Check out the [Exped Megamat Max](https://www.expedusa.com/products/megamat-max). It’s very comfortable and durable, with a functionally equivalent R value (not that you should put much stock in them due to the vagaries and inconsistencies of how they’re calculated—you should believe what your own body feels) as the one you linked. They also make a [Duo version](https://www.exped.com/en/products/sleeping-mats/megamat-max-duo-15) but I don’t recommend due to how unwieldy it is to roll up. They are bulky and spendy, but so very comfortable! If you’re feeling decadent, get 2 of the 30” version to make a queen bed; although there would be a seam/gap between you, the motion of the other person isn’t transferred to you, but you could hold them together with a fitted queen sheet. I even take mine winter backpacking sometimes, putting it on top of my pulk, and in the off season it makes a great spare bed for when you have overnight guests at home. Recommend you also grab a [Flextail pump](https://www.flextail.com/products/tiny-pump-2x) or similar, both for convenience and so you don’t have to use your breath or wonky stuff sacks to inflate your pad; this prevents any possible mildew inside the pad, and, by using ambient air, means the pad won’t deflate a bit from cooling/shrinking as it would if you filled it with warm air. I also use [something like this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PPWJSYW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) on the floor of the tent, they’re very light, easy to clean, and offer an extra bit of insulation and thermal break. Those are sold out but I bet AliExpress has something similar. Sounds like you’ve got it dialed in but I also want to plug down booties (Feathered Friends, Western Mountaineering, and 40 Below all make great versions, depending on your preferences), handwarmers (including experimenting with butane versions to see what works for her), just the right gloves (try Dachstein boiled wool mittens, Outdoor Research Alti mittens, or even fur mittens), and above all (assuming you are car camping and don’t have to carry all this) an electric blanket you run off a Jackery or similar. You don’t have to run it all night, just until things get warmed up and your body heat can keep up. It’s funny how people are, I regularly complain the Cascades don’t get cold enough haha! Hope she stays warm and you make some good memories!

Megamat Max 15 The other Megamats are also top-of-class, but there are cheaper alternatives from a variety of brands. For an actually-backpackable car camping pad, Thermarest's new NeoLoft looks to be amazing but very expensive

Have a Megamat Max 15, it is without a doubt the most comfortable sleeping mat I’ve ever used and better than many hotel beds I’ve slept on. Also, don’t worry about buying the electric pump, it self inflates and needs a dozen or so pumps from the hand pump to be inflated.

Exped MegaMat Duo 15. You’re losing 8” of width vs a queen bed but it’s the most comfortable sleeping pad you can buy. Alternatively, if you absolutely need the extra 8” buy two MegaMat 15 LXWs and put them together. You’ll have 61” of width.

I have two Megamat 15 Duos. . If I could buy it again I would. I used the REI coupin two years in row. It’s almost $800 in just inflatable pads. Would have been a grand without the coupon. Both have gone in for repairs after just 1 week’s use of car camping. One each of the two years I live used them. Getting them back in the storage sack is nearly impossible. There’s other brands now. Look into those.

But it. But don't pay retail. Only fools pay MSRP. Exped more than likely will go on sale for Labor Day. We will have another deal megathread. Best sales for Exped were for Memorial Day with 30% off in the channel + 6-10% at cashback sites like Activejunky or TopCashback. The nice thing about the queen one is you can use standard shallow depth mattress protectors and fitted sheets. Otherwise you are stuck buying the overpriced proprietary sized ones from Exped. I have the Duo 15 MegaMat LXW. Wish they sold it in queen size. The extra 5cm of depth is awesome.

Exped MegaMat 15 Max. It's like sleeping on a bed at home. Or if you really want to baller out buy a 30" wide cot like the Helinox Cot Max and put the Exped pad on top of it. Then get a down quilt from Hammock Gear, ZenBivy, Enlightened Equipment or Paria Outdoor Products.

Echoing most people here, Exped! This year we bought the big one for my wife and I (Megamat Max Duo), and two Megamats for the kids. I know you're a back sleeper but the Max is awesome for both side/back sleeping. Spend some time getting the air pressure just right after initial setup, it's worth it. Our max duo takes up a LOT of space in the SUV, but the sleep is worth it. Since you have a trailer, if money isn't an object just go with a real mattress, like a Sealy posturpedic plus hybrid in firm. You're not going to sleep better on something less.

