I can answer this question. My bedroom is about 25m\^3 and I have an Arlec 3.3KW 11000 BTU I bought a few weeks ago. And it's brilliant. It keeps my room at about 25 degrees on a 35 degree day (outdoors), and 22 on a 30 degree day, and that's with a gaming PC as well. My room is double brick but not facing sunlight however. I firmly believe everyone that says they're useless has either lived with proper aircon before, or their room is too big for the portable unit they bought. They don't understand what it's like to sweat your arse off the entire day and not be able to fall asleep until 4 in the morning in a near 30 degree room for the entirety of a heatwave. It's true suffering. If you're going through 30 degree days in your room both in the day and at night, then anything will do. Just getting the temp down to 25 is a godsend and will allow you to function once again. Sure they're inefficient. Conceptually they are not practical. They're also loud. And don't cool as much as other forms of aircon. But like I said, it's the difference between suffering and functioning. You'll just need the pipe running outside the window which from your pictures should be doable. Seal the gaps up with any material, I used the metal piece that came with my unit and sealed the rest of the gaps with duct tape (my window slides upwards/downwards). It doesn't need to look pretty. Keep all other windows and doors closed. Also don't know what your room size is, the smaller the room the better the results, even if the unit advertises higher BTUs or whatever I imagine there's a limit to how effective these machines can be. Only other issue is the noise for sleep, I sleep with AirPods in so it's not a problem for me. However you can just cool the room before you sleep and at night your room should remain cool enough for at least a couple of hours. Always buy a stronger advertised BTU than your room size needs according to the calculations.
Got myself this. Abit loud, but not gonna be issues compared to the heat. Just treat it like white noise, cool down the room straight away. Only trouble is that you have to secure the pipe to the windows for blowing the hot air out of the house. https://www.bunnings.co.nz/arlec-3-3kw-11000-btu-portable-air-conditioner_p0369719
I was very dubious of portable aircons but bought one last year and it’s been great- A 3kw Arlec from Bunnings. Evaporative so you have to vent it outside. Some (especially those with humidifiers) collect water (not my model). Small and while noisey, not worse than my large fan. No, it’s not as good as a split system (or other built in systems) but it keeps my open plan two bedroom unit bearable even in the worst heat, and cool in the immediate area it’s pumping out the air. Would be great in a single room. I recommend 3kw.
Completely disagree with the other comments. If you have a heat pump in one room then they work great because while they’re cooling they also suck the cold air into the room from the rest of the house. I have an Arlec one from Bunnings and regret not buying it sooner. I’ve also only had to drain it once in the year or so that I’ve had it, but I do also have a dehumidifier in another room. It’s also not that loud, I don’t have any trouble sleeping with it on. Actually way less trouble sleeping than when I didn’t have it and was hot all night.
We’ve an Arlec and we stick the hose out the window. If I sit next to it it’s good but it won’t cool down a large room.
I bought an arlec one a few years ago, its been great. It was $450 at the time. My thinking was that if I ever sell it I'll do so in summer and get a bunch of it back. It's been so handy I'm not sure if I'll ever get rid of it.
mine is 2.6kw so around 75c/ hour if you were paying 30c/kwh. Portable aircons are less efficient than heat pumps so would be more expensive.
