Started running at 250 lbs, 5’10”. Got about 600 miles on my Pegasus 38s. Bought another pair of 41s. Currently alternating between zoom fly 6 and Vomero 18. Gotta say that for the money the Pegs are very tough to beat- great comfort, performance, and they’re not $300 supershoes that you’ll be hesitant to take out in the rain. I’m a Nike nerd though- I Want to try some Superblasts and some Pumas at some point. Edit- I’ve also had some of the older New Balance runners and they were both comfortable and durable as hell, almost bomb proof. The plus for NB is you can find odd sizes and widths pretty easy, if you happen to have wide, narrow, large, or small feet.

5’11 190. Vomeros and Novablasts each got like 400-500 miles, good for easy and recovery. Invincible 3s got 650 miles. I’m on the Zoomfly6 for tempo and the Deviate nitro elite3 for tempo and race day. I don’t expect many miles out of those two. Also just ordered a replacement easy shoe, the Pegasus Plus. I had two pairs of Pegs, the 41 and 38, and they were workhorses. Easily got 600 miles out of each pair.

I skew towards Nike (90s kid) and went from 250lb to 190lb with running, weight training, and diet modifications. Did the bulk of that with Pegasus 38 and Pegasus 41. Super cheap when you can find on sale, good for every kind of run until you start buying specialized shoes (tempo/pace, long run, race day, etc). Recently picked up a pair of ASICS Novablast 5 and am pretty happy, though you might try them to see if they feel squishy to you. I use them for med/long runs and easy pace, but I did do some sprints in them and they did reasonably well. If you have good health insurance it might be worthwhile to see a sports doctor. They can analyze your gait and tell you if you pronate/supinate, are a heel/mid/front foot striker, have flat feet, duck walk, etc. this information can quickly narrow down your selection and prevent injuries.

My first pair of dedicated running shoes were clearance Pegasus, think they were like $75? Thought I’d treat my self and bought some volmeros. Going back to Pegasus when the Vs have had their time.

r/Marathon_TrainingDo I really need two pairs of shoes for marathon training?

For the last 3500 miles, I have run in only 1 pair of shoes at a time (including races) - 1000 on Pegasus 38s, retired - 1000 on Pegasus 38s, retired - 1000 on Pegasus 39s, retired - 500 on Pegasus 39s (any guesses on when I’ll retire them?) The theory is different shoes put different stress on different parts of your feet and help with injury prevention. Up to you on what ever works best for you, just be mindful, some people have found success having a shoe rotation. Given you’ve already run a marathon, I wouldn’t consider you new to this, and you likely know what works for you.

I did my first 50k in a pair of Nike Pegasus 38 with probably 400 miles on them. Probably not ideal but if you’re not having any problems with the shoe I don’t see why not. I think people get too caught up in “bigger stack means better” just my opinion.

I have the same colour Peg 38 and was a very difficult purchase financially! But i love it. I’m always worried about wearing them out so i use them sparingly. Any idea how durable the shoe is? What should i take care of? Also, I’ve done 5k runs frequently and tips on running more seriously and for longer durations? How do i reach my first 10k?

The shoes are narrow and often don’t feel comfortable for me. I moved away from them after the Pegasus model from ‘21 felt like they were aggravating my plantar fasciitis.

I ran the Pegasus 38 and they were nice and boring. Currently using the ride 17 and it’s pretty boring too. I also usually get 500 miles out of it

If u have a marketplace id look for almost new after you decide on a brand and model. Ive bought most of my shoes used for a run then they saw they don’t quite fit and sold them online. If u don’t have this option yeah, look for 1 model older like a pegasus, the current model is 41, u can find on some websites the 40 or 39 for a discount. I wouldn’t go for something like 38 since the foam even if not used will loose its properties.

I loved them until the 38, which even brand new had far less cushioning that the 36 that I’d run 400 miles in, so haven’t been back since!

For context I am a lighter runner ~60kg with normal width feet, I run around 55k/week (would want my shoes to last few months) budget is tight ~$120 Looking for one pair of shoes that I can use for all kinds of training from intervals to long runs. I am a midfoot striker, and I think that training shoes should be weighing more than your starters. I like when my shoes feel responsive but still being soft and comfortable. For now I have ran in for training: Nike Pegs Shield 38, feel good although I feel some of their bounce is gone, and for some sessions I feel weird hot feeling around toes. For races I run in brooks Hyperion max 2 and they do me right, so not looking for any changes anytime soon. Thanks for your insight

Surely this depends on foot type and gait. Some ASICS models have softer midsoles which, for certain runners, can encourage supination and lead to knee issues. In those cases, a flatter, more neutral shoe like the Pegasus could be better. Not trying to be controversial or pedantic, but I do think there isn’t a single shoe that works for everyone. (For transparency I have both ASICS Novablast 5 and Nike Pegasus 38).
