Based on 1 year's data from Mar 23, 2026 How it works
This isn’t really an answer to your question, but I’m also someone who has run in the nimbus line exclusively since the 24 because they fit me great and I’m too afraid to change. However, this year I wanted to break out of the pattern (also shooting for sub 3:30 marathon) and find a two shoe rotation with non-ASICS brands. I got the Evo SL on sale for $70 for workouts and to potentially use for the race, and it’s been great (don’t love it for slow, easy days). However, I’m most hyped on getting the Mizuno wave Sky 8 for my daily training runs (nimbus replacement) for $100. You can find it on sale now, it’s actually amazing. Feels cushiony like the nimbus but more peppy and fun. I like the Megablast recommendation, but I highly recommend the Mizuno if you wanted to add an everyday shoe on sale to eat up the majority of the miles.
I have two pairs of wave rider 28 and a wave sky 8. I like them both for different things, the rider is better for faster runs, and the sky for moderate or slower runs, even though the sky in my case is lighter. Out of curiosity, my Wave Sky are lighter than my Riders 28 by 10 grams. the wave rider 28 needed to be a bigger size because they are narrower at the front, otherwise they would hurt my fingers, the wave sky I bought a smaller size and it worked. This year when prices drop more in my country, I will buy a pair or two of wave riders 29, I can get them on Black Friday for something close to 60 dollars. much cheaper than the current price which is in the range of 120 to 150 dollars in my country.
I have the Wave Sky 8 and will vouch for those as well. A lot of people say great things about the Mizuno Neo Zen as well. I have not had a chance to try them though.
I do this as well, and my shoes look just like yours after a while. I do it less with shoes that aren't max stacked like the Wave Sky, but then those shoes aren't as comfortable for me on long runs. I basically just wear what I like and accept that I'll wear down that part of the shoe faster. Right now my long runs are in the Neo Vistas and they are holding up well, maybe due to the very pronounced rocker.
I think the Mizuno Wave Sky would be something to check out. Not super fancy and not super fast. It's highly-cushioned, but not so soft that you feel like you're running in sand.
I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the Vomero Plus. Much faster than I expected, they encourage you to move it. I’m a big guy too, 6’5”, 230. Have the Cloudboom Max on order to try and see if it’ll work for me for a half later this year. Edited add: How could I forget — the Mizuno Wave Sky 8 is excellent. You get the great bounce of the Neo Vista foam but with some additional firmer foam for control. Really helps keep things under control but still energetic, where the Neo Vista just felt too sloppy for me. Have not tried the Wave Sky 9 yet.
Didn't need to read this post, or at least it should have been asked a month ago Developed a foot issue lately, probably caused from wearing shoes that are too narrow for my semi wide feet. Was desperate to find wide-ish shoes for my upcoming marathon and settled in the Mizuno Wave Sky 8. It is a run-cation, so running it slow and don't want to pack super shoes. I didn't know about the Neo Zen. Too many models. I knew that that Neo Vista would not have been a good walking shoe for after the marathon, so ignored it. Marathon is in 4 weeks and tempted to find some Zens, but not available locally.
I too have a wide mid-foot. My thoughts on brands/models: * As a brand, Hoka would probably be my last choice. They are known for being narrow in general and even in a wide width, all the ones I've tried just don't feel right to me. * I have no personal experience with Brooks, though I know they're popular. Most of their shoes are very high drop, which I don't like, so I've always just avoided the brand. * Puma is another brand I've never even tried. To my knowledge, they don't make anything in a wide width. * Nike is another brand that I've mostly avoided becasue they didn't really offer wide width shoes for the most part. Plus they weren't exactly known for being on the wider side in the "normal" width shoes. That said, the Vomero Plus is really intriguing and is offered in Extra Wide. I'm definitely thinking about trying a pair, though the 10mm drop is a concern. * Both Asics and Saucony have been hit or miss for me. For example, I always loved the Saucony Kinvaras, but some of the other models didn't feel right. Same with Asics. I liked the Magic Speed and Magic Speed 2, but the Novablasts that everyone else seems to love were not for me. * New Balance, as a brand always gets props from me. They are the only brand I'm aware of that actually makes their racing shoe in a wide width (the SC Elite). That said, I feel like even their wide-widths are not always wide enough for me in the mid-foot area so they can be hit or miss. * I don't have a ton of experience with Mizuno, but I did have the Wave Sky 8 (I think that was it), and it was a great easy run shoe. Way too heavy for a race shoe, though and Mizuno does not make any of their faster shoes in a wide width. * Probably my favorite brand right now has got to be Adidas. IMO, they are just killing it in term of design and tech. My current racing shoes are Adizero Adios Pro 3s in a normal width. ( I do need to retire those and will probably give the Pro 4s a try.) As a brand, they tend to run wide, so I can successfully wear these even though that are not technically a wide width. I also **love, Love, LOVE** the Adizero EVO SL, even though it's also a normal width shoe. If you told me I had to stick to one shoe for the rest of my life, that would be it. Good luck!
I’m 6’3 ~210 lbs and I’ve enjoyed the Novablast 4 as a daily. Nordstrom has Mizuno Wave Sky 8s on sale right now and they’re a good shoe as well for easy days. The Clifton was okay for me starting out but couldn’t do more than 5-6 mile runs in them before they started bottoming out
2nd for the Neo Vista... 6ft and 93kg here and these are my favourite shoes I've ever worn. They're the only ones I want to pick up each time I run and I've tried SO many different trainers! To be fair I'm also loving the Wave Sky 8, not quite the same bounce as the Neo Vista, but they're almost as great and grab them for easier paces and when worried about using the NV too much!! Mizuno absolutely killing it atm
Long time fan of the Mizuno Wave Sky for long, easy runs. Have not tried the Zen or Vista yet.
I think the wave sky is a great shoe, I love Mizuno, the Neo Zen, the Neo Vista . . . I was just trying to stay within ASICS since OP has gotten along well with the brand.
