This isn’t what you asked, but I’d try a sample of expensive but really high quality whey protein with no crappy fillers like Optimum Nutrition has in it. Transparent Labs is what I would use if I could afford it. I personally use Ascent, which is mostly whey protein isolate. It does have some concentrate, thus contains some lactose and makes me a little farty lol. But for a pretty good protein that is at Costco for $50 in 4lb bag, it works. I also eat a ton of Oikos Triple Zero yogurt (also sold at Costco in a multipack) I add a half scoop of Ascent with some fruit, honey, walnuts, plain cheerios and cinnamon. F-ing delicious. Around 30 grams of protein.
Ascent from Costco. 4lbs for $50. (I’ve gotten it for $40 on sale.) You won’t find a better quality protein for the price and quantity. No artificial sweeteners or junk like Optimum Nutrition, which they also have at Costco. It’s mostly isolate but does have a little concentrate, so if you are sensitive to lactose it might not be for you but I like it.
I get the Ascent protein from Costco. It does have some whey concentrate but no artificial sweeteners or junk like ON Gold Standard. It tastes good, has pretty good ingredients and is the best quality protein out there for the price and quantity.
Get the Ascent brand. Very clean whey without fillers
I like Ascent's whey-based protein powders, especially the vanilla. They are not so overly sweet as a lot of them seem to be which I appreciate. I like to mix it with a variety of other things to keep myself from developing an aversion to it. My favorite is mixing it with orange juice, which tastes a lot like an orange julius. I also like to mix it in the blender with strawberries, which is really close to a strawberry shake. In addition to shakes during the day I like to have one right before bed, which gives my body resources through the night. I also get a store brand unflavored whey protein powder from my local natural grocery store. It is great to mix into a lot of regular foods for an added protein boost. We make pancakes substituting some of the flour with it as one example and it's not far off from the normal flavor but it has a good amount of protein. It's all really personal as far as flavor goes, so it is worth trying a few brands and alternating through options so he doesn't get too tired of the same old thing.
Ascent protein is superior to ON and Kirkland. No crappy sweeteners, 3rd party tested, minimal filler ingredients.
Fairlife is considered the best by many of us, specifically this one: [https://fairlife.com/nutrition-plan/chocolate/](https://fairlife.com/nutrition-plan/chocolate/) they are not all the same. However, it gets expensive. To save money I buy a protein powder (Ascent on Amazon is good and not too expensive for a good whey protein powder) and mix it with fat free Fairlife milk. If I want to spend even less money I will buy regular grocery store fat free milk.
I was on this for a while and recently switched to Ascent. This is good, comparatively sweet. Mixes well. I find Ascent is less sweet and easier on the stomach; doesn’t sit in your gut afterwards. Will continue with Ascent for now.
“Passes through”? No. But they have slightly different ingredients and types of whey. Levels is concentrated whey. Ascent is whey isolate.
