>`you have the noisy hot part of the AC inside your house instead of outside.` Mine has the option of putting the hose on the **front**. e.g. if I had a balcony, I could put the unit outside, and hose the cold air in. Currently have it setup with a hose on the front *and* back, so, without even moving the unit, I can point the front hose to which room I need.

I have one of those, an Airflex 1400 - I was trying to find them online for the OP, but they seem to have gone altogether. Saw a second hand one on eBay for 200 quid. Ours goes in my workroom, which is the hottest room in the house. After work, the pipe goes on, aimed towards the bedroom & living room & we (mostly) shut the door on it to keep the noise in. If you need the extra warmth, in winter you can turn it round & use it to heat. Designed to do just that. And, yes, also designed to live outdoors with a pipe pushing through a vent in the wall. Trouble is, we live on the third floor, no balcony.

i bought a 14,000 btu aircon 5 years ago for heating and cooling. In summer the living room would hit 40c in the day, and the bedroom would be 33c at night. After aircon its now 22c during the day (my choice cos i like cheap eleccy bills), and i'll take anything 24c or less to sleep at night. As a fun experiment i did get down to 17c on a day it was 35c outside... so its pretty decent. Mine cools a 6x4 metre living room, and the hallway just fine, and if i keep the bedroom door open, usually airflow keeps the bedroom at 24c. Generally you will need to suck cold air out the room with a tower fan, and another fan to suck cold air into the bedroom, if they are on the same side of the hallway. if on opposite sides then you can get away with sucking the air across with just 1 tower fan. Highest temperature differential i've had was -5c outside, 22c inside, so a 27c difference. I got an airflex15 refurb from appliancesdirect . it uses 1kwh so i set sensible temps so the compressor runs half the time or less per hour. That way the eleccy bill is 12p/hr or £1.44 for 12 hrs. Sometimes when the nighttime temp is 25c+ outside you'll have to commit to running it all night too, just to keep the temp under 25c. I had 3 nights of 28c temp outside last year, that drove me to that. I live in a flat with neighbours on all sides... noone in 5 years has minded when i asked them about noise, cos i use 3 inches of carpet underneath, and i absolutely avoid running it after 10pm, and before 8am unless absolutely necessary. Sure its noisy .... but feeling like your dying from heat and jumping in a bath of cold water every hour to escape it in the worst of summer isnt worth the aggro. Besides i save money on not needing ice drinks, or ice cream, and i get to laugh at everyone who complains about the heat or cold. Whats most important about aircon is efficiency in sealing any leaks, dual hosing if possible, if not then running the temp as high as is comfortable so not to cause negative air pressure, and generally making the room airtight, and insulated . The longer the cold air stays the less the compressor has to run, which translates to less money, and peace and quiet. Mine has an auto fan mode which i mostly use, but it is possible to use low fan mode and then its not too annoying, but honestly its just better to suck it up and wait for it to reach temp then turn it off for 4 hours. Hope this wall of text helps.p.s. i spent all day bathing in 22c heat cost £1.24.... If you can find someone running a gas thermostat at 22c i'll be mightily impressed by the depth of their pockets.

Got an Electriq one too that gets dragged out of the garage every year for a few weeks. Been going for about 6 or 7 years now. It is noisy, and heavy, but it cools our lounge down nicely. I cut some cardboard strips to stick in the gap in the sliding patio doors above the hose, and just pull a curtain across to hide them.

Literally any portable AC unit will be fine. I went with the cheap option at the time, got a refurbished Elecriq model off Appliance Direct back in 2018, it's still going strong. Blowing cool air at me as we speak! Added another one of the same brand for the bedroom in 2023. Unfortunately, you've picked the worst possible time to buy as prices are dynamic on these things and when it's hot they'll be expensive, when it's winter it'll be cheaper, but needs must. The key thing to bear in mind is the output capacity. The BTU (British thermal units) rating. What you need will depend on the size of your room. But the higher the BTU the better. If you can find a 15000BTU+ unit it'll get even the largest open-plan living space down to arctic temps. You probably don't want to go below 10000 BTU or it'll feel a bit anaemic. Your budget might be a bit low... I'd add £100 to that or you'll probably end up with a pretty low power version. Also top tip, if you can get a smart one that's got wifi that's a bonus as you'll be Abel to turn it on from the sofa an hour os so before you go to bed and blast the room cold on full power, so when you get in to bed you can turn it down to the lowest setting to maintain that temp so it's less noisy.

Electriq are very good. My ten year old one is noisy but still works. Just got one of the new smart ones. Runs fairly quietly on low fan speed.

The new ones run much quieter. Apparently the medium one is one of the quietest on the market, but I bought the bigger one. What I didn’t realise at the time about the Electriq is that the condensate is used to get a bit more cooling power out of the unit.
