Not sure if this is a frugal option, but Cole’s does a pretty decent whey protein concentrate that tastes like skim milk powder on its own and blends pretty well with other things. Usually just drink it up with milk or make a smoothie with a bit of vanilla essence I don’t believe there are any sweeteners or colouring added, so it is pretty pure as far as protein powders go. Also doesn’t have the acrylic/ plastic taste that some of the protein companies seem to have in their products .Never had any upset bowels with it either

whey concentrate is better than pea protein, also from coles. You can add some extra milk powder and some whey concentrate. The whey will increase the protein count by more but the milk powder will make it taste better.

Coles has unflavoured whey protein concentrate, which is 100% whey with no additives. I like the plain creamy taste and just mix it into milk. Cost is $25 for 500g.

You can buy individual sachets from Coles if you want to try before you buy a big packet. Usually the whey protein powders dissolve and taste better than plant-based proteins.

I buy the wellness road unflavoured one from Coles. I add it to yogurt, or I make an iced black coffee and add it to that. I absolutely can't stand any flavoured powders because I don't have sweet tooth at all. They make me gag.

I hate all flavoured protein powders, no matter how many I try. I used to have them decades ago but can't stomach them these days. Now I use unflavoured (from Bulk Nutrients and Coles Wellness Road) and I flavour them myself as needed with syrups from Cashmere Syrups in Brisbane. Their light vanilla is great, as are many. I also use them to flavour my (protein or not) Ninja Creamis. 😋 Can recommend. If you're around Brisbane northside you can pick up from their Brendale warehouse during the week. https://cashmeresyrups.com.au/
