I don’t know much about shoes as I’m a novice, but I noticed the same about the magic speed. I liked the plated meta speed sky instead of the:)
I have wide feet and normally wear 10.5 2e. I currently race in the asics metaspeed sky series (currently have Paris) and they are fantastic. I did size up to an 11, but they are surprisingly comfortable with a stretchy upper. Ran my marathon in them in November and had no feet issues at all.
Honestly unrelated as most people increase both cadence and stride length as they run faster For what its worth, if able, try in store. I found the Edge was more stable for me than the sky, but honestly both felt so unstable for me! So best to see what is best for you
My current selection is Long runs / recovery- Evo SL & NB rebel v5 Tempo training / track - Endorphin speed 4 & Evo SL ATR Race shoe - ASICS metaspeed sky
I'm in that pace range and wore the Hoka Rocket X2 for my half marathon last weekend (building up to a Philly in a few weeks) and they felt so comfortable! I've worn the ASICS Metaspeed Sky for a 5k and 10k and it felt much more aggressive and less stable, and although it helped me go faster I didn't feel like I was really running in "my" shoes, I felt like I was rocking along on something that was technically good but almost intimidating! The Hokas felt almost as comfortable as the shoes I train in but a bit more race-y. So I haven't yet worn them for a full marathon but I'm feeling confident.
For mile racing in regard to things you can use I recommend bicarbonate along with iron supplements. As in regard to training your mileage is definitely enough to sub 5, although you'll want to try someone new workouts Some samples of this: (200 on 200 off x 16) (400s with 75 sec rest) ((200 200 400) ×5 ) ((200 600 200) x 4) As for gear, I find marathon road shoes to be a bit too heavy and squishy for the mile If you have an aggressive forefoot style either streakfly 2 or spikes(most road brands have a spike with their premium foam) Otherwise I'd probably go metaspeed sky or takumi Sen. There's also other light shoes like the cloud boom echo and puma fast r3
Edge will work well for you in all situations. Sky may work well for you. Edge feels like the VF2, or a softer puma shoe. Sky feels more like the adios pro 4. Neither shoe feels like the ones you have tried unfortunately.
I currently have too many shoes and not enough time to run. So calling them a rotation is probably stretching the truth. Hoping to get back into heavier mileage in the next couple months when I will make use of the rotation more. Long runs/recover: Puma MagMax Daily/Tempo: Evo SL, Velocity Nitro 2 (about to retire at 400 miles), just ordered Neo Zen 1 on discount to replace VN2, still occasionally dust off some WaveRider 27s and Neo Vistas that are over 600 miles Threshold/Intervals: Deviate Nitro 2 (about to retire at 420 miles), Brooks Hyperion Tempo (never really enjoyed them, likely to retire soon), Streakfly 2 Race: Metaspeed Sky (likely to retire soon) for 10K+, Streakfly 2 for 5k I don't love the Streakfly 2s and actually think my Achilles troubles that started last summer might have been caused by them (or more accurately by me doing too much in them). Would like to maybe find some Adios for cheap to use for workouts and 5ks and some Deviate Nitro Elite 3s for 10k + races.
Gosh, I've tried loads. Brooks Ghost is a popular one. Saucony Ride. The asics Gel Nimbus are hugely popular, and the Japan range one is their most ethical yet. Nike Pegasus was a staple of mine but has become more narrow, so I can not use it anymore. My favourite has been the Hoka Bondi as I've wide feet. The toe box is very roomy, so there's no rubbing when the feet swell on longer runs or when changing to thicker socks in the winter. The cushioning is amazing and enables me to run pain-free (no ACL or PCL in right knee) However, I don't use it for speed work as it's just too plush and not responsive when running on a treadmill. I recently bought the asics metaspeed edge Paris, but they are crazy expensive at £200 but worth every penny. They are a great shoe for speedwork all the way up to marathon distance and are the lightest shoe I've ever worn. They suit cadence mid foot strike runners. The Sky is for those with a more open stride. The height of the toe box is lower than in some of their other running shoes, but hasn't caused me any issues as yet, but I've only run a distance of 5 miles at a time in them so can't comment on longer distances yet. I will likely stay in this as an all-around does everything kind of shoe when my Hokas die as the midfoot cushioning in these has been sublime. It's also a bonus not having to have a separate speed and mileage shoe.
