I read plenty of reviews and purchased a few disappointing speakers, recently stumbled across a used boombox 3 for $200 and just went for it and I been very impressed on how good it actually sounds. I think when this one gives out I will replace with yet another boombox 3 or a PartyBox because I have yet to be let down by a JBL but my trick is I always get them on a sale, clearance or used lol

technically yea true i did feel the difference between the bb3 bass and pb120 bass both plugged in, but if you just plug your bb3 in and unplug the pb120 they literally are soo close to the same amount of bass. and when you own one and not both i assure everybody in the world that you wont recognise any difference. i do gotta say tho, when listening to songs with both lots of bass or little bass the bb3 sounds clearer as it has different drivers for the low, mid, and highs as far as i know, i dont know too much technically about boxes

Had a boombox 3, switched to a soundboks Go, for outdoor use and portability, love the soundbox. From volume to battery life to ruggedness, it checks all the boxes.

That’s a great question, for 1 it’s fully waterproof, vs splash resistant. If you’re going for absolute sound quality indoors/garage, it beats the GO with a more well rounded sound at losers volumes. My biggest complaint is that it will roll over with the slightest bump. While this may sound trivial it’s so so annoying using it in the bed of my truck or on the boat or even transporting it. Just rolls everything and get scratched up in the process.

If you're able to find a boombox 3 for around 400$, go for it. If not, i think you'll be just fine with any of the tribit stormbox blasts, even the first gen which is still a very good speaker with a long battery life. You can get the second gen ofc as well. These are solid options that i prefer the most for long outdoor usage and durability.

Jbl partybox 320, king x20 or boombox 3, those are your best bets tbh. The x20 holds its bass the best at higher volumes. Boombox 3 sounds the best as a portable speaker and the 320 is a loud party machine with deep hitting bass, got no clue how it would perform outside though.

I have a lot of Bluetooth speakers. My top 3 picks are Orange Box, Sonos Move 2, and JBL Boombox 3. Orange box gets LOUD and is crystal clear (and portable!) although it doesn’t have quite a bit of bass. Sounds best with rock/jazz/blues/country. Boombox 3 is also LOUD and has loads of bass. However, it is very large and heavy. Move 2 is the perfect mix of both. No matter where I plop it, it sounds incredible. If I were to get rid or two of them, I would probably keep the Move 2.

Of the four, definitely the Boombox 3. If money is no object in your decision and you want a branded product, it's not a bad choice. You get the best price-performance ratio with the EarFun UBOOM X. It is more compact and noticeably lighter than any of the other four, i.e. easier and more comfortable to carry around, if that is relevant for your father. In terms of sound, you make no compromises. The boombox is slightly more bass-heavy, while the UBOOM X sounds very balanced and can be adjusted very well in the app with EQs to suit different listening situations.

Wonderboom is a classic. Get battery and great surround sound for it's size. For a picnic table outside it does a satisfying job. It's the #1 rated BT speaker by the NY Times. Of course there's bigger and better, but one has to remember that BT portable speakers are supposed to be portable and scratch that itch adequately. A heavy JBL BB3 really really stretched the red line of what's portable. Full stop, BT speakers will NEVER replace a good home sound system. Plus the batteries will brick the device in a few years when it loses its charge....So really, spending large amounts is futile for something that should be considered a disposable razor. And if you're really willing to spend more than $150, you better really use it more than twice a week otherwise you're losing money on that ticking time bomb of a battery which is permanently draining its strength month by month...unless it's a portabke plug in, which is the ultimate recommendation.

Hi I own a flip 6, 2x charge 5, xtreme 3 and a boom box 2 If you are looking for portability i would go for the flip 6/7. The f6 weighs about 500 grams and sounds good for the size. It's loud enough for outside, but I wouldn't use it for loud music with more people If you just looking for loud music outside and the weight isn't much important i would recommend Going for 2 charge 5's (maybe price dropped because of the release from charge 6)I can guarantee this is peak quality in music and both speakers together weighs about 2kg) xtreme 4 in comparison beats this setup, but Not as much As the boombox 3 would. The boombox 3 is a beast for outside but it weighs also 6700g which is a huge increase of weight. Basswhise the boom box 3 is spectacular. It Can also perform really good till Volume 70-80.

