I ended up getting the Charge, and I am very happy with it! The clarity from it playing thru Wi-Fi is phenomenal! In fact it sounds so good, I might get another for stereo pair! The Charge 5 SE outperforms my JBL Xtreme 4 at least indoors under 50% volume! I had it paired with my JBL Partybox Club 120 thru Auracast watching Apple TV, F1: The Movie, and it shines!

Most of my speakers, and I have plenty of them, the sweetspot sits somewhere around 70 - 75% volume. With the Charge 5 at 75%, it sounded like a kitchen radio. Luckily I got it during Black Friday for "only" $103 USD. IMO still too expensive for what it is. Forget about the retail price at $179, you must be insane or don't care about money to drop that kind of dough on this speaker.

If it does sound indeed better, than the regular Charge 5, $140 is fair. But yeah, I will never recommend the Charge 5 to anyone, after my experience. Matter of fact, I will sh\*t on it continuously if I see it recommended here.

Just be aware, the Charge 5 rolls off bass after 50%. Anything above this, and the bass will not increase. At least that was my experience.

Well most, if not all of my speakers have a sweet spot around 75%. With the Charge 5 at 75% volume, all I heard was mids and highs and a tiny amount of bass. For a retail price of $180 dollars, the Charge 5 is useless for me outdoors.

105db? Thats complete bullshit, i got a jbl charge 6 louder and that clocks at 101,3db(A) and for the 250$ price tag it has worse specs/performance then a charge 6/5. It has worse SPL, worse clarity, worse battery, and worse bass response although durability is mostly equal as far as i have abused both (ranger and charge 6).

Would perhaps you care to specify the exact specs of the speakers and the amp? I got the Flip 6 recently which is pretty much identical to the Flip 7 sound wise and I was vastly disappointed with its' outdoors capacity. It is a small room/apartment speaker at most. The Charge 5/6 delivers great performance/portability ratio. The Xtreme 3 was a huge letdown outdoors as well, you just expect more from a speaker of that size. I never owned a Boombox but from what I read it is a huge upgrade on the Xtreme. So if size/portability is secondary to you - don't cheap out and get the Boombox. If portability is important go with the Charge 6.

I had 2 JBL Charge 5's and tbh i never really liked them that much. For sure the sound quality was on point, but the fact that they were mono speakers was always a bit of a deal breaker for me, because it is very noticeable, not because of the stereo separation (like hearing something on the left and something on the right) but because of the overall soundstage. It also had other problems like not being able to equalize the speakers when they are paired in stereo, that was a problem for me because i'm a basshead and i don't like how bright is the stock signature EQ of the Charge 5's, also, the fact that they didn't even have a small strap made it so that i ended up using more my other speakers instead of the charge 5's even if the charge 5's sounded better, because having to carry it with your entire hand and grabbing the entire body of the speaker wasn't particularly of my liking for carrying it around with music outside, and putting them inside a bag was always a problem because of how "fragile" and easy to tear off the feet of the speakers are, and the logo on the front is extremely easy to scratch, just look at any used JBL speaker, the logo is almost always the thing that reveals that they're used speakers. Right now all of my speakers are stereo and i am very happy with that. Now i have a Bose soundlink Max and even though it is bigger and heavier i ended up using it more than the JBL Charge 5 because it solves all of those problems while also sounding better and louder.

Well, i had a JBL Charge 5 and a JBL Xtreme 3 and the difference in terms of bass was definetly noticeable, on the Xtreme 3 you could feel the bass and it was definetly deeper, though the Max volume difference wasn't THAT Big and actually, for overall sound quality (not focused on bass) i looked more the Charge 5. I see you are mainly looking for bass and some reviewers say that the Xtreme 3 has deeper bass than the Xtreme 4, but the Xtreme 4 has more definition and clarity in the mids and highs.