I won't talk you out of it... My partner and I between us have 5 Expeds. 2x Megamats LXW for car camping, 2x Megamat M for a camping trailer we recently bought and a Megamat Queen that was used during moving and now is there as a guest bed. I'm now considering swapping my LXW for a Megamat Max. I got the Queen for a really good price from Bob Leisure (seems like a sketchy website, but totally legit).

I switched from an [Exped Megamat Max](https://www.rei.com/product/244272/exped-megamat-max-sleeping-pad-long-x-wide) to a [Zempire Monstabed](https://www.rei.com/product/241305/zempire-monstabed-single-air-bed). You'd need the space in your tent for the taller bed, but it's incredible for sleeping, and is nice for getting in and out of bed, too. It packs smaller than the Megamat Max, but I'm not sure how ideal it is for backpacking unless good sleep is worth the weight. IMO it is the single best car camping option, though! I'm also a side sleeper and I finally have a place for my hips to go. It has two independent air cavities which I like from a redundancy perspective. The 12" bottom does most of the heavy lifting (I fill it to hard as a board then let air out for a quarter second) then the 4" foam can be separately adjusted for more or less cushion.

Yeah so far I've been comfortable with the build quality! I have the duo/twin version because it's usually me and at least a dog, and it has withstood (trimmed) dog nails with ease. I do make a point of never laying on it with clothing that has zippers, but I do the same with my Exped. The bottom is a much thicker material than the sides and top. It ships with a patch kit which looks perfect for small punctures, but I don't think the patches are enough for a tear. I do use a footprint and my newest tent has a heavy-duty tarp bottom though so I don't know that I've exposed the mat to any real risk.

Megamat Max or Dometic Highrise 15. Like someone else said, you can buy two and place next to each other for maximum width. I purchased a cot from Helinox and still placed a mattress pad on top, but in my opinion, the two mattress I mentioned are much more comfortable.

Don’t buy that one. Buy the megamat max. 1000x better. Also are you planning on sleeping on it alone or with a partner? If you are planning on sharing it I would 100% recommend two skinnier maxes instead. Megamats transfer a ton of motion, and if one person is heavier than the other the experience can be greatly diminished for the lighter person as the mattress will feel significantly harder for them. Looking at your $500 price tag you were probably thinking the max anyway, which is the right choice even if you don’t say max. Buy the purple one 100%.

We've been doing more car camping and less backpacking as we get older... the last few trips we had one of the really tall air mattresses. I love the height of them, how you can sit on the edge of the bed and put your socks on...and they're actually pretty comfy... BUT. They do lose air over a few days and if you have a super Floppy Spouse like I do, then it's like being on one of those giant water pillow things at the lake when you're sleeping at night. Especially if Floppy Spouse has to pee every thirty minutes at night like mine does. I just got the Exped Megamax 15 based on extensive research. It's spendy but... I'm old. I didn't love going back down to ground level, but I figure with a stand-up tent it's not so bad, and the tradeoff with comfort and not being disturbed by Floppy Spouse was worth it. I got it a few days ago, blew it up at the house and made Floppy Spouse come over and Flop away... it is REALLY comfortable. We will be trying it out this weekend for the first time but initial impression is that it's money well spent.

Do you want to snuggle? What you want is the Duo, a bottom sheet, and an EE Accomplice quilt. I went down this road. It changed everything. The only downside, at all, is that my kids got jealous of our Megamat so we had to get them their own singles. Now everyone sleeps WELL.

As others have said, an exped megamat duo is probably the best option out there but it's pricey. There's a few from other brands that are a similar design (soft top, filled with foam so labeled as self inflating, etc.). Alternatives would be Nemo Roamer, Sea-To-Summit Comfort Deluxe, REI Camp Dreamer, MEC Reactor. The foam filling and soft top make them way more comfortable than the massive intex matresses or the one you have posted even though they are significantly thinner.

I have both, the queen is not that bigger unless you really put effort into rolling both up tight. I flew with the queen in a checked duffle bag for camping - was debating flying with just the twin and it didn’t save enough space. (Being that the other person would pack a backpacking sleeping pad. The queen is larger but smaller than a twin +backpacking pad).

Lot of good replies here already. If you're car camping, Id recommend a exped megamat duo and two Teton sleeping bags. They make a very good low temp bag, and they're big. Buy a left and right for you and her and they will zip together too! Much better than a mummy or sleeping bag. Warming water bottles by the fire is a game changer too. Stay warm while you sleep. Probably the only thing that really matters when camping in low temps. If you can't warm you'll be miserable. As an aside, blankets under your pad don't do a whole lot because the insulation comes from the air in the blanket. When you lie on top of it you compress the insulation. It's better than nothing, but it's a pretty compromised experience.