I have had the boombox 3 in the past and i was hoping this would be the upgrade. The karaoke feature is super nice since I do a lot of singing. Works well with a mic The bass feels artificial when compared to the boombox. Overall the sound is a bit cannier when compared to the Boombox comparable to the soundcores… I’m really hoping this speaker grows on me and i love it in the long run since i cannot return it anymore. Maybe its just that its lacking the wow factor right out of the box like the JBL had

There are insane sales which makes comparison difficult. For example, here are sales prices I've found from big stores: - Boombox 3: 200e (from 599e) - Partybox Stage 320: 299e (from 599e) - Partybox Stage 120: 199e (from 399e) - Xtreme 4: 199e (from 349e) - Partybox 710: 319e (ftom 799e) I think all these are or and have been insane deals. I would say that Boombox 3 at 200e is maybe the best "worth it" for most, but for those wanting bigger sound Stage 320 at 299e was even better deal (these are the two JBLs I bought from this list at these prices).

It's very good for the weight. The recent firmware updates fixed the compression at high volumes. I'm only keeping it because I managed to get most of it expensed with my job otherwise at that price I'd rather deal with a less convenient form-factor and stick with JBL Boombox 3. For purely its sound quality for the weight/form factor I don't believe there's better in the industry right now. For the sound quality/price, Boom 2 easily. Xtreme 4 is not an invalid competitor but it loses ALL of its bass at 70% or higher volume which the Bose managed to keep. Bass is even a little too much at times I prefer to put it on -3 in the EQ. It's extremely "Beachable" and extremely easy to carry around. The rubber is also not that rubber that wears off and becomes "sticky". I've seen people call it a purse but I don't have low self-esteem so I guess it never bothered me.

r/Bluetooth_Speakers • What Are Your Thoughts on the Bose Soundlink Max? ->
Reddit Icon
InappropriateCanuck • about 1 year ago

Simply put, if you're even remotely on the fence, I would not get it. You have to be 100% certain that you ABSOLUTELY ONLY want this form factor to power ratio. I'll try my best to answer this because it is a bit of a tricky thing. After 4 more days of listening to it, overall for sound quality as I am at the most recent firmware (4.3.30 as of now) and **I don't hear the issues of distortion** that others talk about or that I have even heard in videos at all. However, after listening to it more, I can "sort of hear" very rarely some compression at the 90% to 100% volume to prevent that distortion. It is substantially less than prior firmwares. Both Xtreme 4 and Boom 2 have their own way to manage distortion. Xtreme 4 drops the bass completely after 70% or higher. Boom 2 just lets it distort. The bass is very overbearing on the Soundlink max so-much-so sometimes that I'm permanently -3'ing it in the EQ. That being said, the Bose Soundlink Max is SUBSTANTIALLY louder than both the Boom 2 and the Xtreme 4. 90% volume across the 3 (so when I can sort of hear artifacts) is NOT equivalent AT ALL. The Bose is INCREDIBLY loud. If I had to try to equate them volumes, 85% Volume Bose SoundLink Max == 95% Xtreme 4 >= 100% Boom 2. Which bring me to my next question, how often do you need something so loud from something so small? Dunno. Honestly 80% is way fine for me. 60% max indoors. So to summarize, the *very rare* compressions only can happen at volumes that I do not regularly use the Max at. I'd just like to note that I did have 2 more issues that everyone "Certified me as normal" (probably because shilling). There is SUBSTANTIAL parasitic drain. Think 20%-25% battery in 2 weeks. The battery also gets MURKED at 80% volume. It's normal that it drains more, but the drainage was insane. The drain wasn't anywhere near that intense on the JBL Xtreme 4 at high volumes. So to repeat myself, unless you REALLY WANT THE FORM FACTOR (and this was huge for me), I'd upgrade to the JBL Boombox 3 for bigger sound or stick to the Xtreme 4 and Boom 2 if you want to keep the form factor. Favoring Boom 2 imo. It's important to note that we probably don't have the same use case. I listen to a lot of genres of music that are often instrumentally heavy but not vocally-heavy and not necessarily always bass-heavy. Xtreme 4 sounds better for vocals because of how much focus it puts on the mids if you don't care about anything else. Boom 2 is just a bass machine. Bose Max for "All-Rounder".

