I've been very happy with a UST Fillmatic self inflating 4" pad. I picked one up cheap on clearance at Sierra last fall, and have a couple of nights on it so far. They come in 75"x25", and 80"x30" sizes. The foam is lighter, and more heavily cored than the Megamats they're copying, so they pack smaller, and lighter. That also makes it feel more comfortable than my Exped Deepsleep (3"), or Cymula 4" pad. The R-values are a bit lower because of this, but still plenty for all but the coldest of deep winter camping. They've been back up in the $160-$190 range since then, but I just saw that they're on sale at UST's site here: [https://www.ustgear.com/camp/sleeping-mats-sleeping-bags/fillmatic-sleeping-mat/1134953.html](https://www.ustgear.com/camp/sleeping-mats-sleeping-bags/fillmatic-sleeping-mat/1134953.html) Currently (4/25/25) at $76.99 for the regular, and $97.99 for the XL size.
Another vote for the Exped. HOWEVER, I freaking LOVE my UST Fillmatic and they have clips so you can connect two of them together. I’m 5’7” and my husband is 6’5”. When we shared a traditional air mattress, I was miserable. Everytime he flipped from side to side it bounced me around. When we have separate mattresses, I sleep much better. Just something else to chew on as you make your decision.
Take a look at the ust fillmatic mats. I’ve only used mine solo, but it’s super comfy and inflates on its own pretty well. But you can buckle the mats together to make one larger surface. some of my couple friends have them too and they like them for that reason. Plus that way if you want to go camping by yourself, you can split them apart and each have one.
Ok. I camp a lot and have different sleeping pads for different types of camping. My favorite types of sleeping pads are the “self inflating” ones. They don’t really self inflate all the way, but they do have an internal foam pad that draws air in as it expands from being rolled up. Once it’s laid flat, I give it some air (breath or little air pump) to make it super firm. The self-inflating pads usually run $100-150 with my favorites being the UST filimatic, Thermarest MondoKing and Exped MegaMat.