I recieved my new Ult Field 1 yesterday and i've been doing some tests comparing it to both of my JBL Charge 5's, TL and TT versions. Today i wanted to test the bass so i put my usual bass test video wich goes from 100hz to 20hz with 5hz steps and i discovered that when the Charge 5 goes below 60hz, the volume decreases significantly when in the other hand, my Sony Ult Field 1 kept almost the same good volume on the bass up to 50hz. Below that, on 45hz the bass on the Charge 5 completely dissapears when the Sony still kept reproducing the frequency at a reasonably audible volume. Any thoughts about this? Has anyone tested it? This shocked me because many reviewers and people in general tend to say that the JBL FLIP 6 has a deeper bass than the Sony and even though i don't have the Flip 6, taking in count what the Sony managed to do here, it just cannot be true that the Flip 6 has a better bass response. The Sony basically reached the JBL Xtreme 3 frequency response being a quarter of it's size. On rtings.com page, the Sony ult field 1 reached a low-frequency response of 55.8hz, the Flip 6 reached 75.5hz, the Charge 5 reached 58.2hz, and the Xtreme 3 reached down to 55hz. I saw those charts before recieveng my Ult Field 1 and i thought that they did something wrong in the tests but it just proved me wrong. NOTE: both of my Charge 5's we're equalized with the bass turned all the way up and tested on the same phone and same place so there's no excuses here.

JBL basically aims for everything but it is widely known for it's bass and volume for the size. Even though in this test the Sony won, i still think that JBL is the king of the bass on portable speakers nowadays because this is only one speaker and JBL wins in any other size or model. Sony older portable speakers are just bad and can't compete with current JBL models, this was an exception. Though i think that the possibly upcoming Sony Ult Field 3 and 5 have the potencial to be the best portable speakers.

I literally made my entire post saying that i TESTED it and compared it myself, i heard it myself. It does go deeper. And i know about sony's 20hz claim on their page, i'm not basing my facts on that at all; the page that i mentioned is RTINGS.COM wich is a page that does detailed speaker reviews, they have a whole speaker testing method and even tell you the level of distortion of them.

I actually think that this happens because JBL optimized their Charge 5 to go only up to 60hz because is already a good frequency range and maybe that leaves enough room to give the speaker more volume without distorting the bass or something like that.

I can agree that the Charge 5 is a better overall speaker but there's a size difference wich plays a huge role. I was just commenting that it's still an amazing achievement for a speaker that size to reach 45hz. Thanks for your opinion!

You use speakers only for white noise? That's a lot of money just for sleeping. Well, both have great battery in my use tbh there isn't much difference, i've used both for an entire day playing loud music in my school and house and neither of them died on me, that's from 8:15 am to 12 am.

No problem, and yeah though it is technically true that if you use it at 50% volume it could last you 12 hours, a speaker that sounds so good just makes you want to crank up that volume! If you want any opinions/recommendations though, right now my favourite and the one that i'm gonna stay with is the Earfun Uboom L (i've had Soundcore motion 300, JBL flip 6, Sony ULT Field 1, Soundcore Motion+, JBL Charge 5, etc). You might be surprised, but that single 10 band equalizer is what makes it so good, because you can have the clarity and brightness of the Flip 6 while having the strong deep bass of the Ult Field 1. Just to compare, it goes deeper and way louder than the ULT Field 1, and i think that on indoor Mode it has a deeper bass than the Charge 5, while in outdoor mode it gives an amazing party soundstage, and i also think that it goes the same loudness of the Charge 5, at least with high volume equalizers. The battery life is a bit better than the Sony too!

Man, i literally mentioned that the Ult Field 1 mantains a good volume on bass down to 45hz while the Charge 5 died at that same frequency, you didn't even read my post at all, or do i have to explain that 45hz is a deeper frequency response than 60hz? It seems like you don't know what is deep bass. You are extremely biased.

no, i was not happy with mine at all it sounds terrible because it's a mono speaker and the tweeter just sounds harsh and also way too much bass, so much to the point that it's unusable in a small room or a shower because it just muffles all the other sound and the shockingly poor build quality, the rubber on the bottom started peeling off within the first week of owning it there's no place in this world for a $150 mono speaker, stereo has been the standard for years, it's an obvious cashgrab from JBL and Samsung to get you to buy a 2nd one for stereo sound or upgrade to one that has stereo if you really need a JBL speaker with a power bank then just get a charge 3 or charge essential 1st gen instead of this hunk of JUNK!

