Based on 1 year's data from Mar 23, 2026 How it works
I used metaspeed edge Tokyo for my mara yesterday. Finished a little faster than you but if I knew they were coming out, would have bought the ASICS megablast. They say it's THE shoe for 3:30+ marathoners
Hi all I am new to running and overall fitness. In 2025 I had started my fitness journey and lost 21kg. I am 187cm, 96kg male and plan to loose 5 to 10kg this year. My times are pretty slow...10k: 59min and i did my first half marathon in 2.20. This year I am focusing on more weight loss and preparation for a full marathon next year...I am taking it slow and I avoid injuries etc. I am running 30 to 50km a week depends where I am in training. I am also doing 2 to 3 metcon and strenght session and swap some runs accordingly to avoid strains etc. This year I plan to run few 5k, 10k and 2 halfs with maybe 30km long run at the end of the year. My current shoe rotation is asics only as I love how they work for me: Superblast 2...my staple base and long run shoe Nimbus 27... easy and recovery Metaspeed edge tokyo...my recent purchase for 5k race and intervals.. My marathon pace is 6.30 min/km My threshold is around 5.20min/km. I run and track all with Garmin Fenix 8. Metaspeeds are a bit harsh..feel narrow but when running they are ok..and I had few runs in them...usually long threshold runs from garmin daily suggested workouts..like [email protected]/km pace with 10 min warmup and cool down at 6.30/km. Legs are trashed after that but metaspeeds edge tokyo feel fast..demanding but boy they quick. I don't want to trash my racer shoes and I am looking for dedicated shoe to handle such threshold or tempo Workouts. Going below 6min/km in Superblast 2 feels like super hard work vs Metaspeed. I was considering: - megablast - sonicblast - magic speed 5. What would be your take? I am preferring asics.
Yep. Parked them for race day only...5km no problem. I did 8km session with tempo intervals in between and Edge Tokyo felt ok...aggressive but fast. I want similar feel with less aggression and plate to get used to it. I did that 8km on first run and only felt my calves a bit more. I am running for a year now...and rewarded myself with a proper race shoe. I know my feet are not worthy such power probably ;) but for my 5k in a few weeks they will help for sure. I choose Edge Tokyo as I am mostly cadence runner (190+ when running fast)..my form is to increase turn over and run efficiently to avoid strains on my joints and Edge Tokyo have that springy roll off that makes below 6min/km super easy for me. Same speed in superblast 2 feels like real hard work and It was eye opening for me that I need dedicated...plated trainer like Magic Speed 5 or similar.
Thank you all for the input. I ordered Magic Speed 5 in same size as Metaspeed and Superblast 2. My rotation would be: - easy and recovery: Nimbus 27 - base and long with marathon pace: Superblast 2 - threshold and speed: Magic Speed 5 - races up to 10km: Metaspeed Edge Tokyo. I will keep loosing weight. Target is 90kg and low body fat...I am doing Metcon/strenght on top keep in mind. I am awaiting for Superblast 3 to come up. Probably would instantly buy them as my SB2 have almost 500km and I catched 1cm glass into them my last run on the heel..so they will be retired when SB3 would come up.
I do all my training in Superblast 2 (44.5) but recently bought the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo (44.5) and they fit like a glove whereas the Superblast are a bit tight around the toes.
The Metaspeed will give you a little more room than the Superblast 2
I’ve done 1000km in my Superblast 2 and bought Metablast Edge Tokyo last week and have done 2x11 miles with intervals in each. No calf issues but I am hurting in new places. I think you should expect that too going to a new shoe that’s more aggressive but it could just be the shoe isn’t suited to you. The Tokyo comes in Edge and Sky versions to suit different running types so goes to show you how different things can be. The edge feel very fast to me.
I thought (that was my excuse to get new one 😁) Nimbus were a no go because they are 40.5 mm. I ended getting Metaspeed Edge Tokyo, they are 39.5 mm
As a fellow heel striker, I've fallen in love with the Metaspeed Edge Tokyo. Like you, I get confused by the terminology ASICS uses to distinguish between shows in the Blast/Metaspeed lines. But whether it's by design or just a convenient side effect of a "cadence" shoe, the Edge Tokyo feels like a rocketship under my heels; it's the first race shoe I've owned where the "bounce" happens exactly where I need it. I've read that it's not stable, but I previously used the Endorphin Pro 4 (which is ostensibly stable neutral) and actually find the Edge Tokyo comparable. Obviously YMMV, we're all different, but since you're a heel striker looking at ASICS stuff, figured this might be a useful data point.
I'm using the following, YMMV: Road: Track Workouts: Nike Vaporfly 3 Daily Trainer/Tempo/Performance Trainer: ASICS Megablast Recovery: ASICS Novablast 5 Long Runs: ASICS Superblast 2 Race Day: ASICS Metaspeed Edge Tokyo Trail: Gravel: Saucony Endorphin Edge Long Technical/Race: La Sportiva Prodigio Pro Short Technical/Race: HOKA Mafate Speed 4 Big believer that rotating shoes, if you can, is helpful for neuromuscular development/adaptation and injury prevention.
I am someone with a wide and flat midfoot, almost an anti-arch when I’m just standing. I also thought the Metaspeeds wouldn’t work for me until I demo-ed the Sky Paris at a local run shop event. They partnered with Asics and took us on a 19km route so I had a decently long run in them. When standing, the arch bump protruded and felt uncomfortable. When running at pace, I was aware of that arch bump but it somehow didn’t cause any discomfort or hot spots. I really considered a pair after but the narrow heel felt a bit too unstable for me to use as a marathon shoe. When the Edge Tokyo came out, I ended up getting a pair. The softer top layer of Leap made the arch bump feel even less noticeable than the Paris series, and the slightly wider heel felt just stable enough. I used them for a marathon last weekend and the arch wasn’t an issue at all. Just wanted to share my experience since I had the same worries you did at first about the Asics shoes. You’re a good amount faster than me so you’d be on feet for even less time.
For marathon training the megablast or superblast are great long run companions, but if you have the sonic blast that may already fit the bill. My personal rotation (I am currently in a marathon build targeting a 3:20) is Novablast for easy and recovery, Megablast for medium long, long runs, and Metaspeed Edge Tokyo for speed work and marathon pace long runs as well as race day. This covers all the bases for me.
I was a metaspeed sky Paris over edge Paris runner and had my previous marathon pb in those shoes. I was not a fan of the sky Tokyo, personally, and went with the edge... I recently ran my half marathon in them by a good margin and absolutely love them. I intend to wear in Boston. I'm consistent 190-210 cadence mid foot striker
I have tried so many of the super shoes and am with you, I like af3 and edge Tokyo the best at the moment!
Well reading your post, sounds like you regret not wearing the Paris for Boston last year? I have been using mine as a workout shoe, they have close to 200 miles and still feel good. You can absolutely wear them and be ok. I'd, personally, recommended taking the edge Tokyo out for a key workout or sneak in a 5k-10k race this weekend to trial them and then wear them in Boston if you like them. I think they are a significant upgrade over the sky Paris. They also feel very good on hills, which is obv important in Boston. Whatever you decide, good luck! Looking forward to Boston again this year!
I prefer saving the miles of my Edge Tokyo for my actual A races, but that’s just me. I’ll use the Edge Tokyo on those race rehearsals in long runs with longer blocks of target MP. For B-races and speed workouts, the MagicSpeed 5 is just a nice fit. Plus it has some similarities with the Tokyo line, which makes, imo, the MagicSpeed a good training partner to the Metaspeed.