It's overall a great speaker imo. It gets hate here because it's not as bassy as its JBL counterpart. It's also really nice being able to put it safely in a corner and save space. Otherwise it still has advantages over the JBL: it's rustproof (can safely take it to the beach), it can go vertical which saves space, way more features as Karaoke as you mentioned and if you connect it to a Tablet or a TV it actually has ***EXCEPTIONAL BIS*** latency. The JBL's latency is disgusting (220ms+). JBL beats it in terms of bass and, unfortunately, battery life. JBL is ***VERY VERY*** good at battery life. Even at high volumes. Oh the Sony App is also kind of bad if we're going to be honest. JBL Boombox 3 is the best portable IP67 Boombox in the industry. Period. You're not going to find better right now.

jbl boombox 3 is probably one of the best speakers jbls have ever made. Bass reponse is insane, it keeps up all the way to max volume. No other jbl speaker has that and the bass would usually drop off at like 70%. JBL xtreme 3 isnt very good, I wouldnt recommend it and it isnt too different to the charge 5 but weighs more and is more expensive. The boombox 3 is SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than any other jbl speaker in that category before you get to the partybox range

BTW OP, for reference, the bass 'falloff' or compression is identical to your partybox 110. Both the charge 5 and partybox 110 have a DRC of 3dB, which means when playing at max volume the bass on average is 3dB quieter than the rest of the frequencies played from the speaker at max volume. The difference is the max SPL of the charge 5 is 89dB and your PB110 is 98dB. So hearing 95db of bass is a lot, but hearing 86dB relative to 89dB is going to seem noticeable quiet. Expecting good bass performance at high volumes from such a small speaker is asking to defy physics, theres only so much you can get out of a small driver without having to pump more power into it, which will make it more heavy, bigger and cost more. The reason the charge 5 is so highly praised is because of its output for its size, for the same price you can get the Soundcore Boom 2, which is almost 3x the size and 1.5x the weight, yet its performance is practically identical to the charge 5. similar frequency response, same 'problem' where the bass struggles at high volumes at almost the same proportion. But the JBL will sound a lot better and it's 2/3 of the weight so its super portable. If you really care for that then the boombox 3 is honestly the king of flat responses at max volume. The bass can keep up all the way to 100% which is far better than any other speasker on the market afaik. For reference, the max SPL of the boombox 3 is similar to the charge 5 (91dB vs 89dB) , but it weighs like 7x more, is 12x the size and cost 4x more. But the bass response is completely flat at max volume. Thats the sort of power and size required comparable to the charge 5 to get that perfect bass performacne you want. Theres not much any speaker company can do at the size of the charge 5 to get that level of performacne unfortunately. Sorry for this long ramble lol, I just got curious about the numbers because I also have a charge 5 wifi as well as a boombox and other speakers Source: [https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs-jbl-boombox-3/21575/31312](https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs-jbl-boombox-3/21575/31312)

[https://www.rtings.com/speaker/reviews/brane/x](https://www.rtings.com/speaker/reviews/brane/x) The frequency response for this is wild, it's bass boosted, and then starts to drop off on the highs. Brane X -is- a good speaker, but JBL Boombox 3 has it beat in regards to a better curve all around. [https://www.rtings.com/speaker/reviews/jbl/boombox-3](https://www.rtings.com/speaker/reviews/jbl/boombox-3) Also JBL B3 is slightly cheaper rn (400) But almost twice the weight.

If you want deep bass and loud sound, the JBL Boombox 3 is a solid choice. Alternatives include the Sony XV800 with louder, but less portable, Soundboks Go with very loud with strong bass, and Ultimate Ears Hyperboom with great bass and balanced sound). If portability is key, the Sony Ult Field 7 is a good pick too!

Unfortunately not I believe the bb1’s syncing software is either connect or connect + which can’t connect with partyboost (what the bb2 and 3 uses) JBL likes to come out with a different connection system for almost every generation of speaker to force users to upgrade to the newest, now JBL has made auracast (4th version) the way speakers connect together

Totally agree, I prefer the soundcore boom 2 over any speakers that i've Tried and had: Tribit lava (distorsion sometimes), U Boom x (distorsion sometimes and a bit priced too), tronsmart bang (distorsion), zealot (same thing), bose (overpriced),  Sony ult (was ok nothing more and priced),, Ue boom 3 (not m'y cup of tea), JBL Xtrem 1 and 4 (I sold the Xtrem 4 and still have the 1 which IS my favorite from JBL loud but still muffled, a bit heavy, and distorsion sometimes), JBL boom box 3 (distorsion sometimes, loud sounding, heavy, and not m'y thing).  Soundcore boom 2 cook them all. For $130 on usa amazon and 99€ on France amazon haha. I got it for 60€ with a Friend. Pretty sure he regret it now.

Hi, the Uboom x IS great but distortion sometimes and I still prefer my soundcore boom 2. That beast sounds great. 360° sounding speaker, easy to carry, light weight, solid 70 watts speaker as the soundcore boom 2 IS not compatible with thé app anymore. But not a problem for me. As the bass UP button IS awesome.  I've tried the soundcore boom 2 in front of tribit lava (distortion sometimes), U boom x (distortion sometimes), JBL Big boom box 3 (distortion And muffled sometimes), JBL Xtrem from 1 to 4 ( I had the 4 and sold it, I still have the Xtrem 1), tronsmart bang, zealot, bose, Sony speakers and still prefer the soundcore boom 2. And now there IS the New Soundcore boom 2 pro. Wow.