I really enjoy the Charge 5. It's the first "big" portable speaker I bought for myself, and I started off with one Charge 5 initially and thought it sounded great; clear sound and clean bass for its size. Then I bought another since I wanted to pair them for stereo sound, and was even more impressed with sound quality (even though the EQ is set to flat when in stereo mode and you can't adjust it). I wanted more portability and later bought a Flip 6. The sound is pretty good on the Flip 6 but I prefer the Charge 5 over the Flip 6 for sound. I have since bought a JBL Authentics 200 (not a portable speaker) which is now my go-to when listening to music at home, and only been using the Charge 5 in the shower. I used to bring the Charge 5 with me when going to places but that's been replaced with the Flip 6 since it's a more travel friendly size to me. Like someone else said, I agree the Charge 5 gives you the best bang for the buck for this size speaker, and the battery life is amazing.

As described before: We feel you on the bass reduction with high volume, it is too noticable, it irks me too, but given the dimensions, you are NOT getting more anyways. Every single decibel increase, especially in bass region, will get exponentially more expensive. The Charge 5 is/was very fairly priced product for what it is, and very good for its size. Sorry to hear you are unsatisfied.

There is a difference. Aside from power bank, Charge 5 has a slightly higher waterproof rating. It is louder with better audio quality than the Flip 6. They do share a similar speaker configuration with a mid-range driver and dedicated tweeter plus the dual passive radiators, but the Charge 5’s speakers are slightly larger. In other words these speakers can be very similar, but in my experience my Charge has been much better at delivering clear and audible sound in my backyard than my Flip 6

I bought a Wking X20 for about $250 half of JBL Boombox 3 and sounds just as good to any except perhaps a true audiophile - which my sound engineer buddy is and he said it sounds great! So now I’m looking at replacing my 2 JBL Charge 5’s with two Wking X10’s. Saw a Youtube sound comparison and IMHO x10 blows the Charge 5 away. There is no way in hell I am paying JBL premium price for the Charge 6 my 5’s are not even a year old - gifting them to my son

Oh bose is no competition to the charge 5, crossover on the soundlink series is horrible and it made the speaker sound muddy. Your gonna get better speakers cheaper than the bose, their just really greedy with their shit. It just looks more premium, thats all.

For what you're looking for I think [JBL Charge 5](https://www.reddit.com/r/DecideWise/comments/1ocd5db/my_review_of_jbl_charge_5_after_using_it_for_a/) is the best choice. It's an amazing value speaker and I don't think it's necessary to go for something even more expensive than that.

Hi, I understand you look for a large (powerful) speaker but still on a very limited budget - right? If yes, you will not find well-known brands. I can tell you that the W-KING D8 is selling these days a lot, also the YIER Bluetooth Speaker which is bigger. If you want more well-known brands in that price range, you will have to compromise on power (they are smaller) and stretch your budget to the $130-150 range - for example the JBL Chrage 5, or Soundcore Boom 2. Have you checked the link I shared above? Worth checking, use the filter inside to understand better your options. I hope this helps.

Hi I own a flip 6, 2x charge 5, xtreme 3 and a boom box 2 If you are looking for portability i would go for the flip 6/7. The f6 weighs about 500 grams and sounds good for the size. It's loud enough for outside, but I wouldn't use it for loud music with more people If you just looking for loud music outside and the weight isn't much important i would recommend Going for 2 charge 5's (maybe price dropped because of the release from charge 6)I can guarantee this is peak quality in music and both speakers together weighs about 2kg) xtreme 4 in comparison beats this setup, but Not as much As the boombox 3 would. The boombox 3 is a beast for outside but it weighs also 6700g which is a huge increase of weight. Basswhise the boom box 3 is spectacular. It Can also perform really good till Volume 70-80.

