two camera-printer hybrids that snap a pic and then print on demand. I own one of these, and it goes both ways. Snap a pic, hit print, send that pic to your phone, or take a pic with your phone, send it to the camera, hit print. I own the Wide Evo. https://instax.com/wide_evo/en/ But they also make the Mini Evo. https://instax.com/mini_evo/en/ Finally, Instax also makes just printers in all three of their formats. https://instax.com/printer/ Instax is usually cheaper. I always prefer shooting with a Polaroid camera though. I own three, so far. Occasionally, I’ll switch it up and use Instax. I own an Instax Wide 210 for analog shooting, and the Instax Evo Wide for parties and printing out funny Internet memes to mail to people. Finally, there are a plethora of 4 x 6 printers that are incredibly economical, Canon Selphy, the Polaroid Hi-Print, the Liene Amber. They’re cost-effective, the prints come in boxes like envelopes, however, these do not have the little borders. These are just photo print makers. Best of luck. Let me know if you have any questions.
Canon ivy 2 is the simplest, but it depends on the look youre going for. Instax also makes just photo printers, kodak, the slephy by canon ect. Take a look at each one and decide what you think looks best. I prefer no boarders so I went with an ivy also the sheets are sticker paper, but I do love the quality of prints form my old instax wide printer:)
I have the instax wide and the older CP1300 and the CP1300 is way better quality. The instax is better when traveling and printing out random pics for friends on trips. The quality of the pics is lower but still fun to have around.
I print my GFX photos on the instax wide printer and they come out super sharp!
So firstly - there's no wrong way to use Instax Printer/Phone or Evo. It comes down to preference - but the most important point is that both phone cameras and evo cameras are digital pictures at the end of the day. Some people use their phone as their only camera and that's fine! I personally don't like the way cel phones, even the fancy flagship ones have their own post processing - they look clearly taken on a cell phone. The evo series has a basic white balance and that's a part of the retro (but not film) appeal. I took my Evo Wide along with my Nikon ZFC to an anime convention and took pictures of cosplayers. I took both a quick one with the Wide Evo and sent the higher quality ones later once they were edited. The evo wide prints were immediately ready and I can do more quickshoots with it... but I can tell you when trying to print quickly on the wide printer (i have one as well) can be a hassle when switching from camera to the print app and having to reconnect the bluetooth, the image being downsized (the app automatically downsizes the image which takes a few seconds - so high megapixels don't really matter) before it sends the data to the printer... and you can't use your phone while its printing. So again, its a matter of preference.
I like the Instax Wide Link. Recharchable battery (though unfortunately does use microUSB to charge) and prints on Fuji Instax wide which I think look great.
hey when you start up your instax wide printer does it print a blank polaroid everytime? mine does and it’s annoying as fuck lol. it’ll print a blank if i open the back and close it and when im just turning it on normally to use it.
A big thing to know about the Canon Selphy printer is that it has to be plugged in, i.e. mains powered. There is a Canon NB-CP2LH Battery Pack, but I think it's been discontinued. You can buy third-party clone batteries, though. Another way to make the Selphy portable is to buy a USB-C to DC 5.5 x 2.5mm barrel jack cable and connect it to a power bank (like for your phone): [How I Print Photos on The Go... \(with the Canon Selphy\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STCSwmp9hTY) by The Secret Life of Nicholas Schraml However, the power bank needs to output enough power to drive the printer. The video has more details. Some other instant printers to consider: Fujifilm Instax Link Wide - I love this for the ability to add a QR code to a picture. The QR code could be a link to an Instagram page, a Google album for all the pictures from the birthday, an audio message (I think it gets deleted automatically after a year though) or a map location. Kodak Mini 3 ERA Hope this helps.
