Thinner denier than the Xlite (20D vs. 30D) and occasional failures in the baffle welds are the downsides. They’re more comfortable and the dual values are better (in my opinion).
Exped Ultra is comfortable and ultralight. Pretty affordable, too. Give it a try.
I personally wouldn’t get a double pad but I’m 5ft 130 lbs and my husband is 6ft 225lbs so it is WILDLY uncomfortable when we are on a double pad. However if you’re the same size then maybe it wouldn’t be too bad. I did just buy the Exped 6.5R (single) and I LOVE it.
Yeah it’s definitely not crinkly. I really love mine! And apparently as stated above the double Exped pads might be comfortable has a double pad! I might have to look into that for my husband and I.
Just got the new Exped Ultra 6.5R (it’s on sale until March 9 for $150) and I LOVE it so far. It seems like it’s going to be so comfortable. I got the medium wide mummy and it is 15 ounces. It $50 off right now which is more than 20% off.
I bought the Wide Mummy of the 6.5R. I don't find its vertical baffles comfortable, so returned it (that's a personal thing). I can't speak to warmth, but the whole industry R value thing doesn't take in to account the air infiltration at the side of the mattress. Personally, I'd like to see a return to 1" self-inflating mats with an R2.5... as warm as a 3.5-4" pad with double the R value, easier to use, don't need to be as wide (you're not as high off the ground), simpler to inflate, can be made more durable. Here's a couple views of the Exped's insulation from my mat: [https://imgur.com/a/E8qUfzA](https://imgur.com/a/E8qUfzA) and here: [https://imgur.com/FVq9hoG](https://imgur.com/FVq9hoG)
I went from a Nemo Tensor to the [Exped Ultra](https://www.expedusa.com/products/ultra-6-5r-mummy?variant=47399159922905) and love it. I'm, 6'4 and use a medium wide and have my feet hang off a bit, the LW might be better for you. Big fan of the mummy style vs rectangle.
New Exped Ultra 6.5R and 8R have added the Mylar layer, but layer it between the insulation not next to the face fabric.
Only the 6.5R - I use a 25F bag not a quilt and was comfy, but temps only got down to 30F
Or one of the new Exped 6.5 Mummy pads which are even lighter than the Xlite now, except for the Short.
Yes, I’d be skeptical of it too. But even if it’s actually a 3R pad, I think it would work for most people’s conditions. I use an XLite. But have a friend who uses the previous gen 3R mummy from Exped. It’s a more extreme taper. But if you’re already used to mummy pads, I don’t think it’s much of an adjustment from when I’ve tried it out.
I've only been able to use it one night so far and haven't been able to use it in sub-zero temps yet so can't really compare to the pads I have. I do find it more comfortable than my Nemo Tensor All-Season and Tensor Elite, but not quite as comfortable as my old Sea to Summit. I'm more of a back sleeper, so take that as you will.
The x-therm is quite a bit of overkill for 30° F, even for a cold sleeper. I think the Ether Light would run pretty cold for me at 30°. Are you finding those particular ones on sale? Cuz I think you should be looking at something like NeoAir XLite NXT or Nemo Tensor All Seasons. The Tensor is about the same weight, but a half inch thicker and somewhat warmer. Either would be fine in those temps, but the Tensor would give you a bit more cushion. The Exped Ultra 6.5R is a little bit cheaper than those two very popular ones, and compares very well in specs. My comfort favorite is the Zen Bivy Flex Air. The stretch top is super nice. It's about 4-6 oz heavier than the others.