Hi dear person, I understand you,  but that's absolutely not the case for me. Why i don't know ;)  The app is not even useful with this beautiful beast. Because everything is perfectly balanced, and if you activate the bass up button on (you get even more wonderful sound). Sounds better, deeper, louder than most speakers I've had and tried (jbl xtrem 1 and 4, i sold the xtrem 4, bose, sony, etc.). I compared it with my friend's speakers (u boom x, Harman speakers, Eu Boom 3-4-5, Tribit lava, zealot 120 watts speaker, jbl boom 3 party speaker, bose, soundlink, beat, tronsmart bang, mini, etc.) The soundcore boom 2 cooks them all. For $90-120 on amazon. I got it for 60€ with my friend. And he regretted it deeply. He told me. In conclusion, I repeat: 70 truly watts speaker, 360° sound, Easy to carry, light weight, perfectly balanced sound midrange bass trebless high, no distortion even at full volume (be careful with your neighbors). That thing sounds like heaven!!! An engineer friend, that told me, that he has never listened to such 'medium' sized speaker that sounded that good .

I understand your perception and your thoughts. It was a time when there were not even apps for speakers. In the case of the soundcore boom 2. I understand the frustration of ingenious perfectionists not being able to manage EQ. I could not say why soundcore did that. I am not the author, nor an affiliate. In any case, I can tell you one thing with certainty: The sound does not even need adjustment, no need for adjustment. It sounds 2 times better than an xtrem 4 and a jbl boom 3 party jbl, as good as a bose model, better than harman speakers, x times better than the x king/tronsmart/zealot/tribit speakers. Which have a lot of distortion at high volume (even if the music is not made to be listened to at full volume.) In any case, I got it for 60€ and I am more than satisfied. In my garden or park evenings, my friends only say "woww". And I can understand, because this beast is brilliantly adjusted in terms of sound. Many have said they prefer the Soundcore Boom 2 to the U Boom x and others prefer the U Boom x. However, this one has a lot of distortion sometimes. Others have said, the Soundcore Boom 2 is superb for techno music but rubbish for the rest. Absolutely false!!! It is incredible for live performances, albums, jazz/rock/African music/Cuban/Celtic/metal/pop/country/acoustic instrumental/trap rnb etc etc etc. And even superb for watching a movie (I tried). I listen to dir en grey metal group on it sometimes, jazz, Christian music, rock, folk, rnb, techno, old music, classical music sometimes, Cuban, Brazilian (rosa passos guitarists and singer), and all types of unimaginable music. I'm a multi-instrumentalist musician. I like everything in music except vulgarity and propaganda. And I can say once again, that the Soundcore Boom 2 cooks all the speaker models I've heard (even those with modified EQ etc.). And that for $90-130 on Amazon. It's worse than a good deal, it's a robbery. This speaker doesn't need any EQ adjustment. It's great like that. Of course, we all have different tastes and preferences. It's normal ;) Ps: the ones that dislike the soundcore boom 2 are mostly people that are fan boy, trolls, and some honest people that had minor problems such shipping, that fell into a poor series of soundcore boom. Which is rare. Maybe the SE old version. The author of this, says he had buzz sounds... Definetely not a soundcore boom 2, probably a soundcore boom SE. The old one. Soundcore resolved the problem. And it is not buzzing. We are far from it. Or maybe he have a false one... Rare too.

