"The pairing is reliable and has worked with at least a dozen devices, which is more than I can say for a lot of Bluetooth devices I’ve used."

If you can get the Soundcore Boost v2, get that. Nice step up. If you're willing to go a little bigger, then get the Soundcore Motion+.
Those soundcore ones are pretty poor and reflective of the price. If it's within budget go for the Soundcore Boost Upgraded
Not sure on US pricing however the Soundcore Boost may fit your needs, or the Motion 300 depending on how much that will cost you.
As you say your aging ears probably prefer a bright sound and more balanced speakers sound muddy for the same reason. Id pickup my soundcore boost before the flip 6 but its so warm you would find it unlistenable. Given your ears i wonder if you tried the motion plus?
I have two bluetooth speakers, both from Anker: a SoundCore Boost that I mainly use in my kitchen and living room with my laptop as a soundbar (Laptop speakers are tinny); and a SoundCore 2 in the bedroom and upstairs bathroom / shower, connected to my phone.
I purchased JBL flip 6 and returned it after 2 days. It sounded a bit dull and mono. I had anker soundcore boost which sounded much better to me with deeper bass and smoother highs.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bluetooth_Speakers/s/VgHeiTth26 one of my posts comparing the two… notice the bass depth in the anker vs the jbl
Dont know about others maybe they love that sound signature. But my anker soundcore boost sounded better to me and i have sound samples recorded earlier. Jbl does great in party speakers and boombox, but no so much in compact speakers.
Anker Soundcore Boost. Will fill a small room with mind boggling bass. Around 40 dollars on Amazon.
Depends what music you listen to probably, I like the Soundcore Boost. Normally I listen to psydub, ambient, edm. It’s great imho for that genre.
I have an Anker Soundcore Boost bluetooth speaker. It comes with an app that allows you to adjust the eq AND turn off the annoying start up sound. It was under $50 us but seems to meet your basic requirements. I use it to listen to music at my office.
The best soundcore you can afford. I’ve had the soundcore 2, boost upgraded, and motion plus. Two for true wireless stereo. I got two motion plus for 140 refurbished. They sound beautiful I think and are not bass heavy.
I’ve been using the Anker soundcore. Good price and great audio quality.
Not entirely sure but if pop in anker soundcore on amazon you’ll find the portable speaker. It’s usually on a deal between 25-30