Best waterproof with aesthetics and great sound included are generally jbl's. A charge 5 you can maybe find for 100$ sometimes, going bigger would be the xtremes, and while those are not that much more powerful than the charge 5, the bass hits deeper and have a wider soundstage as well as carry strap if you're into that But yeah, for 200$, you can maybe find an xtreme 3, but while the xtreme 3 looks better than the 4(in my oppinion) it's worth it to go for the xtreme 4 for something over 200$ as it has removeable battery Charge 5 is waterproof, relatively cheap with the quality it provides and rugged af so it should satisfy you

i got it back in 17.07.22 for about 133 euros. it does the job, bass sounds nice up until 60% volume or so. then it does kind of fade away, just like you said. it was my first “better” speaker that i’ve had. now i do have things that sound better, more full, lot more bass. at first i was impressed by how much bass the charge 5 could output, but now i’m like meh. don’t get me wrong, it sounds fabulous, but sometimes it lacks the punch. for the price, i feel like it’s still the best option, especially for the size

Hello, no brand loyalty here, Ive tried all of them. The JBL is easier to toss around since it fits almost anywhere and the flip 6’s bass is significantly improved! More punchy around low to mids. Charge 5 is the best bang. It punches about the same as the bose soundlink flex (gen 2). BUT its hugeee. Got annoying lugging it around and finding more surface area to put it. I went with the bose flex 2 in the end. More portable and warmer mids to entry highs. Portability was what i was after. The motion 300 didnt cut it for me, it sitting in my closet, it’s my beater whenever i need it. In canada the motion 300 was on sale lowest for $75.99 The Flip 6 is $119.99. The Bose Flex gen 2 is $169.99. The Charge 5 is also $169.99. There is more features with JBL yessss. IMO I’m lazy and out of the box experiences breezier and whoever wants to connect with my speakers wont have to fiddle around on the app to tune it… by the time its tweaked - the party is over.

Of the 3 options in order JBL, Tribit, And then the Soundcore. I will say if you are just using it for audio books or podcasts then the motion 300 is best. The only issue with the motion 300 is the lack of bass.

Out of curiosity I looked on rtings and theres practically no difference. Charge 5 has a SPL of 89, Xtreme 3 is 91. Low end extention is practically the same, 58hz vs 55hz. Both have pretty awful dynamic range compression at max volume (xtreme 3 is worse) so its no wonder they sound the same at max volume, neither have any bass, and the charge 5 have better sounding drivers since its newer. Its not a surprise you think the charge 5 sounds better. Others are right when they say the soundstage is far better on the xtreme, its stereo whereas the charge 5 is mono. [https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs-jbl-xtreme-3/21575/18599](https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs-jbl-xtreme-3/21575/18599)

r/JBL • Xtreme3 is not that great?! ->

BTW OP, for reference, the bass 'falloff' or compression is identical to your partybox 110. Both the charge 5 and partybox 110 have a DRC of 3dB, which means when playing at max volume the bass on average is 3dB quieter than the rest of the frequencies played from the speaker at max volume. The difference is the max SPL of the charge 5 is 89dB and your PB110 is 98dB. So hearing 95db of bass is a lot, but hearing 86dB relative to 89dB is going to seem noticeable quiet. Expecting good bass performance at high volumes from such a small speaker is asking to defy physics, theres only so much you can get out of a small driver without having to pump more power into it, which will make it more heavy, bigger and cost more. The reason the charge 5 is so highly praised is because of its output for its size, for the same price you can get the Soundcore Boom 2, which is almost 3x the size and 1.5x the weight, yet its performance is practically identical to the charge 5. similar frequency response, same 'problem' where the bass struggles at high volumes at almost the same proportion. But the JBL will sound a lot better and it's 2/3 of the weight so its super portable. If you really care for that then the boombox 3 is honestly the king of flat responses at max volume. The bass can keep up all the way to 100% which is far better than any other speasker on the market afaik. For reference, the max SPL of the boombox 3 is similar to the charge 5 (91dB vs 89dB) , but it weighs like 7x more, is 12x the size and cost 4x more. But the bass response is completely flat at max volume. Thats the sort of power and size required comparable to the charge 5 to get that perfect bass performacne you want. Theres not much any speaker company can do at the size of the charge 5 to get that level of performacne unfortunately. Sorry for this long ramble lol, I just got curious about the numbers because I also have a charge 5 wifi as well as a boombox and other speakers Source: [https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs-jbl-boombox-3/21575/31312](https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-charge-5-vs-jbl-boombox-3/21575/31312)

