r/AskRunningShoeGeeksBest daily trainer that feels similar to a race day shoe?

For me, Evo sl or endorphin speed. I could use those for daily, but id also have no issue racing in them. In my rotation they occupy a big middle zone where they can do a lot of different things. Ive never had issue with durability on the speeds (800km+). But i also think there are better race day shoes, and better trainers. Shoes are so specialized now, theyre each designed for a goal, and no one shoe will be perfect at everything. I have 4 shoes in my rotation. And actually the easiest one to cut (if I had to) would be my race day shoes (metapseed edge paris), because I really only use them a couple times a year for races.

I find the metaspeed paris quite roomy in the toe box. Probably the most roomy of any of the shoes I own. I have the edge version.

Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo for this weekend's marathon. I ran a 10k race a couple of weeks ago in the Metaspeed Edge Paris. 32k trail race I did earlier this year was in the Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra.

I’m a total ASICS freak and have really learned to listen to what different shoes are telling me. I honestly can’t recommend the Metaspeed Sky Paris or Edge Paris enough. The biggest thing is understanding your mechanics. As the pace increases, pay attention to what happens with stride length versus cadence. If you naturally open up and lengthen your stride, go Sky. If you tend to quicken turnover and keep a tighter stride, the Edge is the better play. For racing, I’d strongly suggest one of those plated options for both the half and the full. They just feel smoother, more efficient, and help you hold pace longer when fatigue sets in. I still love the Megablast for daily miles and uptempo training because it’s fun and forgiving, but on race day those plated ASICS are simply on another level.

Yeah, I did a 5k in mine, so I know what you mean. That said, I think Endo Elite 2s are best for steady, fastish marathon pace miles. For shorter distances, I prefer to something a little firmer and more stable, like the Metaspeed Edge Paris.

Gosh, I've tried loads. Brooks Ghost is a popular one. Saucony Ride. The asics Gel Nimbus are hugely popular, and the Japan range one is their most ethical yet. Nike Pegasus was a staple of mine but has become more narrow, so I can not use it anymore. My favourite has been the Hoka Bondi as I've wide feet. The toe box is very roomy, so there's no rubbing when the feet swell on longer runs or when changing to thicker socks in the winter. The cushioning is amazing and enables me to run pain-free (no ACL or PCL in right knee) However, I don't use it for speed work as it's just too plush and not responsive when running on a treadmill. I recently bought the asics metaspeed edge Paris, but they are crazy expensive at £200 but worth every penny. They are a great shoe for speedwork all the way up to marathon distance and are the lightest shoe I've ever worn. They suit cadence mid foot strike runners. The Sky is for those with a more open stride. The height of the toe box is lower than in some of their other running shoes, but hasn't caused me any issues as yet, but I've only run a distance of 5 miles at a time in them so can't comment on longer distances yet. I will likely stay in this as an all-around does everything kind of shoe when my Hokas die as the midfoot cushioning in these has been sublime. It's also a bonus not having to have a separate speed and mileage shoe.

I have…a lot of shoes. My next 5k will probably be the asics Metaspeed sky Tokyo As already stated the Metaspeed is their top flight shoe. Sky for stride runners edge for cadence runners. Tokyo is the most recent one

PR'd Twin Cities Marathon in Asics Metaspeed Edge on Sunday -- amazing experience. Just cushy enough to feel natural, light, and so so speedy. I tested them with a half a few weeks ago and there were immediate pace differences compared with my normal trainers. Did Brooklyn Half 2025 in Saucony Endorphin Elite -- also fast, and great rocking feeling, but a little hard feeling and personally felt more unstable to me than Asics Metaspeed. I ran NYC marathon in 2024 with Asicas Novablast 4 -- honestly these are still some of my fav shoes -- incredibly comfortable and bouncy feeling. Not racing shoes necessiraly but worked very well for my first marathon, and lasted for long after the race.

I was sub 90 minute (86) and ran in race shoes (asics metapeed edge+) , tbh I was probably a little too slow for them at HM pace, they seemed better at 5,10 & 15k for me, super trainer is what you (and I) probably need

Honestly unrelated as most people increase both cadence and stride length as they run faster For what its worth, if able, try in store. I found the Edge was more stable for me than the sky, but honestly both felt so unstable for me! So best to see what is best for you

Do shoes really lose 'bounce'? IDK. I'm reading lotsa reports that the NB5s don't feel bouncy after some pretty low mileage. Whereas, my experience is that they never made me 'bounce' (they're not an aggressive, performance-based shoe like my Metaspeed Edges) but their cushioning is good during long runs. Two observations: 1. When I'm doing long runs, the cushioning consciously kicks in after say 20-25km. This has a tangible benefit as it helps my fatigued legs stay strong for the last 10km or so. This is when I consciously feel the 'trampolines' softening the load. 2. I have a dicky toe on one food as it broke decades ago and has some sort of a dull pain (i.e. I can't feel anything if I scratch underneath it and a dull pain grows in it if there isn't adequate cushioning). IMO the NB4s and NB5s are some of the best shoes for this toe. Noting... I wear little silicone cushions when using Metaspeed Edge's as they lack the said cushioning. IMO we should be expecting comfort rather than shoes that somehow 'bounce'. I suspect the 'new shoe bounce' is a bit of a marketing gimmick for most shoes.
