I love my Thermarest neo topo air xl, but have recently picked up a KilosGear Aerocloud elite and it might be my new backpacking mat. More comfortable for side sleeping than even my thermarest.
A little cheaper, but very comfortable for a side sleeper on the larger side. https://kilosgear.com/products/aerocloud-sleeping-pad-elite
This is why I've switched to Kilos elite pads after wasting decades and £££s on Nemo, Thermarest, etc. Kilos pads are at least 1/2 the price of the 'premium', but still unreliable, pads and easily the comfiest I've ever used. They look similar to the S2S Ether lites (which started leaking after 3 nights) but are way comfier for some reason.
Nemo Tensor, Kilos Gear AeroCloud Elite, Big Agnes Rapide SL, Thermarest NeoLoft. The Sea To Summit Etherlight XT is also comfortable but heavy and bulky for a backpacking pad.
I got my wife the Kilos Gear Aerocloud Elite, and another female friend of ours also borrowed it. It's equivalent to a regular/wide pad from Nemo, Thermarest, Big Agnes, etc. They both said it was significantly more comfortable than our Nemo Tensor which I think is considerably better than my older Thermarest NeoAir XLite. My wife has a double spinal fusion and says that the Kilos Gear still isn't perfect but then again she struggles even at home . Unfortunately Kilos Gear isn't sold at REI
Car camping or backpacking? I'm a backpacker, and I really like the Nemo Tensor All Season. Get it in wide. My wife now has the Kilos Gear Aerocloud Elite and it's also a fantastic pad. She said it's the most comfortable pad we've tried so far (haven't tried the Thermarest NeoLoft). The Big Agnes Rapide SL also gets high marks. The Thermarest NeoLoft is supposed to be the bomb, but it's a bit on the heavy side for backpacking. Most of these except for the Kilos Gear can probably be found at REI, and they usually have a "test model" on the floor that you can put down and lie on to see how they feel. Yes, some of these are very expensive. Wait for them to go on sale, either during the Black Friday / Cyber Monday sales in November, or during the big sale that happens in the Spring.
Check out Kilos Gear’s Aerocloud Elite and Flextail Zero R05. They aren’t super duper cheap, but they punch way above their weight. I would even say they’re more comfortable than the most expensive options from Nemo or Big Agnes at half the price. Your sleeping pad and sleeping bag/quilt are going to dictate how good a time you are going to have (if you need a reason to justify spending a little bit more). I personally have the Kilos Gear Aerocloud Elite and I think it is incredibly underrated. And, while I’m always looking at other gear, I can’t find any reason to “upgrade” or buy anything else. It’s amazingly comfortable and well insulated, it has the “alternating quilted” baffle pattern, which is superior to any tubular pattern for warmth and stability in my experience, and they regularly have sales on their website (black Friday’s coming!). If you want to be absolutely miserable, go with Klymit. I had one about 5 years ago and couldn’t look at it without it springing a leak. It was super inadequate for side sleepers as well. I have zero experience with Ampex, other than the fact that it used to be a recording equipment/tape manufacturer before someone in China thought the name sounded good. Also- anecdotally, I’ve never had much luck with any brand that thinks it’s clever to replace a “c” with a “k” in their name. Silly, I know- but in my 56 years, way more often than not, that has been the case! Superstitious? Maybe- but you have to put a lot of faith in these air pads.
I'm late to this but I have their Elite pad in the long version. It may be a drop shipped and a copy of someone else's design, but it's worked perfectly for me. I've had probably 21 nights on it over a few years, so I can't speak to heavy usage, but it's as good as new for me. Slept on it down to about 30 degrees and it's been comfortable and cozy. At 6'5" and a hardcore side sleeper, I need a big pad. This is huge in all directions and weighs 2 pounds. I've never slept better in the back country. I would happily buy it again.
When facing the same general question, I ended up with this over the Big Agnes and I haven't regretted it at all. 3+ years in and I still enjoy sleeping on it. It's very thick so I don't put anything under it. [https://kilosgear.com/products/aerocloud-sleeping-pad-elite](https://kilosgear.com/products/aerocloud-sleeping-pad-elite) If you sleep hot, they have a non-elite version of the pad that is lighter and cheaper. It's basically the same pad without the insulation. I like the insulation for the nights when things get chilly out there. I don't use a sheet. Instead, I use a sleeping bag liner. On warm nights, I put the pad inside the liner and sleep on it. On colder nights, I get in the liner for a bit extra warmth. I have a silk one from Cocoon that is super light and and adds no real warmth but feels great on the skin. I also have a Sea To Summit one that is made out of thicker fleece that adds a lot of warmth. Both pack down to about the size of a soda can. If you're looking at Zenbivy for the sheet, you might want to look at their pad as well. People seem to be happy with it and you might be able to get a deal on a bundle.
I have been impressed with a company called Kilo's Gear so bought the AeroCloud Sleeping Pad Elite in Large. It comes in at under 700g and is a slight bit wider than most.
I recently purchased the kilos gear AeroCloud elite large. I’m 6’2”, weigh 220 and this pad checked off all my requirements. I’ve only used it once and found it warm and comfortable. I’m planning several backpacking trips to the Allegheny National Forest in PA soon. I’ll update this post as I go.
I went for the Kilos Gear AeroCloud. It comes in under 800g and I got it as I'm a side sleeper too. It's also wider than most. I've not had it long but it did have good longevity reviews. It's also has an R rating of 5.
Yes, I bought the large. I'll be testing it in the mountains of Saudi Arabia next weekend.
I bought the aerocloud! I blew it up and put it my tent and it was already hissing, on my first use…. I put up 2 reviews on IG, both were removed within an hour! I would look elsewhere
Kilo gear it was great inflated no issues and stayed up