I know this post is from a while ago, but I wanted to chime in just in case you're still looking for recommendations. The **Tribit Stormblast** you were leaning toward is definitely a solid choice for bass-heavy genres like dubstep, trap, and drum and bass. It’s got great bass for the price and is waterproof, which makes it perfect for beach trips or tubing. However, if you're still in the market for a new waterproof Bluetooth speaker, these options might catch your interest: 1. **JBL Charge 5** – If you liked the Charge 4, the Charge 5 is even better. It has improved bass and sound quality, plus it's still waterproof (IP67), so it's great for outdoor adventures. 2. **Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3** – It’s been getting a lot of praise for its 360-degree sound and strong bass, making it a great choice for bass-heavy music. Plus, it’s still fully waterproof (IP67) and rugged. 3. **Anker Soundcore Motion+** – This one’s still a strong budget option with impressive bass and waterproofing (IPX7). It gives you great sound for its price range. If you haven't already made a decision, I actually wrote a blog post on the best waterproof Bluetooth speakers that includes various options for different needs, including the bass-heavy sound you're looking for. Feel free to check it out for more info! \[[https://voyedy.com/best-waterproof-bluetooth-speakers/](https://voyedy.com/best-waterproof-bluetooth-speakers/)\] Hope this helps, and happy listening!

I hated the JBL Charge 5 when I first got it as my first speaker but then I grew accustomed to it over time and it became much more enjoyable to listen to. Find a good spot to place the JBL Charge 5 and the bass becomes boomier. Bass sounds great in my small bedroom especially with my PB Encore. Obviously the bass on the Charge 5 will not fill a larger room. The Charge 5 goes on sale in the US for $89 or $119.

imo because you got the Partybox and they have significant difference in size so ofc the sound doesn't come to your expectation. C5 produces GREAT bass and power considering its size and the compact. Sure the sound quality is not as good compared to its retail price (except for the bass) but other elements makes up for it and its really a solid speaker imo. U also need sometimes to adjust your hearing to feel the sound of a new speaker when ur already used to the sound of ur old one. And dont turn your volume up over 80% because it kills any speaker over time, they aren't actually designed to be played at max all the time tbh

all three are pretty good imo specially the charge 5 cuz its waterproof besides all the basic stuff. Apart from that i feel they fall in the same category in terms of features, personally ima sucker for fuller bass n a wider soundstage so i like the treblab kinds more. theyre around the same price range but give a more concert like feel if that makes sense. Not saying jbl or soundcore are bad, its just that jbl is a bit thin on bass sometimes and can get harsh at high volume, and some soundcore models compress the mids a bit, making vocals less clear. So treblab([this model](https://hochzeits-shopping.com/recommends/treblab-ultra-loud-wireless-speaker/) only tho) just feels a bit more balanced overall.

