r/Marathon_TrainingWhat are your guys's race day shoes for half marathon/marathons?

My most recent race shoe purchase is the AP4. Haven’t run a full in them yet, but have done some shorter races. Previously, I’ve raced halfs and fulls in the Clifton 8, Vaporfly 2, Alphafly 1, Endorphin Speed 2, Adios Pro 3, Zegama 1, Topo Specter 1, Endorphin Trail, Endorphin Pro 3, Endorphin Speed 3, and Tyr Valkyrie Speedworks. AP3 has been my favorite of those. Ran 2 halfs and 2 fulls in them plus an ultra and then put a lot of miles in them as a daily trainer. Great shoe. AF1 was great too, but I did a lot more daily miles than races in those.

I had both and ran several marathons in the AP3 and one in the AP4. The AP3 felt faster, but the AP4 was more comfortable and my times are more reflective of my training at the time than the shoes. Either is great for a marathon.

I wear a lot of Saucony shoes — Kinvara, Endorphin Speed, Endorphin Pro; I even have a pair of Endorphin Trails. However, I love the Adidas Adios Pro line. They’ve been my go to for race shoes for the last 3 years. That would be hard to give up.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a pair of ASICS Gel Nimbus if you can get them on sale to meet your budget. Ran my first half marathon with them. r/runningshoegeeks have a whole list of recommendations on their wiki. I’ve had in, order of purchase: - Brooks Ghost 15 - only pair I’ve bought Instore after a gait analysis. - ASICS Gel Nimbus 25 - Adidas Adios Pro 3 - Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra (for trails) - ASICS Superblast 2 Bought all but the Brooks Ghost from Sportsshoes.com. They often have good sales and discounts. At time of purchase: - Adidas Adios Pro 3 were £135 down from £210 - ASICS Gel Nimbus 25 were £112 down from £180 - Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed were £112 down from £160 - ASICS Superblasts never go on sale Sizing: Went half a size up for the Gel Nimbus 25s, Adios Pro 3 and Agravic Speed. Went true size for Ghost and Superblast 2. I am a very mid runner. I mainly use the Superblast 2s and the Agravic Speeds. The Brooks Ghost were highly recommended on forums and shops. Upper was comfortable but the midsole left a lot to be desired. I moved on from them very quickly to the Gel Nimbus. The Ghosts have been relegated to generic gym usage. Both of the Adidas are ultra light weight and designed for faster runners than me. Less comfy upper but really fun to run in after the initial break in and issues below. They are both narrow and the insole on both pairs cut into my right foot quite a bit when I first started running in them to the point I would wear blister plasters if I chose to run in them. That issue is gone now but the right foot on the Adios Pro 3 still never feels quite right. Chances are it’s just this particular pair and I forget about it once I’m actually running. ASICS Gel Nimbus and ASICS Superblast have convinced me to go for ASICS race shoes when my Adidas Adios Pro 3s give out. They’re super comfy. Ran my first ever half on the Gel Nimbus and my first marathon in the Superblast 2s.

I have over 1100 miles on my first pair of Superblast 2 and they still feel great. I’ve relegated them to treadmill use just in case, but honestly they feel the same as my other pairs (one at 700 miles, another at a bit under 500). I’ve had plenty of people call BS on this but I’m not the only one to take them to 1000+ without issue. The other workhorse has been the Adios Pro 3. I have almost 500 miles on my first pair, and the only issue I have is a tear in the upper that is slowly getting worse (I tore it catching a rock, it wasn’t due to it falling apart on its own). I still use them for long runs with progressions/workouts anyway. You can often find these (as well as the AP4) for $100+ off if you’re not picky about colorway… I went to go pick up a pair of Evo SL recently to try them out and saw a blue/green AP4 on sale for the same price and just picked that up instead :)

May be a touch too narrow, but 95kg runner here who has the Adidas Adios Pro 3 and Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3. Latter is definitely quicker, but only take them up to HM distance.

Saucony Endorphin Speed 2, which aren't available anymore unfortunately (and the newer models are not quite the same from what I've heard). My current favorite all around shoe is Asics Superblast 2. My current favorite racing shoe is Adidas Adios Pro 3 (haven't tried the 4 yet but I think it's similar).

Surprised no shouts for Hoka Mach X 3. Not super wide, but as someone who wears a ton of Altras they definitely are not too tight, much better than the Adios Pro 3 or Bostons (at least the 12) for sure. Amazing long run shoe, good pop, cushion, comfort.

Superblast 2 would literally be the perfect shoe for a 5hr marathon. Carbon plated is just going to be harsher under foot. I've run in the pro 3s and I would not use them for a marathon over 4hrs

Remember, the supershoes come with the best foams you can have ender your feet for long distances. For perspective, I am 40, weigh 190lbs, my 5k record is 26.43, 10k, 55.01 and half just at 2 hours. I have worked and continue to work on my posture through every race and i can assure you that my 500$ Evo Pro shoes absolutely make me faster than my Adios Pro 4 which is also noticeably faster than my Adios Pro 3. If you get no other benefits, the premium foams will minimize your leg fatigue. Buy what feels comfortable, fast, you can afford, and actually like.

Dont worry about those time claims. If they feel great for you, buy them. I have several pairs and use the from everything from 5k races to half marathon long runs. my marathon time is currently estimated above 4 hours with a 2 hour half marathon record. The only shoes I will choose over the AP4 are the Pro Ovo 1 and 2 which are supposed to be for even faster runners. For me, I want the most premium foam I can buy if I am going to be running 2 to 4 hours. I started buying adidas shoes with the Takumi Sen 10 (supposedly for 5k) and Adios Pro 3. I was unstable on the Takumi Sen 10 at about 210lb mass but the AP3 was great and I used them for everything from 1 mile jogs to 5k runs. I have dialed back my carbon plate adoption by picking up some Evo SL and Nike Vomero premium pairs for training, but I will still run 5Ks on my AP4

I’ve had black toenail in a variety of shoes & sizing so I wouldn’t worry too much it was down to the AP4. I’ve been using AP3 the last few years & can’t wait to use the AP4!
