I use a 17" Asus ROG Strix XG17AHP portable monitor while on travel. It is an excellent gaming monitor while I'm on the road, but I definitely prefer being on my 27" monitor at home. Could I use the portable monitor full time? Yes. It's just not my ideal situation.

The XG17APH is an excellent portable gaming monitor. 1080p is a good resolution for a 17" monitor, it has higher pixel density than a 27" 1440p monitor.

ASUS ROG Strix Portable Monitor too expensive for you? I probably won't go for this cheap brand either. As the other guy said, Response Time is still quite a marketing thing so it's probably not as important compared to the refresh rate. Also, do you really need 1440p? At 17", you either go for 4K or just drop down to 1080p imo. 1080p and 1440p won't have that much of noticeable ppi difference for you to really notice the difference since its not even "Retina" yet. You will need to get 4K to get "Retina". Also, consider too whether you really need 144Hz, or more like can your laptop even drive that high. I personally use PC that have my main monitor of LG 32inch 1440p 144Hz VA panel, but my secondary is just plain old 1080p 60Hz, Dell P-series monitor. I personally am really fine with my secondary monitor since its literally just secondary monitor I put video on while I am working. Most ppl really does not need their secondary monitor to be as good as their main monitor.

4K on 17-inch is too much for some, but its "Retina". Its sorta apple-marketing term but basically the pixel is almost indistinguishable to most ppl's eye. It is for if you want to chase maximum fidelity, and if you want to use it for some creative works. Consider first whether you want to game on your second screen, or your main laptop screen. Most ppl getting secondary screen is using it more for productivity rather than anything else. So, it usually just hosts browser, youtube videos, files, etc. For that kind of things, 60Hz are honestly fine. You will forget that your mouse cursor is not as smooth as in your main soon enough when you stop thinking about it. You might even get OLED for your budget if you went for 13-14 inch. If you plan on gaming on your portable monitor, then I guess you shell out for premium on ROG's or just buy 2 cheap monitor.... The problem with having such large monitor, with that refresh rate, and resolution, is inevitably how to power the damn thing. I mean, it need to be still thin and small enough to be considered "portable". Even ROG Strix is only 1080p 240Hz.

I don't want to scare you but I'd just watch out for any charging issues- I have the XG16APHE (Newer version) and I've been having constant problems with it. I am in the middle of returning mine, had it for a year before it just stopped charging properly. If you're using the monitor while plugged in it will slowly discharge and you'll have to do a factory reset (power button + volume key) and charge it fully before using it again. There are many reddit posts about it and it seems to be a manufacturing defect. Asus also have the worst customer support (see gamersnexus channel about the scandal) so if you run into issues when you're out of warranty you'll be at a loss. Honestly I would recommend just returning it to save the headache later as it's most likely you'll run into issues with the battery later, at least the cheaper portable gaming monitors are replaceable but expensive ones like these you'd expect to last for long for the amount you pay.

I have the ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHP. Works great for me I just duplicate the Ally screen, lower the brightness on the X, and match the frame rate. Has a battery that lasts about 3 hours which with the X you’d get close to that even with some AAA games especially with that lowered brightness.

Don't. This monitor is such a pain in the butt to use properly, and the image isn't worth the premium.

I love my XG17 use it every day in my office as a second monitor now, but also when I travel. Iv had it for over a year for sure maybe even two, I don’t even know at this point. But I use it with my Zephyrus S17 The big thing is. If yours doesn’t come with a tripod you’re going to have to build one out of random metal tripod components. Between Neewer and Ulanzi I built an awesome one.

I have the same portable monitor and thinking about getting the ally x. Does the ally x keep the monitor charged if the ally x is plugged into the wall? Trying to think about the simplest setup for a LAN party

The monitor doesn't have to be powered separately, I've used it with my laptop and it can display and charge the monitor with a single cable. Was curious if the ally x could do that too. Anyways, thanks!

Yeah, I just ordered it on Amazon since I already have 1 LG monitor that I could pair up with it when I’m just leaving it on my desk and I was sold on the stand upgrade albeit 100 dollars more. Definitely a lot of cash but the 240hz will be nice to pair with my 144hz monitor for a mix.

Sorry for replying so late, I just opted for the Asus one with 1080p 240hz because I had the money. The monitor is really good and I like the custom folding stand that it came with (extra $100) however there seems to be some noticeable edge backlight bleed that others have also pointed out which is just enough to be a cause of concern especially because this is a 550 dollar portable monitor. The brightness of the display is 300 bits which is just sufficient enough not not complain about at 100% but if you’re using it on the battery mode you’ll have to turn it down to make the display last longer and the brightness difference becomes very noticeable. Overall I’m still gonna keep it because it’s the best you’ll get for the price, the build quality is superb minus the plastic bezels and I don’t mind the bleed enough that I’d want to return it plus I think there’s a 3 year warranty on it so I’ll only send it back if the bleed gets noticeably bad TLDR: I got the Asus XG17APHE, best portable monitor to get for the money, cool folding stand, build mostly of aluminum, 240hz display very nice, speakers are trash, plastic bezels on front are trash, and Noticeable backlight bleed on the edges (almost enough to not buy) If they made an update to this monitor what I’d want to see is: (full aluminum frame housing, higher PPI at 1440p or more, higher LCD display brightness at 400 nits minimum while fixing the backlight bleed or just switching to mini led/oled, and get better WAY better speakers)
