I have a 10,000 btu Costway which I purchased in Canada from Walmart. I think it is great. It is rated for 350 sq.ft and it cools my living room and kitchen which run in a straight line from where I have my unit set up. It does not cool my bedroom very well but I do what I can with a portable fan that I have set up in the hall directing some cool air into my bedroom. It has two speeds with the higher speed being quite loud to run (and the lower speed is not quiet either but more bearable). For a small portable a/c unit, it works really great.

There are quite a few portable ACs out there, so you’ve got plenty of choices. Since you mainly want to cool a single large room, deciding on your budget first helps narrow it down. I’m currently using a portable ac(one Costway model), and while I haven’t gone through a full summer yet, it’s been doing a decent job for short periods in my apartment. Dual-hose units often feel more efficient and quieter than single-hose ones, though they usually cost more. For occasional use, even a mid-range unit like this can take the edge off a hot room without being overwhelming.
