As others mentioned, latency is a bitch. You can still buy the older generation JBL speakers for now, I just picked up a second Clip 3 - which still has an Aux-in and doesn't (noticeably) suffer from latency or extensive signal processing. I use them together for my micro setup (with a TRS>dual TS splitter) to get a stereo image. Low end is indeed lacking, but still pretty decent for their size. I mentioned it elsewhere yesterday, but the Boss Cube Street Mini is great for keyboards, and it's portable & battery powered. Has a dedicated (non-guitar) instrument channel with a clean signal, and no latency. You can save a few bucks and get the Headrush Go FRFR amp instead, but I think that's a little bit bulkier.
I still can't update. My clip 3 refuses to die even after many years.
JBL Clip series. Incredibly convenient to use on a bike. Easily attaches to the bike's cables without any hassle.
JBL Clip 3, bought it new years ago for $35 and it still works great, holds battery life for days before a recharge, and has water resistance if you get caught in the rain suddenly (it actually floats in the pool)! Biggest draw is the carabiner clip that is built into the unit; I often hook it on my belt loop, but satchel would also work. A few of the carriers in my office have asked about it so they could get one; it really packs a punch for a small speaker. I think they’re on the Clip 4 or 5 by this point—can’t speak to the quality of those, but the Clip 3 still costs less than $50 and it’s awesome.
I haven’t used the JBL Flip, but I have the JBL Clip 3 and have used it for a few years. Not daily, but I rarely ever have to charge it and it’s got great sound for the mini package it is.
get him a clip 3 or go 3
Convenient yet trash, at least the Clip 3/4 we’ve used/have. Picked up a refurbished Bose SoundLink Flex 2 for $89, may check out their Clip-esque style speakers for that super small, portability.
