It’s doable, but the trade‑offs show up in reliability and polish. Eufy is probably the easiest “normal person” option. You can run it without a subscription and lean on local storage, but it’s still very cloud‑centric, and there have been enough privacy/security debates around it that I don’t treat it as truly “local first.” Reolink is more old‑school CCTV in a good way. SD card in the doorbell or recording to your own box, no account needed once it’s set up. The app is a bit clunkier, but I’ve found it more honest about local storage and plays nicer with NVRs. Wi‑Fi models can be laggy on notifications though, especially if your signal isn’t perfect. Amcrest sits in a similar camp: more “security company” than “smart gadget,” decent image quality, local recording, but the app feels dated and setup isn’t as smooth. Wyze is cheap and pleasant, but reliability, latency and long‑term support are all question marks if this is your only doorbell. If you ever decide to go beyond a doorbell and want a real alarm system with pro‑grade hardware, Ajax Systems is an interesting European option, but that’s more for full security than a budget single door camera. In your price range, I’d mostly be asking “which compromises annoy me least?” rather than hunting for a perfect option.
