Based on 1 year's data from Jan 26, 2026 How it works
Just got the Tapo D235. Pretty good and value for money. Otherwise I think the Tapo D230S1 is good as well
Tapo is TP-Link, a very reputable brand. The data is all saved on a microSD card in a little hub in the house. If you like you can also have it stored on the cloud for a reasonable price but they are not pushy with this service, if you select to only have it stored locally they don't try to sell the subscription anymore. I have one and have the app on multiple devices, I can view either live or triggers when someone has walked past or come to the door. They have a whole ecosystem of other security devices and cameras which can all be accessed from the same app. I'm planning to get one to look out the back as I caught a bunch of teenagers climbing over my back wall
Their naming scheme doesn't make any sense to me but after trying to compare their different models I went for the TapoD230S1 Video Doorbell Camera Kit. It comes with a little square hub that plugs into your router/WiFi box which holds the microSD card which you must buy separately, up to 512GB. I just have a 128GB one in mine. You download the Tapo app on your phone/tablet and it guides you through setup of camera and hub. Once set up you can have the app on many devices, just log in with the password you'll have made. Then you can see all the stored video saved on the microSD card or see live and even interact with a delivery person wherever in the world you are as long as you have an internet connection without the data having to be on some cloud server. I can have my phone give me notifications when someone comes to the door, like it's useful while at work to check that the dog walker didn't forget to come walk the dog and that he did bring him home or to chat to a delivery driver to tell them where to buy the parcel if not in. It can also see my car so if anyone inteferes with it while I'm on holiday I can see that - that's actually the reason I got it in the first place because I came home after being away a couple of weeks and my car have been opened up, rifled through, the interior light left on and the battery dead. But I want comfortable with using Amazon or Eufy after the stories of their employees spying on people through their cameras or Eufy's complete lack of security - the thing that got them ditched by Linus Tech Tips.
TP-Link Tapo D230S1 Smart Video Doorbell Camera Kit, good and cheap enough for the majority of households.
Im using tapo D230
Cheap with above avg quality and no subscription? People on here will recommend Reolink, seems to be the subs favorite. However I've been using Tapo products for a bit now and love them. They have everything you want, doorbell, cameras (would recommend the wired one but also have bettery ones). Price to value is realllllly good. Subscription optional, but they all have the ability to store video to the SD card. "Ai" features just mean they can recognize a person/dog/car etc. Would recommend.
I’m sure it’s true with the Eufy as well, but with the Tapo the hub can store the footage with the doorbell unit is outside. Exactly like you like

Used the D210/TD21 and now D230S1.
I have wireless Tapo. No subscription. Records to a micro sd card. https://preview.redd.it/xniqxwfxatoe1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f709ba37673e2c3dfd5640affe6eb3c2490bcab0
I have Tapo non wired. Rechargeable battery. No subscription required. I use a micro SD card.
I have a Tapo wifi battery doorbell and it's not great. With person detection on the battery barely lasts so I've got it set to only wake then the button is pressed now which kind of defeats the point. It also doesn't expose a stream to home assistant
TP-Link's Kasa or Tapo devices are what you want. Get a large enough memory card and you'll have 24/7 recording for a month. Great quality video as well. I previously had Ring, Nest, and Wyze doorbell cameras, my Tapo doorbell camera is superior to those.
Same. I had a bunch of Wyze cameras, but I've moved onto TP-Links Tapo system and am happy with it all. Their Kasa line is also good.
Tapo is good if you don't want to pay Eufy prices, but they suffer from the shortcoming of storing footage on an SD card in the doorbell unless you subscribe. However, the doorbell has an anti-theft mode with a fairly loud alarm, and the subscription is £28 per year for a single doorbell/camera which isn't bad at all.
