Hi Batchmate, I'm 85kg, 5'11 and using NB5 as daily trainers. I chose Superblast2 as my TBR shoes haha bought it yesterday and will plan to break it in tomorrow. Then will use to all my long runs para masanay yung paa ko until TBR .
I find the SC trainer too soft was well. Both the rebel and sc trainer have a soft 8.5 HA rating. If you can do soft with support, then it makes sense that the plate in the SC trainer will help. Sadly, not the case for me.
Puma trainers tend to be on the firmer side. I tried the SC trainer v2 and experienced knee pain on runs over 5k. Switched to Puma Velocity Nitro 3 and Magmax. They’ve both been great. Got over 200 miles in both. Just picked up the EVO SL and that feels good too, especially for tempo and marathon pace runs. The Adios Pro 3 is my marathon shoe, so the rocker of the EVO SL is a good training partner. I tried on the Novablast 5 and it felt more like a nice walking shoe. Far too soft. Superblast is much firmer but they didn’t have my size so never got a pair. When looking for my marathon shoe and a training companion, I went to run repeat to look at their ‘cut in half’ reviews. They provided durometer measurements. I used that as a guide, looking for shoes that had a similar one to the shoes I already had and loved (the Pumas) and removing any shoe from my list with one similar to the soft shoes I didn’t get on with.
Since June 2023 I've had three pairs of the NB SC Trainer V2s - absolute tank of a shoe with 500 miles on each of the first two. However, in the last six months I started using an old race pair of the Elite V4s - I've now got 350 miles on these but the outsole was getting wrecked (shoe goo has lasted longer than the rubber). Bought another pair a couple of weeks ago, and it's like putting on an old pair of comfortable slippers. Still did a tempo run in the old pair this week though. You can run at any pace in them, they eat the miles up, amazing cushion, and legs are always fully recovered. I've tried using my Rebels and Evo SLs but, for me, they are great up to 10 miles or so.
SC Trainer v2 daily is fine for some people but the carbon/stiff plate does add fatigue over time. If you want something plusher that can also race a marathon, look at the Glycerin 21 or Nimbus 26. Both hold up well for long efforts.
I’m 6’2” and 84kg. I had the NB4 (upgraded to Superblast2 after 1300km). From everything I’ve read, the NB5 had a significant downgrade in durability compared to the NB4.
It's a generalisation, but when running at slower paces, a runner typically won't create the downward force to 'load' the plate adequately to rebound upwardly and give you much benefit. Maybe a plated trainer like the New Balance SC Trainer V2 could work better, as it'll give much more durability than a pure carbon race shoe, which can wear down very quickly and be a waste of money.
Wide foot girlie here. I run in both the rebels v4 and the SuperComp v2. Haven’t tried the latest models. Love the rebels but I would not recommend them for half marathon distance, there’s not enough cushion for that long of time on feet. Supercomp trainer has been a really good long run shoe. It took me a few long runs before this shoe grew on me and I acclimated to it though. I usually like more drop. I think the trainer would be a great shoe to try in wide; however, I have heard mixed things about how wide the toe box is. Some have said too wide, and others said not wide enough compared to v2. You’ll have to try it on to decide for yourself.
New balance sc trainer 3 hands down
Agree, sc trainers are not good at all. Way too stiff, foam is boring. Hugely overpriced
Go to your local running store and try on some pairs. I really like the Adidas EVO SL($150), ASICS Superblast 2 ($200), New Balance SC Trainer (forget how much but these are carbon plated so a bit more$$). My heaviest use is the Superblasts and EVO SLs. Trying to get my hands on the ASICS Megablasts
