r/Bluetooth_Speakers β€’ Why are people now fine with a mono experience? β†’

I thought you must be wrong about the early Flips. My first bluetooth speaker was a Flip 2 and I only stopped using it because it wouldn't charge any longer and the process to replace the battery just wasn't worth it. Looked up the specs and was surprised to see that it has 2 40mm drivers. And it came with a carrying case! Things have come a long way since then but I just started the search for a replacement for my second bluetooth speaker and noted the flip 6/7 is mono. That was surprising but then I wondered how far apart do the drivers need to be to make stereo a real thing (or how close do I need to be). Makes sense to be mono. And if you pair two then we have both a tweeter and mid rather than a left and right with two basic drivers as in many other speakers. But I am only buying one speaker now. My searches before for a small speaker were simple: Flip was the big name in 2014. I saw a sale for Tribit Stormbox in 2019. Now I'm researching and it's so difficult to decide what to go with, especially when comparing single vs dual driver models. I think that means most name brand ones are good quality and I won't have regrets no matter which I go with. Thanks for your post.

OK, we have your budget. That's a good start. What's your use case? Where do you listen? What types of music? How portable do you want the speaker? How big is TOO big? I own several Tribit speakers (a pair of Stormbox Micro 2s and a new Lava), as well as Bose (a Smart Speaker and a pair of Flex 2s). I've owned JBLs in the past (Charge 5, Charge 5 WiFi, Flips 2-4) and have nothing against them, but my use case precluded keeping any of the JBLs. I have the paired Micro 2s attached to my sailboat's lifelines in the cockpit for good stereo sound, and down below in the cabins I switch out my pair of Bose Flex 2s with Sony XG300s depending on my mood. If I need loud, it's the Sony's. If I need detail and am playing "quieter" tunes, it's the Flex 2s. On the dock when I'm gardening, washing boats, or entertaining, I pull out the Tribit Lava...or sometimes grab my pair of Sonos Move 2s if I have a group of more than 20 people on the back deck or foredeck (Sea Ranger 52 Trawler) so we can cover both areas.

JBL Charge is a good pick, or the Flip series if you're more concerned about size, although they are both pretty compact. Soundcore Motion Boom is a good choice as well, however it's a bit more awkwardly shaped if you're trying to fit it in a bag.

JBL charge series is always a great buy, With a $150 budget. I have had my JBL charge 3 since 2018, only recently upgraded to the party box series, because I wanted something bigger and with way more bass. For a desk speaker the charge 4-5 is perfect, it has enough bass with EQ added. The flip and the other smaller ones that you can clip on, are going to be slightly quiet compared to the charge series. The charge series is the happy medium between good sound and portability.

JBL flip series. Fits perfect in a bottle holder or can be mounted to the frame.

Megablast weighs 2.4lbs (About the same weight as my Soundcore Motion plus. I have a .6lb Tribit Micro that does a nice job for its size but it does not have much bass outdoors. (It straps on to handlebars easily). A speaker like the JBLflip weighs about 1lb and has more bass than my little Tribit. The Earfun Uboom L is just a little bit heavier than a Flip but has better sound and costs less. At 1.4lbs it is a whole lb. less than the Megaboom. The small Uboom will sound better than the Tribit Micro or any of the extra small speakers so I would consider that option if you want something significantly smaller than a hyperboom that does not sacrifice your sound .

Have you considered using the JBL Flip series? They're compact, portable, and deliver surprisingly good sound quality for production

Im not really particular with the lows, mids, highs of a speaker but it’s pretty much decent compared to my previous JBLs (Flip and Go)

Go4 is very size specific for like when you want something light to throw on the belt loop and walk around, flip series would be what is being looked for