As someone who has done many a music fest with air mattresses, the megamat duo is far better. It's just a bigger sleeping pad that's super comfortable and has a great r value. Worth the price. Great for two people car camping. I will never go back to air mattresses after getting the megamat duo. Heck, we just flew it with it out to Utah for a camping trip instead of taking our smaller backpacking pads. Definitely worth it.

I bought the Mega Mat Duo first, after testing the single at REI. We use it when camping in our car. Better than my bed at home, at an 1/8 the price. The lady is happy, it works. I rarely tent camp because it’s uncomfortable. We tried camp cots and all kinds of pads. The lastest 25” pads are getting better for backpacking. But the best is hammock camping in the backcountry, I have to set an alarm! I love camping so I don’t mind spending money on gear. A few weeks ago, I went to a motorcycle event out in Ohio. We tent camped. I couldn’t lug the Mega Mat Duo on the plane so I bought a single on sale. $145.00. Slept great. Cheaper than 1 night in a Hotel. Final Answer: Honestly, if I could just have one, and it couldn’t be a hammock. I would buy the Exped Mega Mat Auto. More shoulder room for my lady and I in the car. It fits in my car. Checks all the boxes. Definitely get bamboo sheets. A double quilt. A couple a Nitcore Nef10 fans. Bugnets, and sun screens for all the car windows. And a Luno Life Cargo Hammock to watch movies and store stuff while you’re sleeping.

We went to a Exped megamat duo when we gave up the air mattress. Tried it out on the tile floor and we slept great! Only draw back is if one of you doesn’t like “crawling” up off the floor. We ended up getting two cots because my husband was that one. I couldn’t find a single cot wide enough for the entire mat, 53” I believe. We don’t have any issue with them sliding apart. I lay a think comforter on it so as not to damage the Exped. If you’re good without the extra 18-24” a nice queen air mattress may give you this Exped is the way to go. Definitely worth the $$$.

This doesn’t help you decide, but related story… Bought a megamat duo—it was a huge expense for my husband and I at the time but camp a lot and wanted to be comfortable. We brought it home and inflated it in our bedroom to try it out. We had a dinner shortly after, so we propped it up against the wall, closed the door and left. We came home 2 hours later to a completely deflated Exped with a zillion pinprick holes in it. Turns out our a**hole cat had somehow broken into the bedroom and used it as a scratch pad. I wanted to cry. We pulled a Hail Mary and contacted the company, fully expecting them to brush us off… but they offered to repair it for free if we shipped it to them. They did, patched all 98 holes, and even sent us a free pillow and super sweet note out of pity. I love the company and always will for that.

For double sleepers, two brands stand out: • Exped MegaMat Duo: Incredibly comfortable and well-insulated. It's like bringing your bed to the campsite. The downside? It's bulky when packed. • Nemo Roamer Double: Nearly as plush as the Exped, but packs down to about half the size. This is our go-to for family trips where space is at a premium. Both options are on the pricier side, but the comfort is worth it. They turn tent camping into glamping without much extra effort. Pro tip: If you're camping where you can drive up to your site and you're open to sleeping as two singles instead of a double, consider pairing your pad with a lightweight cot. It elevates you off the ground, making it easier to get in and out of bed (your back will thank you).

I have it and it is awesome. The only reason to not buy it is the dimensions of it. Not all cars can fit that thing. Most wheel wells of cars are 40 inch apart only. Megamat Duo is around 50+ inches. Trucks can fit it though. Other than that, the bed is so comfortable my wife approves of it. And she is TERRIBLY PICKY when it comes to beds.

They take some effort to deflate and roll up to a reasonable size. I can see how smaller folks can struggle with that. Maybe that?

Hah, I have to place my Duo in the middle of my trunk and then kind of pack around it. Packability is great - I bring queen-sized pillows and just throw them in the back seat because they don't fit anywhere else, but I have that space.

I know you don’t want an expensive bed but my husband and I absolutely love our Exped Meg Mat Duo. It’s never lost air on us, we don’t wake each other up when the other moves, easy to inflate, memory foam makes my very fussy back feel great. I have a hard time sleeping when camping usually until we bought that mat. When we were remodeling our master bath we slept on that thing for 5 months…it’s the best camping mattress I’ve ver owned in the 30 years I’ve owned camping mattresses.

Exped Mega Mats. Pricey, but worth it. REI has a similar one that some speak highly of, but never tried it.

