"We can chill the room to a temperature that I need the duvet and jammies to sleep in a heat wave."

"it works really well ... it got delivred a couple of days prior to that big heatwave where it was 40 deg.C; we al slept really well in the cool"

"Essential for the hot summers we have now. ... And essential for me. I work in a 2x3m hand build (and very well insulated) garden office. Once the ambient temperature is high, I'm sweating in there. It's bliss with it on."

"My Meaco costs about £1.5 a day (it runs 15 minutes per hour from 7am to 10pm), and considering we have maybe 10 proper heatwave days per month, and only 3 months of summer where these heatwaves can happen, that's totally worth it."

"I run mine 15 minutes per hour from 7am to 10pm. Then outside temperatures tend to drop below inside temperatures. You don't have to have it on literally all day for it to work. I think I've paid maybe £10 so far this summer to not feel the heatwaves at all."

"the kit with outs is like a big Velcro on sock with zips so you can really fit it to the window. ... Our window opens outward but vertically but there’s a massive amount of excess material that I’m fairly certain it could fit all sorts of combos of shape."

"It came with two different window kits, so hopefully one of them will work."

"However they are portable and easy to store elsewhere in winter"

"Bring it into the back bedroom some nights too."

Those Meaco units are great! I bought the 10000BTU unit to cool the house as we have a baby, the baby doesn't like it for some reason and prefers to sleep without it. My win though as our bedroom was a cool 19°c when downstairs was 28°c. I think A/C will be pretty standard in the UK in 5/10 years time.

I have one, got it from costco its on the louder side but in terms of everything else cant fault it cools my room down nicely. Did end up buying a longer exhaust hose as the one provided is on the short side.

I bought a meaco 10K BTU one last year which triggered the coldest wettest summer for ages 😂 Luckily I fooled the weather by getting one that could heat as well as cool. I put some insulation over the exhaust hose to reduce the radiant heat from that, and cobbled together a window board that slots into an open casement window, and seals pretty well. The hose attaches to a 150mm ducting 'wall kit' from toolstation which in turn is vented out through the board. The unit itself does not get hot, other than the hose. And yes single hose is less efficient than dual, but that's all we can get here so... shrug.

r/DIYUK • Anyone here using small AC machines to cool the air in a small room for heatwaves? Looking for recommendations, preferably Amazon i.e. can get it quickly. TIA ->

Meaco have an eBay store where they sell "refurbished" units, I bought a 10,000 BTU model for £160 a few months ago, with 2 year warranty. As far as I could see it was brand new.

Nabbed one from them on a Black Friday deal a couple of years ago and it's absolutely transformed my summer sleep quality. Having solar panels on the house also minimises the energy costs beyond a quick burst in the evening to cool the room before going to bed.

If that's a meaco you can 3d print an adapter and add a second hose to make it more effective https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNdH85QtD/

I've got a Meaco dehumidifier and now a Meaco AC, my Meaco collection is growing. Is that the stream deck buttons next to your keyboard? Can you provide a link to that digital time thingy you have on your desk.

We used to have a Meaco one from Costco within that price range, and that broke within a year. Since then we tried an AEG one which was terrible, and now have a De’Longhi Pinguino. It looks like Currys have a couple near your price range. We also have a still working De’Longhi dehumidifier which is probably old enough to vote, and so while now I’ve praised them on the internet I’m sure they’ll both break immediately, I have some faith in the brand. Would definitely suggest considering spending a little extra on one of the Pinguinos if you can.

I've got a meaco just like this one, might even be the exact same model, and the window kit it came with works fine on my outward opening windows

Mine is a Meaco one with the hose out the window and works very well for cooling a room and making it less humid, it is quite noisy though and the window kit is a bit of a faff

We have a Meaco portable one, it's very loud but it works really well. You just need a little window sash kit for the exhaust tube. I bought it some years ago and it got delivred a couple of days prior to that big heatwave where it was 40 deg.C; we al slept really well in the cool, I got it because I was worried about my then baby.

Went for a Meaco because we also have a Meaco dehumidifier. Set it up on Sunday, turned it on, had amazingly cold air blowing out the front for around 30 seconds, then it sounded like the compressor kicked in, and it completely reversed, with hot air coming out the front, and the cold air going out the window. Repeatable every single time. Meaco support is trash, so am returning the faulty one, and the new one arrives tomorrow. Second time lucky, hopefully.

We have two of these units. They do very well, even with the window needing to be open. There is a window kit that comes with them usually that I’d suggest installing. They aren’t as efficient as closed systems so you are still getting hot air in through the window gap. Also bugs can be a problem getting in through the window kit. Can be a bit noisy. However they are portable and easy to store elsewhere in winter, and it makes all these hot days bearable if not downright chilly wherever it’s installed (we have one in bedroom as well). Doesn’t seem to cost too much to run but I never really calculated it. I think it’s around 30p/hour, Meaco. We bought ours in the summer. It might be a bit cheaper in winter but never priced them at that time. I think they’re well worth it. Wouldn’t be able to live through a summer without one now!

We have a meaco too. It’s brilliant. We can chill the room to a temperature that I need the duvet and jammies to sleep in a heat wave. Sorry edit to say the kit with outs is like a big Velcro on sock with zips so you can really fit it to the window. Our window opens outward but vertically but there’s a massive amount of excess material that I’m fairly certain it could fit all sorts of combos of shape.

We bought a Meaco one from Costco last year. Was around £250 from memory. Noisy bet pretty effective. We tend to use it for 30mins before bed - doubt you could sleep with it on unless you are used to 747 on take off levels of noise.

We have a Meaco. It’s loud but you get used to it and it’s quite effective. Use per room. Cooled one bedroom from 28 to 21 in about an hour. Obviously the time warms up once it’s turned off, quite quickly

Yes! Got a meacocool or something like that. Essential for the hot summers we have now. And essential for me. I work in a 2x3m hand build (and very well insulated) garden office. Once the ambient temperature is high, I'm sweating in there. It's bliss with it on. Bring it into the back bedroom some nights too. It's a good send. It's noisy though. Sleeping with it on isn't the easiest

I bought one of these about 4 years ago. A mecco one. It was really noisy and a pain to get the hose out of the room. It didn't really work that well. You could only really feel the coolness directly in the breeze which was very blowy and had no option to make it gentler. No I have I stalled proper air con with an outside unit and the inside units attached to the wall. But I can't get it in all the rooms in the house. They are 100 times better than the portable one I bought 4 years ago. You can barely hear it and it's freezing cold in the winter and warms up a room really fast in the summer. Have portable ones gotten better and quieter? Id still be interested in buying one to fill the gap in the house i have.
