I bought one of those cheap Amazon portable monitors last year, purely out of curiosity. Spent maybe $100 on a 17 inch 1080P screen with 2 HDMI and 2 USB-C. Frankly, I'm blown away by it. It supports 120hz and HDR (not very well), and works immediately with anything I plug into it. I don't have a daily use for it, but find myself thankful that I picked it up all the time, so I totally get you just plugging it in to "test it out". My family is sick of me plugging any of their USB-C devices into it and practically run from me when I'm walking around the house with that display in-hand lol
