I use whey, usually their whey concentrate or the New Zealand whey. They do have several other options but I've never been a fan of plant based powders so I've never tried theirs.
I almost exclusively use unflavoured unsweetened protein powder, I really like Canadian Protein (they do ship elsewhere if you are not Canadian). It's a really solid product and they have different lines for different preferences and budgets, they put really good sales on from time to time, and you can access the batch test analysis for every bag you purchase. They do also have some really yummy flavours too, I like buying their little sample packs so I can try lots of different ones without committing to a whole bag.
The only negative part about their testing is for heavy metals It is based on report from the supplier. So if the supplier is hiding something, Canadian Protein won\`t be able to catch it. All other metrics seems to be sent directly from Canadian Protein to the tester. At least thats what seems to be the case when I was reading their reddit posts/comments.

Unflavoured just means there's no flavour added to it, it's just the natural flavour of the whey. Tasting notes vary hugely between people, they have sample packs so you can just try a bunch without committing to a bag. The Canadian Protein ones I tried 2 years ago were New Zealand Whey concentrate, New Zealand Whey isolate, whey protein isolate, hydrolysed whey protein isolate, premium whey blend, premium whey isolate, egg white protein powder. Some were absolutely vile (to me, plenty of other people don't mind the taste), others almost disappeared if you mixed them into hot chocolate or a smoothie. From my tasting notes, the hydrolysed whey and premium whey isolate disappeared the best in chocolate milk. New Zealand Whey and whey isolate worked basically fine mixed with lemonade. The other combinations had varying levels of milky/chalky/vomity/weird taste to me but that's very individual.
Check out [Canadian Protein](https://canadianprotein.com) It’s made in Windsor. You can buy it in bulk to save some $$$; however, whey is not precisely cheap (as it used to be). I’d say there are 2 things to consider when buying Whey. There’s 1. Whey isolate and 2. Whey concentrate. 1 is a higher protein percentage by mass. Ideal for people who watch their calories (I started with this since I was overweight) 2 is less protein percentage by mass. It means more calories to achieve the same grams of protein (I moved to this after a year of losing fat, it’s cheaper) You can find the isolated at Costco in 2kg bags or order online when it is on sale. I have tried both and quality is top notch :) these are third party tested. I drink 1 scoop after my workout at night maybe 2 hours before going to bed. I’d say whey concentrate in bulk is a decent deal right now. If you are trying to grow muscle it’s a good one. If you are trying to lose some fat and minimize losing muscle, try the isolated :) Since this is your first time trying whey, maybe go for the 2kg from Costco. The protein percentage is lower than 2. You would pick this one if you want to gain mass (a lot of calories)) It really depends on your goal :) I’d also recommend you calculate your daily calorie intake and the macros (carbs, protein, fats) you need based on your body and goal. Based on that you can see what is the best option for you!
If you care about what processed foods you put into your body (I do being 30+), the grass-fed New Zealand whey ingredient list is incredibly clean. For quality protein products, they cannot be beat at their current price point. Unfortunately, they have been slowly raising their prices, with the biggest hike being in the last 6 months.
I buy Canadian protein directly from their website since I like their unflavoured grass-fed New Zealand whey, which Costco doesn’t carry. I find the flavoured ones too sweet for me so I just add my own stevia to taste. Their website has discounts and promos every so often, which helps.
TC Nutrition is based out of Saskatoon and has an amazing product list and great taste. I've also used Canadian Protein for bulk orders.
I buy 2kg bags from Canada protein when they go on sale. Some flavours are better than others, but I like chocolate and strawberry for shakes, and banana cream and cappuccino for mixing with my Greek yogurt in the morning. They also have a protein “coffee” which is basically just coffee flavoured whey powder with caffeine added. I use a milk warmer and warm up a cup of protein milk and mix with that protein coffee powder and an extra shot of espresso. Between that and my yogurt with whey I get over 80g of protein for breakfast at about 550 calories.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard, even at full price, from Costco, is about a 1.15 Canadian a serving, for 24g of protein in 120 calories. I've recently switched to Canadian Protein, which is a brand of protein that's available in bulk, and it works out to around 1.05 CAD/serving, for 27g of protein in 125 calories. Even if you don't buy it from costco, most whey isolate typically will cost less than 1.50 a serving. You just have to mix it yourself.
