Am I the only one who thinks the exped is completely over rated? When I saw it for the first time I was stoked, and used it in my tent, but it’s an air mattress. Super springy, and not very comportable. For the the hest foamy is the closest thing to an actual comfortable camp mattress, and I’m surprised exped and the rest don’t have anything comparable. I’ve got the 3.0 DLX coming and I’m curious if the higher tier mattress will compare. I may end up returning the hest if so. But if it’s really just another air mattress I probably won’t be impressed.
I have the foamy. I am a big fan! I think the strengths of the exped come down to packable/storable size, whereas the foamy’s strengths are durability and comfort
I am 57 and sleep on a HEST foamy camping mattress and HEST medium camp pillow. Both are more comfortable than what I sleep on at home! REI has them you can roll out and test, and they go on sale regularly.
90 nights per year, here. 2 years ago I had to replace my Exped Mega Mat that I'd used for 4 years camping in a RTT and truck bed. It required lots of repairs. I bought a pair of Hest Foamy mats and have used them for over 100 nights so far. They look brand new and it turns out the Hest pillow is awesome as well! So, I'm an Exped Mega Mat contrarian.
I've had both. I've used them in 2 iKamper RTTs and in a Taxa Tigermoth trailer. When I first got the Exped I was blown away with the comfort (I'm heavy and a side sleeper) and I sang its praises far and wide. After a few years they developed air leaks and I repaired them. Apparently I did a sloppy job, so I had to repair the repairs. I finally gave up and got a deal on a pair of Hest Foamys 2 years ago. They're completely different "technology" and designs. To me, the Hest material is much more "hole resistant". We've used the Hest mattresses for over a year now, probably 90 nights, and the Hest is a no-brainer for my abusive use case!
I have both. I love them both. I find myself being more careful with the hest and it’s much bigger when packing the car. I’d say the sleep is pretty similar. Warm, comfy and easy to set up. I got both of them lightly used so cheap. We take both camping and my daughter and I swap every trip. I have a narrow hest so the wide would be a major upgrade. Grab whatever you can find for cheap!
go try a Hest Foamy at REI if you can. They have a 25x64 and 25x78, neither is exactly what you need but worth looking at. I‘d think trimming 3 inches from the longer one wouldn’t be too hard.
We've been using hest foamy pads for two years now. We dont camp in hot (overnight highs above the 70s) areas. We visit those places when its cooler. At those temps a sheet or light blanket is fine. We do camp in winter (below freezing) conditions. So far the lowest we've encountered with them has been the upper 20s. With fleece sheets, down quilts, and a wind & water resistant synthetic insulated shell (as needed), its been comfy. The hest does firm up slightly when cooler, but my body heat (which my bedding traps) softens the foam sufficiently. I broke my back years ago, and this is the best sleep I've gotten camping. I've taken regular memory foam pillows camping that have gotten rock hard in cold temps, so I'm not sure what material hest is using to minimize the hardening. It could just be the heat retention by my blankets. For me, 100% worth it. They are bulky.
If you're willing to pay the price Hest makes some exceptional foam camping mattresses with durable, washable covers that let you roll them up relatively well. No queen size but you can get some of their larger single person mattresses and connect them with the integrated low profile clips to make a queen size mattress.
They are not cheap but we just invested in some [Hest](https://hest.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoodw8nMC_CtKmcVt_rzdwjW2uhotg--c8TyvKKmeS3CQnV5mOsS) 'foamy' mattress for car camping and they have been fantastic. The closest thing to sleeping on my foam mattress at home I've ever come with camping. They're well built, well designed, and come in a couple of different sizes. They can also clip together and once properly set up I haven't even been able to feel the seam between them. The best unexpected benefit has been because they're foam they don't transfer movement like an air mattress would so if someone has to get up in the middle of the night they're less likely to disturb their sleeping partner.