Soundcore boom 2:  - $90-130 on amazon.  - 360° sounding speaker - Easy to carry light weight - 80 watts speaker (well 70 watts cause the app IS not compatible anymore, not a prob for me it IS a solid 70 watts speaker with the bass UP button pressed on.) - No distortion even at full volume Awesome trebles bass medium high, perfectly balanced.   And i seriously mean it is perfectly balanced. It is a beast. If you want to push the volume up, all the neighbor will hear that beast. And if you want to keep the volume low it sounds magnificent like heaven. Great for everytypes of music even the live concert sounds great whatever African music, rnd, trap, cuban, classical, metal, rock, pop, country folk, fusion, jazz ect.  I've tried a comparaison in front of lot and lot of speakers : Sony speakers, Bose speaker, w king, JBL x trem 1 and 4 which i had (still have the 1 and sold the 4), tribit lava, zealot, U boom x, tronsmart bang, JBL boom box 3 ect. They aren't bad but lot of distortion and muffled sometimes for some and overpriced. The JBL Xtrem 1 and 4 sounds poor next to it.  The soundcore boom 2 cook them all. For $90-130 on amazon. And in France 89€ actually. A great great deal and seriously that speaker is phenomenal. Sounds better than most 95% of overpriced Big speakers  Lot of my friends says : 'Woww' when i play the soundcore boom 2 on.  It is a versatile beast. I've had a JBL Boombox for 6 years, gone through every version, 1, 2, and 3. Without a doubt my favorite speaker on the market. My first one I got refurbished and it stopped charging after about 8 months, JBL support replaced it for free and upgraded me to the 2nd gen. That one got stolen out of my car, I emailed JBL to see if they would help me replace it and they replied in 2 hours with the biggest coupon they had available for me to replace it, I got the 3rd gen which is what I currently have for $300 instead of $500. It's louder than I could ever need, I used to max out the volume on the last two frequently, this one seems to hit that loudness at half volume. It has 2, 4 inch subs built in that SLAP, I've tested songs against many of my friends speakers and mine is always louder with more sub. It sounds great, I produce dubstep and check my masters on it. The battery lasts 24 hours, I take it on long camping trips and to festivals all the time and it's always up to the task. And JBL customer support are angels that will go to any length to keep their customers happy. 10/10 speaker that I will replace with the same thing if anything ever happens to this one. I would HIGHLY recommend the JBL Boombox 3 esp for EDM but it's really just a fantastic speaker.

The original JBL Xtreme is hands down the best portable speaker I've ever owned. If you're looking for bass, JBL speakers are the way to go, just don't go below the Xtreme model if you want bass. I've had every model from the Flip to the Boombox. The smaller ones sound great and get decently loud, but they lack the bass that the Xtreme delivers. The Boombox 3 (without Wi-Fi, with an AUX port) has the best bass, but it's not very portable. The Xtreme strikes the perfect balance between sound quality and portability. Xtreme 2 removed the second USB-A charging port but improved the strap and stand design. Xtreme 3 has slightly better sound quality than the X1 and X2. However, its battery was downgraded from 10,000mAh to 6,800mAh. It adds a USB-C port that can serve as a second charger and play audio. The stand is nearly nonexistent, but the strap retains the improved X2 design. Xtreme 4 features a removable 9,444mAh battery and an improved stand but removes the AUX port, meaning you're stuck with SBC codec over Bluetooth. Xtreme 1 models are rare these days, but if you get an Xtreme 2, you can use a USB hub to charge multiple devices. If battery life isn't a concern, the Xtreme 3 is a solid choice, especially if you can find it at a good price. I just picked up a lightly used one for $80.

Play them at the same volume indoors. The xtreme will destroy it. The bass is deeper but not powerful enough to be noticeable outdoors. The charge 5 plays upper bass frequencies which are easily heard in almost any environment even outdoors. Deep bass needs hard surfaces to bounce off or more power to hear it out in the open. It’s really just a logistics issue with size and power and what frequencies it plays because the boombox doesn’t have this issue since it’s more bigger and powerful.

I have the Max and I’m not impressed. The JBL charge 5 I have is less than half the price and has tighter bass with more pronounced mids. The bass on the max is muddy. I’ve tried EQ’ing it but it doesn’t improve. I also have the Boombox 3 which absolutely spanks the max. Also when you join the max with the flex in party mode there is a noticeable delay between each speaker which you don’t get with the JBL.  I’m very disappointed with this offering from Bose.

Thanks for those clarifications. In that case, I've got 3 suggestions for you. First, the JBL Boombox 3. Great all-around speaker, sounds good, well-suited to the outdoors, and easy to carry with one hand. This will give you the least hassle when it comes to transportation, and it's very sturdy for outdoor use, with high dust and water resistance. Others have suggested the UE Hyperboom, and I personally think that's a great-sounding speaker, but it doesn't have a dust-resistance rating, which might be an issue when taking it to the beach. If you need a bit more oomph, both in terms of loudness and bass impact, then consider either the JBL PartyBox 310 or the JBL PartyBox Stage 320. TBH, these perform similarly enough that you can just get whichever is cheaper. But both these weigh a little over 35 lbs, compared to the 15 lbs the JBL Boombox 3 weighs. And they're not quite as well-rated for water resistance, and neither is rated for dust-resistance, which might be important if you're going to the beach.

