I'm 192cm and 95kg running mainly 1080 v12 but finding them totally flat after 300km which is quite to quick; I was expecting at least 500km from them. Considering to invest in Superblast 2 as the next main shoe, also I ordered Adidas Boston 12 to give a try. Not sure how v14 is better from 12 as 13 is way too soft for me as getting ankle pain
So I am 29 years old, 6’5 and weigh roughly 220-225. My last pair of running shoes are pretty much worn out and hurt to run since I started running again this spring and those were the New Balance 1080 V13s. They did a great job for the most part, but I’m not sure if that much cushion is a GOOD thing for running. My pair prior to that were the NB 1080 V12s and that model had significantly less cushion. They felt better to run in but I would think for someone my size, having more cushion would be better for the joints for less body wear and tear. I’m curious if any other large people have found a shoe that’s great for them without breaking the bank? I’m not a good runner by any means and it’s been a long winter in the northeast so I’m barely able to run a mile without stopping in these PA hills at the moment.
Thanks for the help! The 1080v15 looks really promising. My last New Balance pairs were the 1080v12 and the More v4, both went well over 1000 km and I’m still using them today. They’re sun-bleached to hell at this point, but they’ve still got plenty of life left.
Thanks for the detailed explanation! That really narrow down my opinion. I’ll probably go with the 1080v15 as my daily trainer then, it seems solid and versatile across different paces. I’ve also had a great experience with the brand: my More v4 and 1080v12 both went well over 1000 km and are still going strong. They’re sun-bleached to hell at this point, but they’ve still got plenty of life left. I'll also definitely check out the Challenger 5 and the Deviate 4.
When the temp drops and slimy leaves are out I’ve been using Nike Pegasus 39 Shield. Those claiming the Pegasus trail are good for slippy tarmac don’t know what they’re talking about. The Sole compound is different on those and designed for light gravel/ roots and is actually pretty and on wet tarmac I find (i run Pegasus trail 4 for off road). For context dry/ summer i’m using NB 1080v12
Superblast can do the long marsthon/HM miles nor problem, but so can the Megablast and it's more fun and versatile. Both are narrow though, particularly the Megablast. And Megablast will do the recovery runs a bit better than the Superblast as it is softer. Honestly it can be your only shoe (if it fits). EVO SL isn't really easy/recovery. It *can* do it, but you'll just be fighting them wanting to go faster all run. Tempo is it's natural pace. So you can use that for your faster workouts and faster long workouts. People seem to like the Nike Vomero Plus for easier workouts (but still with versatility to go faster) paired with either the EVO SL or the Megablast for faster stuff. Vomero plus also comes in an extra wide from, usually from Nike direct. But honestly your 1080s are pretty awesome for recovery and slow paced efforts. They're not bouncy like all of the above so they aren't going to lushyoutigi faster than you should and cause burnout. NB do wide and extra wide in most of their shoes if fit is an issue. And there will be some good deals on them at the moment as the v15 is about to be released (which is a bouncier version apparently so might have the same issues as above). TLDR - evo/Megablast/Superblast for faster stuff depending on fit (evo is the widest mid foot but they all narrow in the toe box I think, Megablast is the most narrow) Then if you want to stick with super trainer maybe the vomero plus as recovery? Or the magmax 2. But if you want something that won't push you when it shouldn't then either 1080s or one of the others you mentioned for recovery but the 1080s will probably be the best value right now and won't make you run too fast.
You might be better with two different shoes here. For a slow run/jog you are going to want something with a good amount of cushion/shock absorption in it, particularly at a higher weight. So something like the Nike Vomero Plus or New Balance 1080 etc. Those might do for walking too, but also you might want something a bit firmer. And for a workout in the gym you will definitely want something firmer and lower stack. So something like the NB 880 or the Nike Alpha trainer 6. Also, if you are just getting back into your fitness routine be careful with your ambition. Walking 10k a day plus running 2k a day plus some gym workouts throughout the week might be overdoing it straight out of the gate. You will need days off to recover. I am about 10lb lighter than you and started running again about 6 months ago and currently am running 5 days a week, two of which are workouts (sub threshold) and then two easy runs (30-40min hr <130) and one long run (60-90min hr<130). Beyond that I walk the dog which is like 3k a day and then I do bodyweight exercises and mobility 2-3x a week. This currently feels like a decent amount of work (which I have built up to) and I'm going to stabilise here for a month or two before adding anything extra.
I would consider the Boston 12/13. Fast trainer, stable, only ten dollars more than your Evo’s. To me a perfect half marathon shoe for non-elite runners.
After owning older models of Gel Nimbus and the 1080v’s, the Vomero Plus is my answer too. Incredible shoe for me
I have the NB Fresh foam 1080 and love the lightness, what would be an equivalent with other brands? What about for speed work ? (which I don't do much of actually!) I run 10/15 mpw. What about the Ono cloud?
