I run at OPs pace too and I think I can make some sense into what he's saying. I followed the general advice to use comfortable shoes for my 20 miler and I blew up at my goal race pace, 7:05/km within 10km despite being able to run the half at 6:40/km pace with no issues. The only difference were the shoes I used. I used the Neo Vista 1 and it felt like it sucked up all my energy and my legs were dead early on. While I had no problem maintaining a faster pace with my 361 flame 2.5 lol.
I got the Neo Vista (og version) for LR with some light uptempo blocks. While the shoe is great for long run and middle foot landing, and is smooth on setting a pace and coasting on it. Y found it sloppy and harder to keep up the pace when I reach the 7:30/mile realm (about my HMP). Anything slower than that I don’t even think about the shoe, but I had to do a recent block of 5k durning my long run at 7:30/mile (4:40/km) and felt the shoe was a little bit out of its depth. As other commenter mentioned, apparently the NV2 got better at this.
I use a pair of mizuno neo vista 1’s for easy/recovery runs and I think they are great for that.
It sounds like you're looking for a 'long run cruiser', and something like the Mizuno neo vista, Puma Magmax, Asics Gel Nimbus, Nike Vomero Plus etc are the type of shoes which would be suitable. Max stack cushion but supportive even at slower paces. I have the Neo Vista 1's and Nimbus 25's and feel like I could run forever in them. I use the Vista's for longer runs I can pick up the pace in if I choose to and the Nimbus for my slower recovery runs. The Vista's have a nylon plate in them which you don't feel, so maybe more suitable for longer runs support wise, while the Nimbus are softer but I can't say how they'd feel over a marathon distance as I haven't taken them that far. But the day after I have ran in either shoe, my legs and feet feel great, so they offer a good amount of protection. Try some out at a store and see what's suitable for you. A friend of mine ran this years Manchester marathon in 5hr+ and ran it in Brooks Ghosts which people wouldn't class as a marathon shoe. But different strokes/shoes for different folks!
I bought the Neo Vista V1's for half marathon training last week for £101 instead of the usual £150 now the V2 is out and they're that cushioned I don't feel like I've been for a run the day after. Only had the time to take them for 5kms so far but they feel effortless to run in
You can get the Mizuno neo vista 1 on sale for $100. Its high cushion and nice for slower paces.
Its a good long run shoe. Wouldn't use them for faster paces however.
It just didn't feel good to me at those paces. Its a very squishy shoe and not particularly breathable. Great for long runs, but I prefer a more firm, responsive ride for faster efforts personally.
Mizuno Neo Zen 1 and Vista 1 where really fun shoes for me. No idea for stability, they have a high stackheight
Love my Vista 1’s and Zens. Will eventually pickup a pair of Vista 2’s when my second pair of the 1’s is done. I’m curious to see if anyone chimes in with thoughts on the WRP Low.
Mizuno neo vista 1.. So far the best shoes for running while traveling : Rainy slippery road, uphill.. Downhill. Jusr Bought spares for future use
Strangely i ran faster in mizuno neo vista than in EVO. Back in the days, 20 yrs ago, we just run in any shoes available for running. Today selections are much broader and confusing
