I'm running one of these and it's not bad. [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081SGZX1X?ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_fed\_asin\_title&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081SGZX1X?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1)
You are right to be careful here, because a lot of portable monitors expect USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and that Inspiron setup will not provide it. I helped someone with a similar non-USB-C laptop before, and the clean path was a portable display with HDMI input plus separate USB power. The [ASUS ZenScreen MB16AH](https://featherab.com/shopit?ASUS+ZenScreen+MB16AH) is the kind of model I would look at because it supports HDMI instead of depending only on USB-C video. Just make sure the listing includes the HDMI cable or adapter it needs, and plan to power it from a wall charger or USB-A power source. Avoid USB-C-only portable monitors unless they clearly list HDMI input.
as someone who does a lot of spreadsheet work on the go, i've found 16-inch can work but has limits. the [ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC](https://metadoraffi-eng.github.io/shopit?search_keywords=ASUS+ZenScreen+MB16AC+portable+monitor) is what i use and its 1080p resolution is fine for most sheets, though you'll be scrolling more than on a larger display. honestly the bigger issue is scaling - make sure whatever you get has good resolution and adjustable stand angles. i'd also consider the [ViewSonic TD1655](https://metadoraffi-eng.github.io/shopit?search_keywords=ViewSonic+TD1655+portable+touchscreen+monitor) if you want touch capability for navigation. for heavy excel though, i sometimes pair it with my laptop screen to have two views open, which helps a lot with larger workbooks.
ran into this last year. 16 is doable but scaling will be your make or break. you want something with at least 1440p resolution if your eyes are doing sheets all day. 1080p at 16 inches makes text tiny or you scale up and lose screen real estate. i landed on the asus zenscreen mb16ac - matte finish helps with glare too. just check your laptop's usb c can deliver power over it.
used the arzopa z3fc with my m4 mini and it worked fine but had one weird quirk - power delivery over usb-c was finicky. if you want something that just works, [ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC](https://featherab.com/shopit?search_keywords=ASUS+ZenScreen+MB16AC+portable+monitor) or [LG Gram Portable](https://featherab.com/shopit?search_keywords=LG+Gram+portable+monitor) are safer bets. the arzopa's 180hz is overkill for travel anyway - you're not gaming on a mac mini in a hotel room. i'd grab the asus personally, better build quality and fewer driver headaches.
I've looked into this before and honestly using a laptop as an external monitor is pretty limited - most laptops don't have video input ports, only outputs. What helped me when i needed portable display was getting a dedicated portable monitor. They're surprisingly thin and light, like the Asus ZenScreen or Lenovo ThinkVision portable displays. Tbh they connect via USB-C or HDMI and fit in a backpack easily. For your work travel situation, a 15-17 inch portable monitor would give you proper external display functionality without the laptop compatibility headaches.
I use the Asus Zenscreen MB16AC. It's an amazing monitor and I can carry it everywhere. I bought it on 2023, so maybe they have a better model now.
I checked here, and it weighs 960g (screen 700g + 260g the screen protector/base). which one do you use now?
I've been using an ASUS MB16AC for like 2 years now and it's pretty solid. USB-C power and display through one cable is clutch when you're moving around a lot The stand is kinda flimsy but for the price it does what I need
I tried portable monitors for a bit (ASUS MB16AC) but honestly the biggest issue wasn't the second screen - it was what's ON my screen during demos. When you're doing split-screen workflows with client data visible, the stress of accidentally showing the wrong thing is worse than working off one screen. What helped me more than hardware was setting up a completely separate browser profile just for client demos. Nothing personal in it, no other client data, zero chance of showing sensitive stuff during screen shares. Launch it before demos, close it after. Sounds simple but it removed so much anxiety. For the actual monitor setup, I ended up just using my laptop screen for demos and keeping all my reference material / notes on my phone next to me. Not ideal but way more portable than dragging hardware around. What kind of software are you demoing? Curious if it's SaaS implementations or something else.
I use it all days every days for code!
I have a 15inch m4 macbook air and i use my old asus zenscreen 15inch. It's now my secondary monitor even at home and i keep my macbook docked. At coffees i have the screen over my laptop screen to take less space on a overly expansive stand lol ( FLEXSTA ). At work i have them side by side with my laptop on a roost stand. At home i have it rotated 90degree next to my studio display
