Get 1-2 pieces of HK Go+Play 3, or HK Onyx. As stated earlier, nothing will beat these at combined indoor+terrace/lawn/outdoor use, with reasonable portability and sound quality. Not even close. Further strengthened by the fact that you can get that set below $300 for a pair. I have 2x GP3 and I took the best sound to places never thought possible. Oh, before that I had 2x Go Play Mini, and before that 2x Go+Play powered by D batteries.
If size really doesn't matter, used hk go play 2 should be doable if you are patient, otherwise new its hard, I personally like the ult field 1, but its on the more boomy side. But can be adjusted via app. Nice to extend to stereo though if you want to upgrade later.
Yeah, both the HK Go+Play and Onyx Studio series would blow away the Max. They are my go-to speakers when I want the music to really shine through. Incredibly deep bass and crystal clear mids and highs. None of my other 5 portable Bluetooth speakers come close. Edit - Just saw someone post the HK Go+Play 3 is selling on ebay for $132 right now. At that price, it's a no brainer.
If you're "upgrading", go to the next level.. not the same speaker in a different housing. Look for a used HK Studio Onyx. Pick the style you like the look of and hear your music in a truly upgraded fashion. Even the 10-15 year old ones still sound awesome. The HK Go+Play series is just as good too. Either one will blow you away over what you had.
It would certainly be nice to get some real kippel type frequency response curves for all these bluetooth speakers. Most of the ones on Rtings are either outrageously expensive or they are too bass boosted. The Harmon Kardon Play looks really good, and one of Alan Ross's favorites. But it's pricey. Another good one is the Sonos line. But you have to plug them in and there is no app. I think the problem is that people buy bass boosted speakers because they are initially attracted to them. So designers get in on the game, and we can't have flat frequency responses. I have given up and right now I am listening to my little xSound Go because it is clear in the highs and is not boomy.
The Harmon Kardon Studio and Go play speakers have a fat low end and go on sale for much less than the Brane. Good "indoor" speaker but not as tough as JBL/Soundcore/Bose designs.