I don't think any of them have real memory foam. It doesn't compact as much, etc. I have used Thermarest and REIs. But the best IMHO is the Exped Mega Mat. Not cheap but well worth it since you want non backpacking size.

I've used Thermarest, REI house brand, and Exped. All have worked great and I'd recommend any of them; they've all been super reliable. For pure lux comfort though, the Exped Mega Mat rules that particular roost.

Exped Mega Mats. I bristled at all the hype about them until I got one. I liked it so much I got one to replace a mattress in the apartment, since it works especially well when my back issues flare up. Cots alone are not that comfortable, and are considerably cold. So most use a mat on top of one much of the time.

when I’m at home I like a thin wool pad on the ground, I love an extra firm sleeping surface. the exped mega mat is nice. You can inflate it quite hard. Unfortunately it deflates through the night so it doesn’t stay as firm

2x megamats with a coupler is the luxury option.  2 pads are more comfortable than 1 because you can properly adjust the inflation of each to match its occupant and one person moving doesn't upset the other's sleep.

Been sleeping on an Exped Mega Mat and a cot for 3+ months, and an Exped on top of an overly soft mattress for a year before that. I have lower back issues, and this has been one of the best mattresses I have slept on in years.

I find the cot/Exped combo more comfortable/supportive than the Exped/mattress, so it seems to help in that regard. Possibly just better firmness match for me. I have used the Exped on the floor or in back of a car a handful of times, but didn’t notice a big difference between that or the cot (as far as I remember).

If you want something that’s still somewhat portable and packs down a bit exped mega mats are genuinely great. We went through 3 air mattresses in as many years. Got these and never had a leak in 3 years now and I sleep through the night. If your strictly car camping and don’t mind more bulk I’ve heard the Hest systems are unbelievably comfortable like taking a nice comfy hotel bed camping with you. Good luck!

Fellow Edmontonian here! You can't go wrong with an exped for your sleeping mat. My wife and I are avid backpackers, and have used a double wide exped for numerous years with zero issue. We also share a double sleeping bag from big agnes, but upgraded to a quilt from Enlightened Equipment this year (haven't gotten out yet to test it however). Which trails are you hiking in Jasper and Banff? When during the season are you going? Altitude and time will also have an impact on the warmth rating you choose.

The Nemo Roamer, if it’s not sold out, is the best car camping pad. I’ve had that and the megamat and the Nemo is much better than the megamat in every way. Plus it’s a smaller company with a zero questions asked warranty. On a different Nemo pad that I tore on a sharp rock I was out in the middle of nowhere Wyoming they said I had 2 options. They’ll send me a new pad free of charge to any address or they located the closest Nemo dealer and to purchase the same pad (they had already made sure it was in stock too) and send them the receipt and I would be reimbursed.

The MegaMat is just a self-inflating mattress. It’s filled with foam, so when you release the compression straps and open the “in” valve, the foam expands which draws in air. Most camping self-inflating mattress are cored out, they have channels or holes cut through the foam to reduce bulk and so they pack down smaller. If you puncture one, it’s not a disaster like an air bed. Your body weight pushes air out but the foam is constantly trying to draw air back in. Any decent camping shop will sell self- inflating mattresses. I have a Zempire one.

I have limited experience since we only started camping last year but I cannot recommend enough the Exped Megamat camping mattress. We used the Exped Megamat Auto mattress since we were sleeping in the car and it’s got the tapered sides for the wheel arches but the normal Megamat would be ideal for your situation. Great for side and back sleeping. It can be super firm or you can let out some air and adjust it to your preference. Definitely worth considering if funds allow 👍 Will be taking our dog on a car camping road trip this year so will soon find out how dog proof they are! We’ve got a couple videos showing the mattress set up and in use. Edit - don’t listen to me, others have provided much better solutions 🫡

Might still be worthwhile for grip but realistically, putting an 1/8" pad underneath you air mattress will not protect it from anything that would otherwise cause a puncture. Anything sharp enough to actually puncture an air mattress (sharp rock points, stick ends/etc) will poke right through that 1/8" foam without any trouble. This has happened to me once in \~50 Sierra nights from a small sharp rock end stick out that was embedded into the ground (impossible to see beforehand), it went right through both my tyvek groundsheet and DCF tent floor. I think the only true ground protection would be a thicker CCF like z-lite or megamat (which is what I use now), and I also prefer this since they double as camp sit pad/yoga mat/nap mat/etc.