I just got the Xtreme 3 for Chrismas and the first couple of days I wasn't a big fan. I wondered if my Charge 4 (which i have used for 3 or 4 years now) is better. But those doubts passed once I got used to the bass. I used it at 2 partys and everyone tought it's so much better + it's a lot louderthe only thing that bothers me now is a kind of white noise while the music is playing. I mean the noise is really quiet but when I'm alone in my room and the volume is down I can hear it and I'm not a big fan. Otherwise I find it great for partys or when you're outside, so if you like listening music with your friends it's a good choice, BUT if you're gonna listen only at home when you're by yourself I consider the Charges 4 and 5 a better option moneywise

Depends on what you mean portable is, if its puting it in a backpack, then the max size is the charge 6, but you can probably find a charge 5 for way cheper, and it's almost just as good. If you mean portable as in cary it or just move it from place to place you can find xtreme 4 or 3 and they are better but you can't just put it in a back pack it will take up alot of space, also depends where you are you can find an xtreme 4 for the price od a charge 5 like at target they have some models in Clarence and they are a steal legit.

Ordered these speakers: Bose Soundlink Flex, JBL Charge 5, Tribit Stormbox 2, Soundcore Motion+, Earfun Uboom L (Before I start this review, I have no clue about audio terms and how to describe different sounds etc. I’m a complete layman). I tested the first two first, the JBL is a lot more louder with better bass however the mono audio is really obvious. Bose just sounds a lot better, more clarity and the bass is more across the board. Also, the bose sounds more ‘open’ if that makes sense. You can hear individual notes more obviously compared to JBL. So now the JBL is put to the side, I tested each other speaker alongside the Bose. I would say the closest competitor to the Bose was the Earfun Uboom L. It had the best clarity, best bass and almost as loud as the JBL. It was good to the point that I was considering choosing that, as it was a lot more cheaper. But as I was testing multiple songs between Bose and the others, the Bose was always more suitable to different genres. Especially old school rap and certain EDM tracks where it would show how good it is. The Bose just felt ‘open’ I don’t know if that makes any sort of sense but it’s the best way for me to describe it. If you’re on a budget, definitely get the Earfun Uboom L. If not, I’d recommend the Soundlink flex.

Play them at the same volume indoors. The xtreme will destroy it. The bass is deeper but not powerful enough to be noticeable outdoors. The charge 5 plays upper bass frequencies which are easily heard in almost any environment even outdoors. Deep bass needs hard surfaces to bounce off or more power to hear it out in the open. It’s really just a logistics issue with size and power and what frequencies it plays because the boombox doesn’t have this issue since it’s more bigger and powerful.

r/JBL • Xtreme3 is not that great?! ->

Charge 5 plays 60hz-20khz. 60hz is the upper limit of the sub bass frequency. Do you know how sound works?

r/JBL • Xtreme3 is not that great?! ->
Reddit Icon
SomeGuy2088 • 10 months ago

For technicality yes that’s what I meant. The higher up the frequency response the easier it is to hear it out door or at low volume. I was using upper as higher frequency. The lower the frequency the more power is needed to hear the sounds with human ears.

I agree. Well the xtreme 3 is kinda useless in that comparison, considering that even the charge 5 is larger than the flex 2 gen. Bose definitely killed it with the 2nd gen. Those who say otheriwise live under a rock. Iv'e been using the charge 5 since it came out, and now the flex gen 2 is my go 2 speaker most of the time for this size, including the harman kardon luna and some more competitors. I use quite a different eq for the bose, i feel like it lacks mids when keeping the eq flat, so i boost mids and a little bit highs. The flex gen 2 is the least noticeable to be mono out of all the mono speakers i have, it spreads the sound so impressively considering the small round driver that is placed on one side of the speaker. The clarity is top notch, absolutely zero static noise or bluetooth interruption sounds, feels like i'm using it with aux which it doesn't have. And the build, structure, shape, size, are all perfect for making it a nice little convenient package.

r/Bluetooth_Speakers • Best BT Speaker Under $150 or Less? ->

What i found the most about the update, is how the eq impacts the sound now. Jbl has implemented a very similar update on the boombox 3, where the mid band actually impacts the mids and not upper mids like it used to. And yea the bass rolls off, but it's a common thing. It does happen way worse on the xtreme 4. And the charge 5 is plenty loud at least for my needs when i use it, i barely get to the point where i experience that bass reduction.