I concur with these choices (the JBL Authentics 500 or the Harman Go + Play 3). The JBL isn't battery-powered, which limits its portability. If that's key, I'd go with the Harman. But that lacks waterproofing, so if you plan on also taking the speaker outside frequently and need it to withstand water or dust, something like the JBL Boombox 3 would be my pick.

I’ve got 2 PartyBox 120’s, 320’s and now 520’s. They all have loads of bass. Obviously more as you go up in woofer size. So the Ultimate probably has the most right now. I’d probably say the PartyBox 120 is the sweet spot. It outperforms the Boombox 3 considerably but it is still portable and has a replaceable battery.

The JBL Boombox 3 is a great speaker, no question about it. It plays a little stronger and louder, and has a premium feel. It is also bigger and heavier. Disadvantages are that it can't easily be fitted with a shoulder strap and that you can't charge it with USB-C. I don't understand what you wrote about the sound quality dropping significantly and I can't relate to that either. I've already had the opportunity to compare the UBOOM X with a Boombox 3 outside in the park. In terms of sound, they were actually quite similar at higher volumes, only the Boombox has a little more power. When the UBOOM X was close to maximum volume, the Boombox was at around 80% and still had a bit of headroom. At lower volumes, however, I would say that the UBOOM X offers the better sound quality, as the bass on the Boombox is unnaturally boosted. I have two UBOOM Xs that I use both regularly in TWS mode and individually. I would also describe myself as an audiophile listener and have a high-quality stereo system installed in my living room. I mostly use my Bluetooth speakers for outdoor activities or at home in the bathroom. For outdoor use at a small party, I would always prefer two UBOOM Xs to one Boombox, because with two speakers you can simply distribute the sound better over an area and, depending on the listening position, you also benefit from the stereo stage. However, I hope you make a good decision and have a lot of fun with your future Bluetooth speaker.

A little bigger/louder would be the JBL Boombox 3, but the release of its successor is expected soon. The EarFun UBOOM X is a little smaller/less loud, but far cheaper than the Boombox. I have two of them and am very satisfied. Sometimes I use one, sometimes I use both in stereo, which is another significant improvement in the sound experience. Despite the price of only around 100$, the UBOOM X is a impressive improvement over the JBL Xtreme as you can hear and see in the Youtube video “JBL Charge 6, Xtreme 4 & Earfun UBoom X - taking sound to the top”.

The big plus with the Boombox 3 over all but the Ultimate for Partyboxes is that it is a 3 way speaker with midrange drivers. It’s literally one of the only portable Bluetooth speakers that is 3 way.

Yeah, the 3 equalizer options def. I just notice a slight difference in audio quality when it and my partyboxes. With my partyboxes though location placement and size of area affects sounds quality more, especially with the lower frequencies.

Man that Bose Max is very disappointing. I was expecting deep bass but it's a joke ! I took it back and bought a JBL Boombox 3 for the same price, and man I'm freaking amazed at the bass the bb3 puts out ! It's a freaking beast and the sound quality is amazing ! It shakes Walls and Floors ! 😎

A lot larger than you want to. Nothing which you can just toss into your sports bag is going to do the trick (even the JBL xtreme which you think is massive). It’s jbl boombox or Sony ULT field 7 at a bare minimum.

I use the JBL boombox to record/play sets in public spaces. Sounds great, if you don't mind latency (I mix mostly in headphones to counter). To soften the blow of latency, try an alternative with an "instrument in" channel.

I’ve only used it for a couple hours at a time. It’s a first gen and I think they are up to gen 3 now. I don’t charge it until it’s dead. Think I use it 3 or 4 times before I recharge it. So somewhere between 6-8 hrs total play but never at full volume. That would probably eat up battery quicker

Yes it’s very good. Best thing is it’s cheaper than Bose and Marshall and yet the bass is much cleaner and it’s way more durable than both these brands

