Rebel V1s were the best IMO ! I stopped buying rebels after v2
Which shoe in the adidas lineup would be good for shorter distances and tempo training? I loved my NB Fuelxell Rebel v2 as lightweight tempo shoes. Anything similar?
Rebel v5 is a miss. Trying to become daily trainer vibe to match Vomero, while wanting to be speed shoe like Evo SL. Rebel v4 was great, but a bit off. We could have ignored the flaws until Evo SL came. Rebel v1-3 was good series but yeah such a shame. Same goes for novablast. Take it with a grain of salt. You might not get good distance, opposed to what reviews are saying.
Personally I got the New Balance SC Elite V4 (also mentioned in the comments) and raced with a goal time of 3:30 in them. I had no regrets other than the fact that it costed more money. I had a blast in them and will definitely be racing in them again. Broke my goal time with a 3:28:07. Super proud of myself and happy the shoes didn't get in the way. IDK if they made me faster since I had done similar paced runs in my NB rebels but also had tib post pain from them so I opted out of racing in them which worked out for the best.
Some have been mentioned already but you can search this out too. Brands like Adidas, New Balance, and even ASICS have started taking the rods out of their race shoe and offering them as trainers. These would be shoes such as the EVO SL and even the Boston from Adidas, the Rebel from New Balance, and the MetaBlast from ASICS. They all typically come with the same foam and fit as the race shoe but without the rods or propulsion technology found in many race shoes these days. I personally owned the New Balance Rebel for most of my marathon prep as my long run shoe and then raced in the SC Elite v4 from New Balance. Felt identical fit wise and truly while running. The only difference I felt was the effort required to run faster.
Adidas EVO SL can be found on good sale in certain colors these days. Also the New Balance Rebel. I used to exclusively run in Novablasts but have been enjoying those two
My experience with carbon plated shoes has been they make multiple paces feel easier than non plated shoes. My race day shoe is the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4. I find that a 9 minute pace feels easier in them than my Asics Cumulus or my New Balance Rebel. They also make a 6:30 pace feel easier. I can’t quantify the benefit, but I can feel the plate working as I hit the ground and toe off. And that doesn’t change if I increase or decrease the pace. Everyone is different, of course and whether or not YOU find them worth it will ultimately come down to how you feel in them. But at the end of the day they’re just shoes. They aren’t some magical thing to be placed on a pedestal. They are just a tool.
Good point to specify that Speed models are really narrowed ! Training for sub3 on marathon, I've found my happiness with the Azura, like Adidas EVO SL / New Balance Rebel, it's nice to found model to run fast without a plate (carbon or nylon).
Wide foot runner. My milage is 40+ miles a week. I normally stick with new balance. I love the rebels for my daily trainer. I will say my favorite wide shoe is the Hoka Mach 6. I use those for races. I just brought the Hoka Arahi’s 8. It’s alright for the purpose I brought the shoe for.
Hoka Mach 6 NB Rebel Both of these meet your constraints. I like both of those as a nearly 6’ runner that weighs 185-ish. I also have the Evos, but they’re very squishy and not very stable. I’ve learned to like them but I do not love them personally. If you can get to a running store, try to do that.
