I had the Hoka Bondi 8 and loved them at first. They got me started with walking then running. I tried on the Bondi 9 and didn't like them at all. I switched to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 and I love them.
Bondi 8s if you can find them. New balance 1080 v more
I ran in Bondi 8s for years, found New Balance 880s more comfortable, I am somewhere between a 2E and 4E width, 11 normal shoes, 11.5 running shoes.
I’m a dedicated Hoka wearer, and I just do speed work in my Bondis, which are the most cushion you can get. I can’t justify buying a “speed shoe” when I only do speed work 1x per week. Until last week I was rotating 3 pairs of Bondis, two of them Bondi 9s, the other was a Bondi 8. I had gotten one pair of the 9s and the 8s as a used resale, and the 8s worked great as a speed shoe. I also tried the carbon plated racing speed shoe in the panic that was 2020, and it just wasn’t worth the $$. I have ran in the Rincon, Mach, Clifton, and my forever favorite but sadly discontinued Cavu. I would say those are all decent contenders for a mid-weight shoe.
I have the Hoka Bondi SR in wide, and they fit my wide feet with bunions on the pinky sides of my feet, and they're great for me (granted I don't usually run in them, but I am on my feet a lot for my 12+ hour shifts). I bought my shoes through Hoka's website because it looks like they have an awesome return policy (I didn't have to put it to the test, so YMMV).
Note that the Bondi 8 had a wider fit than the newer Bondi 9. I need the wide in the Bondi 9.
I have semi-wide feet and have the Hoka Bondi 8 for casual wear and find them to be somewhat comfortable but I run in Asics Novablast 5 and find those to be extremely comfortable even with a wide foot!
Not a runner but do a lot of walking around my suburb on concrete paths. Used to be ASICS but started getting a lot of hip and knee pain (I'm over 50). An older acquaintance recommended Hokas as he'd been put on to them by an OT post hip surgery. Love my Hokas. Have had Bondi mostly - 7, 8 & now 9. Also have a couple of pairs of Cliftons. When I wear other brands for casual, knees and hips protest loudly!
I have Hoka bondi 8. Amazing shoes
Hokas are generally pretty narrow. I have normal width Asics with no issues, and hoka bondi 8s in 2E wide shoes and the hokas are way more narrow fitting and I get blisters in them near my arch/bunions, had to retire them to walking/gardening shoes.
I had the bondi 8s as my first running shoe and was a great stable intro but as soon as I replaced it with a lighter more running focused shoe it was like night and day it was like driving a buick and then driving a porsche back to back.