r/Bluetooth_Speakers • Best BT Speaker Under $150 or Less? ->

Speaker_Critic777 • 9 months ago

Well i've had it ever since it came out. And i kept it safe all the time, and even now the base stripes on the bottom have started coming apart. I also have a pretty wide collection from a go 4 to an ultimate. I'm not proud of spending money on so many speakers, but that's my illness. I always switch in between different speakers when i listen to music, beacause i like different sound perspectives. When the charge 5 was still new in the market, it was one of the best if not the best. Now it's definitely argueable, because the competition is giving jbl a tough time. And i admit, at this point the charge 5 is one of my least used speakers. I mean, it also depends on how you use it. I personally never go up to 75% volume. If i listen indoors i will use my system with the sub, and outdoors i'd take a larger speaker.

I have the Max and I’m not impressed. The JBL charge 5 I have is less than half the price and has tighter bass with more pronounced mids. The bass on the max is muddy. I’ve tried EQ’ing it but it doesn’t improve. I also have the Boombox 3 which absolutely spanks the max. Also when you join the max with the flex in party mode there is a noticeable delay between each speaker which you don’t get with the JBL.  I’m very disappointed with this offering from Bose.

I have a pair of Felx 2s, just sent back my Charge 5, and thought my Soundcore Boom was just "okay." The Charge 5 may have gotten a bit louder (outside)), but the sound from my Flex 2 was good enough that I bought a second one to pair it with. Together, they're loud, detailed, clear, and have plenty of low-end. I'm currently using them on a sailboat (Ericson 30+), and they sound great in the cabin down below as well as up in the cockpit when I'm sailing offshore (Pacific) or in San Francisco Bay. There are likely other contenders you should consider... But what's your budget?

r/Bluetooth_Speakers • Bose soundlink flex 2 vs jbl charge 5 vs soundcore boom ->
Reddit Icon
SVLibertine • 6 months ago

OK, we have your budget. That's a good start. What's your use case? Where do you listen? What types of music? How portable do you want the speaker? How big is TOO big? I own several Tribit speakers (a pair of Stormbox Micro 2s and a new Lava), as well as Bose (a Smart Speaker and a pair of Flex 2s). I've owned JBLs in the past (Charge 5, Charge 5 WiFi, Flips 2-4) and have nothing against them, but my use case precluded keeping any of the JBLs. I have the paired Micro 2s attached to my sailboat's lifelines in the cockpit for good stereo sound, and down below in the cabins I switch out my pair of Bose Flex 2s with Sony XG300s depending on my mood. If I need loud, it's the Sony's. If I need detail and am playing "quieter" tunes, it's the Flex 2s. On the dock when I'm gardening, washing boats, or entertaining, I pull out the Tribit Lava...or sometimes grab my pair of Sonos Move 2s if I have a group of more than 20 people on the back deck or foredeck (Sea Ranger 52 Trawler) so we can cover both areas.

Yeah, realistically that isn't going to happen, replacing 10 speakers with 1-3 is tough as it is, much less when those 10 speakers were designed for the space they are in and those 1-3 are jammed into an enclosure with the amp and battery in a single unit... I mean the closest you will get is a one of the big JBL Party Boxes which honestly isn't very portable at like 75 pounds and 45 inches tall, not to mention they run a grand or so. If you just want decent sound quality -AND- portability the JBL Flip, Charge, or even the Extreme series are pretty decent, but for high end quality you are going to be going well over the $500 mark... KEF, Bowers & Wilkens, Sonos, etc. And Bose... Yeah, I am not a huge fan... I would take the Infinity system in my Hyundai over it in a heartbeat for sound quality.

I wouldn't recommend any Earfun speaker to someone who isn't very tech savy. Every Earfun speaker sounds mediocre out of the box and they need EQing. I really like my UBOOM X, but I just can't recommend it to my mom. That's why my mom has a JBL Charge. Also, any of the stock (normal or OLUV's) EQs are way too focused on deep bass, which isn't the best with classical music. And it's not very portable I think, it's rather huge.