First of all the negativity and ignorance here on Reddit is simply shocking. Especially in this Bluetooth speaker sub it would seem as if some bored kiddies were trying to spend their spare time here instead of going out playing football, pretending being smartasses having the need of spreading their vomit around... It is sad to see what happens here in regard to brand fanboyism and nitwit-ism with no background knowledge at all. I couldn't care less about all this as I don't give a shit about it, but as Reddit has a huge reach it can lead to some huge misinformation or let's call it "fake news" due to these ignorant hobbists who simply have nothing better to do than trolling around apparently. Please let me explain how the Uboom X developed and what my part was, to clear up all the confusion and misinformation. About a year ago I was approached by Earfun asking if I would like to create some tuning for this upcoming speaker. After the experience I did with the Uboom L some years ago and everyone attacking me calling me to be fake and some shill I was really hesitant to do anything like this again. In reality meanwhile the Uboom L became a kind of classic among music enthusiasts, but I was dragged through the mud back than. Let me say that my youtube channel was built up on sound samples which took me years to optimise in order to reach the most realistic and unbiased sound quality. From my sound demos it was immediately hearable which speaker performed better or worse, even when listening through some crappy headphones, the differences were always perceptible well, if listened over a referened headphone you were basically listening to the real thing, or let's say 95% of what it sounds in real life. I could have missed out my comments and verdicts from all my videos as people should have heard on their own, but these trolls were still pretending the obviously distorting, boomy, muddy speaker was better... So I tried teaching them how sound should sound like, as obviously they didn't know. Many of my viewers were thankful for that, they contacted me and are still contacting me how much I changed their view on bullshit marketing, overpriced audio junk etc etc. Back to the UBoom X: I thought it could be an interesting experience to tune a larger speaker out of my personal interest in this topic and I was not sure what the outcome could be as it would have been the first and maybe last kind of product like that I had the chance to work on. Prior to Earfun only Tribit ever approached me to help them with their products (this was when Earfun engineers were still part of Tribit), So aside of the UBoom L before I also did the tuning for the 360° UBoom as well as the first Tribit Stormbox, or Tribit Xsound Go, I also tuned the Earfun Wave headphone and the old Tribit Xfree Tune and some inears... But tuning a "boombox" with all the competition on the market could be challenging and although the contract between me and Earfun really sucked, offering me just some one-time tuning fee and some commission only when purchased over my own links, I neverthless decided to take this challange which turned out to become quite an odyseey for several months with the most negativity I could even think off. I quickly noticed that the hardware was quite capable, the 80W of rated power just didn't mean anything, and I simply tried to push the speaker to the limits with my settings. I really wanted to offer something unique and outstanding, something people always seeking for good sound quality would appreciate, how wrong was I... Initially I planned to include 3 different settings: indoor, outdoor and "insane". Unlike mentioned everywhere these "EQs" are complete DSP programs, consisting of several sections no only EQ, but the entire compressor/limiter, dynamic EQ, psychoacoustic effects for stereo enhancing and bass, volume curve etc etc. Each of my settings has different 3-band compressor settings, with different crossover frequencies, different volume curves EQ etc. And it took endless listening sessions outdoor at maximum volume to squeeze out the maximum out of this speaker. The outdoor modes have a completely different approach to compression than the indoor modes, which are rather conservative and should retain most bass up to maximum with overall volume not being pushed that much. I also tried to get the most kick out of the outdoor modes up to maximum volume and you should notice that the UBoom X has more attack with more basskick than most other similar speakers, neither does it become as harsh at high levels like others (e.g. Stormbox Blast, which becomes just treble at maximum). This took lots of effort to optimise and the current outdoor mode has treble pushed more than the other modes at high volumes to simply allow for even higher output and loudness to be heard from farther away or higher listening angles. My first indoor was similar to the current indoor+, outdoor was something between the current outdoor and outdoor+ and insane was similar to the current outdoor+ but with bass pushed even more which made it more comparable to some way larger JBL Boomboxes. It looked quite funny seeing this rather compact speaker competing with much larger heavier speakers during my tests. Unfortunately the DSP was quite limiting and while I could optimise every single volume step for the UBoom L with different compression values, there was no way to achieve the same for the UBoom X. I would usually dynamically adjust either the highpass for high levels to avoid too much distortion, or optimise the compressor for higher levels compared to low levels. All this was not possible here and I always came into distortion with too high bass levels and volumes. I also noticed that just 3 modes were not enough to cover most use cases, as the speaker was still pretty bassy with "indoor" and "insane" became too uncontrolled at higher levels due to the limitations mentioned above. So instead of trying to do another "boombox" I thought it could be nice to have a speaker for serious listening which could do both, be some kind of portable studio monitor and some boombox for outdoors if needed. In the end I created several different tunings like that: \- indoor should offer a pretty neutral response similar to studio monitors with some psychoacoustic stereo enhancing and dynamic