https://valetudo.cloud/pages/general/supported-robots.html This is one of the best ways to get full local control of robot vacuums. I would keep to ones from this list. I have only ever owned one of these, the Dreame L10 Pro. Its pretty good for sweeping up dust and small stuff. I run it daily and its bin is nearly full after about a week or two. Its not great for mopping or picking up large items. I have fully tiled floors.
It depends on your needs… I wanted Valetudo and personally I like compact vacuum cleaners and I don’t need/like any mopping so my go to model is the Dreame L10 Pro
I had my Dreame L10 Pro brick itself on a firmware update well outside of warranty period. So i've gone the opposite to you and very recently (two days ago) picked up a refurbished X5 Pro Omni for a few hundred bucks. I liked my Dreame overall. it was pretty intentional with navigation and the front side obstacle avoidance was pretty great. I've found the ecovacs having it's lidar lower down as been better for my house as the dreame lidar tends to be above my skirting boards, which means it was sometimes confused about where the wall is in space - bumping in to it before getting itself lined up. It's fairly quiet as well. Having it brick itself has left a sour taste and hence my move to consider anyone but Dreame. The ecovacs app is similarly functional, maybe a bit better with the AI features. Bot overall it does seem a bit less mature. The app is not as polished. the mechanical sounds are a bit more course. It's general navigation is a bit relaxed in some cases, taking shortcuts around odd edges. In other instances it would put it's square side right into a corner or back the extended mop into a corner which is good. I'm happy with the ecovacs value, If I were going the other way, I imagine I would like the equivalent X8 Omni from Dreame as well. A bit expensive, but Dreame seems a little bit ore polished in every way - seems they know it and make you pay for it (In Australia at least)
I went from l10 pro to l40 ultra in last two weeks. Specifically that model since it can run Valetudo. The difference is astounding: * Mopping is actually worth using, floors have never been shinier. * Auto empty dock is goated, works really well * Navigation is MUCH improved. I no longer prepare the place for vacuuming. It's gotten stuck a grand total of one time and it always because of a small area rug which has curled at the edges. * Much quieter at similar power settings * Mapping capability seems far more accurate - carpet detection is incredible. It found the outline of our cowhide rug, and never accidentally mops that. I got a screaming deal though, paid $550 for the l40 ultra. I'd say do it, refurbish your l10, and give it to a friend.
Seconded for the Dreame bots + Valetudo. I’ve got an L10 Pro that is adorable and 100% locally controlled.
My journey so far: 2019 Roborock S5 or S6 2021 Dreame L10 Pro (moved to new apartment and gave Roborock to my roommate) 2025 Roborock Saros 10R Didn’t have any issue with any of them (although just recently bought Saros). Old Roborock is still working my fine in my friend’s apartment. Roborock and Dreame were considered solid, but now there are new companies like Eufy, Nawal or Mova. Cant say much about them. Didn’t have a need to buy replacement big parts, only filters, brushes and other things that require replacement from time to time. They are very cheap. You need to clean robot from time to time and empty dust bins. If it has a dedicated water compartment and you use it for moping, you will need to refill it and empty dirty water compartment (I do it every day, takes 2 minutes).
