Not Brooks but I love my asics superblast 2 for long runs. I average in the 10:50-11:40/mile range for slow long runs, and a bit quicker 10:10-10:30/mile for long run workouts, and they perform very well for me.
Fellow 100+kg runner, am happy with Boston 12/13, Prime X2 Strung, Superblast 2
Superblast 2 is the obvious answer. Some of the reviews I see are mental, in my eyes it’s just a boring but reliable shoe that will give back whatever you put into it and last forever. I can do speed sessions, light trails, long runs, recovery, even races and won’t feel like they’ve held me back Not once have I ever thought about what’s on my feet when I’m wearing them, I can just focus on running rather than “oooh, this shoe’s bouncy” or “my ankles hurt”
I have both Zoom Fly 6 and Superblast 2. They’re both great to be honest, super durable (which was my main issue with Novablast 5), comfortable and perfect for HM distance. If I had to choose one I would probably say Superblast - they’re less suited for speed than the Zoom Fly but they will look after your legs better. Also way more versatile, I can reach for them for pretty much any run and they’ll do the job. Would have no issue using them on race day for any long distance. ZF6 I mainly use for harder efforts and at 6:30/km the plate probably won’t do much for you
I just bought another pair of SB2s, by the time they’re done I’m praying Asics wake up and create a worthy successor. SB2 upper + Megablast midsole would be the best selling running shoe of all time. Not criticising the SB3, it’s just a frustrating switch-up from the first 2.
My dream shoe would be a Megablast midsole but with a Superblast 2 upper. I can deal with the Megablast upper, but it's definitely not my favourite. I agree with your comparison, it has a SB2 kind of feel but its much less brick like, and way more poppy. However, like you said the SB2 is more comfortable. As for OP, I think it would be fine for a heavier runner, it's fairly stable and not super soft. The foam comes alive like crazy at higher paces though, I love how it feels at faster paces.
Clyde of a runner here, so take what I say def with a grain of salt. The superblast 2 is currently my favorite shoe to do any types of runs in, unless my legs are absolutely beat. Others may disagree, since you said you don’t like “super soft” if you haven’t tried a pair of Gen 1 Neo vistas you can find a pair for like $90 probably now.
I’ve got the sb2 they are the only road shoe I have and I use them for everything (including tempo, track and threshold days) and they do fine. 40-60km a week depending on work with my big weeks being 80km. My paces in the shoe ranges from 6:00min/km down to high 3s When I first got them I thought they felt quite firm but quickly I learnt that that is something I liked about them as they seem to return a lot of my spring in each step. Calves the first few weeks felt a bit funny. Oh and currently have 800km on them and I weigh 75 kilograms or 165 pounds. Cannot speak for the others but I swear by the sb2
I run in the Boston 12 and Superblast 2 every day. The B12 has better grip and it's not even close.
Go to your local running store and try on some pairs. I really like the Adidas EVO SL($150), ASICS Superblast 2 ($200), New Balance SC Trainer (forget how much but these are carbon plated so a bit more$$). My heaviest use is the Superblasts and EVO SLs. Trying to get my hands on the ASICS Megablasts
2x EVO SL Boston 13 2x Endoephin Speed 4 Hoka Skyward x 3x ASICs Superblast 2 (2 pairs are EOL) 2x Vaporfly 3 (one for speed work. On for racing) 1x Alpha Fly 3 (distance racing) 1x Hoka Tectonic x2 for trails 1x Hoka Speedgoats for trails
I don't know. Maybe I speak from a place of privilege, but I have no issues finding shoes that work for me. Some of my favorite shoes (ASICS Superblasts and NIKE AF3 and VFs) are unisex. I have pretty narrow feet, too. I really don't know that there will be enough interest to make this financially sustainable for a shoe company, which will just mean an inferior product (crappier foams, uppers, plates) overall.