bass and treble adjustments for lower levels (I kept this rather subtle not to make the speaker appear boomy by no means, I would have liked to boost treble even more for the lowest levels, but the DSP didn't allow it. I would have needed to tune the speaker brighter to begin with and then tone down treble with the compressor at high levels which doesn't work as precisely. \- indoor+ adds even more stereo width and has some slight boost at the lowest and highest frequencies. I tried to achieve something that JBL or Harman is usually doing, boosting bass before rolling off, at the same time I wanted to avoid that one-note kind of bass from JBL, and the boominess of the go+play. This mode should sound quite similar to a go+play but with a more even frequency response and a higher volume with less bass reduction at the same time (not even talking about the much better battery life) \- outdoor has upper bass slightly reduced to avoid the speaker to appear too boomy when placed at the ground while midbass around 60hz boosted more, at the same time lowest bass is cut quite a bit more as usually outdoors these frequencies are not heard that well anyhow, this together with the less aggressive compressor for treble allowed for the highest SPL levels with less distortion than outdoor+, Boom xXX etc. Stereo enhancing is disabled for the outdoor mode, as this created some weird effects in the response when listened off axis, so outdoor should sound better from high angles than the other modes. \- outdoor+ is similar to indoor+ just with the most stereo enhancing the most bass boost in the lowest region and some stronger overall treble boost compared to indoor+ Unfortunately outdoor+ can still become a bit uncontrolled with bassheavy recordings if pushed to the max. You can always try to reduce volume 1-2 steps and it should be still loud enough (much louder than the Stormbox Blast) while becoming cleaner and bassier at the same time. \- Boom xXX was meant as rather fun for those who simply love that boominess. It is still listenable unlike some Sony speakers that are just knocking and humming with mudiness and IMO Boom xXX works best for maximum volume with the most overall bass and slightly less distortion than outdoor+ while being louder at the same time. \- Ground O which stands for ground omnidirectional should offer you the most bass possible when placed at the ground due to the boundary effect without the boominess you would get with Boom xXX, at the same time treble is boosted a lot to allow for omnidirectional listening when the speaker is aimed upwards. This works fairly well and due to the reduced upper bass it gives a more controlled result than Boom xXX with a cleaner, deeper bass due to the ground reflections. \- studio was included due to my Patrons asking for a completely neutral mode with no stereo enhancing, no dynamic EQ etc. This came quite late, and as all my other settings were based on some stereo enhancing which also had a strong impact on the overall frequency response, I had a hard time to tweak this mode to really offer the results I was longing for. I personally prefer indoor for a more neutral reproduction as this opens up the sound stage and gives you more satisfying results for low levels. I also had ideas for other settings although seeing now people complaining already now about too many EQs. I wouldn't care less for the included EQs from Earfun which are really plenty, but Earfun didn't want to give me further slots for additional modes, one of them being "desktop". The problem with portable speakers is that they will change the sound a lot depending on where they are placed and most people do not care how or where to place them. Usually you should place a speaker at the edge of some boundary to avoid any effects with the surface underneath. So a speaker which sounds correct standing free will color the sound a lot when placed in the center of some table, ground etc. To overcome this I still created an own desktop mode which should give more satisfying results with the speaker placed on some larger table or even at the ground. It should still offer a rather neutral uncolored result compensating for the reflections of this surface. Earfun created an own custom firmware for me including this setting replacing studio, which I personally hardly used at all. Those interested can always grab that on my Patreon: [https://www.patreon.com/oluvsone/shop/earfun-uboom-x-custom-firmware-with-mode-560004?utm\_medium=clipboard\_copy&utm\_source=copyLink&utm\_campaign=productshare\_fan&utm\_content=join\_link](https://www.patreon.com/oluvsone/shop/earfun-uboom-x-custom-firmware-with-mode-560004?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=productshare_fan&utm_content=join_link) I have put the Uboom X against much more sophisticated, more expensive speakers and it was on par or outperforming those easily, then reading comments from some deaf idiots claiming it to sound worse, having less detail than their Motion+ or worse bass than their Motion Boom is just completely crazy. People are attacking me repeatedly being a shill for Earfun. Honestly I get a shit from them. From November until now I "earned" 300$ of commission... Others like Flossy who contributed nothing to this probably earned 100 times as much in the same time with his own affilate links and nobody has a problem with this. With all the work I put into this, hoping to satisfy also more demanding listeners, offering something no other company even thought about in a speaker that costs a fraction of the competition and then getting all the shitstorm by some weirdos here, just made me lose all motivation to contribute anything anymore. If you want to support me in some way, you can always use my discount code UBOOMXXX which works on the Earfun site directly . Only then I get some percentage of the sales. So seeing all this negativity, all these claims about Earfun bots flooding Reddit, me being some shill for Earfun is just nonsense bullshit. Earfun doesn't even want to pay me for my work, let alone some others. And yes, I am to some degree satisfied with the result I achieved, so why shouldn't I promote it in some way to those who are new to this topic, unlike others who promote speakers that someone serious about music wouldn't even consider when being deaf!
