"for 90% of trails, runners are too comfortable and light to not wear."

"It's truly amazing how good they are at gripping scree, sand, and unstable terrain. ... My Altra Lone Peaks saved me from nearly sliding off a cliff on sandy terrain in Arizona, kept my footing bouldering up a mountain in Pennsylvania, and across a ridgeline of scree along Mount Hood in Oregon."
"Except for the uncommonly wet mud-fest at Black Mountain many years ago I've never had grip problems."
"Great in the mud: eye-opening for someone that tends to slip and slide."

"Altras all day everyday. ... I completed the JMT last year in lone peaks"
"only pairs of shoes ive had the tread wear out before the rest of the shoe... and i mean that as a good thing ... im constantly blowing holes near by pinky toe whether disc golf or everyday use so now i just wear lone peaks or crocs for anything and everything"
"I’m very tough on shoes and Altras seem to take the punishment well."

"Additionally they are zero drop shoes which is also better for foot and ankle health and promotes a stronger achilles tendon."

"love them for hiking and running!"
"now I wear them everyday, for work, for fun, for hiking, and even in the gym."
"Unless I'm on snow and need mountaineering boots for crampons, I use LPs. They've taken me up Helens more than once, and all my other hikes for years."

"I did a drying test on both pair last year and found both dry quickly IF you remove the insole when it gets wet or keep them dry and remove them before making a water crossing. ... In the field, I walked through creeks and got my feet totally wet (not on purpose) in November with nighttime lows in the upper 20s. Shoes dried by morning and the insoles were still damp, but dried as I hiked."
"quick-drying shoes ... all the wetness will be wicked away ... When you get to camp, take out the insoles to dry the shoe."
"they dry very quickly"

"their lack of grip on wet terrain and rocks is something I really dislike!"
"if your trip involves any kind of hiking that's not on pavement or gravel I'd consider actual hiking shoes. ... some of the rougher hikes...yeah my big toe nail on one foot and a nail on the other foot is still black underneath from wearing these on a hike. ... The trails I did were rough, muddy, and slippery which resulted in me hurting my feet when I slipped and jammed my foot into rocks. ... Which would not have been an issue if I were wearing actual hiking shoes that offer more protection for your feet."
"it's too slippery especially on the downhills."

"usually exploded around 300 miles. ... the shoes easily last 100-200 miles longer. ... Mafates all the way if no other reason than durability"
"I bust both sides of my first, and last, pair of LP's at 100km. These were rocky tough trails but still.."
"their quality is just plain awful. ... Every pair I’ve owned in the last several years, be it road or trial shoes (including multiple pairs of LPs) has had the sides blown out of them well before shoes should start to fail."

"at the end of the day, my feet/ankles ached badly."
"First run i almost rolled one ankle then the other but saved it. ... Yesterday i went over quite hard on my right ankle."
"I found the 5s sloppy. ... They also felt kind of sloppy in the rear, and made me a little more prone to rolling my ankles. Never seriously, but more than other shoes."

"LP definitely low cushion, those puppies feel like barefoot shoes after 400km in them"

"Also, the grip was really crap, particularly when it’s a purpose built trail shoe."
"their lack of grip on wet terrain and rocks is something I really dislike!"
"I do caution when it comes to wet and slick rock though - for that, I have no answer, but good luck."
i also rec Altra Lone Peaks. they're trail running shoes, but i own several pairs as i find them to be comfy for walking around cities as well. some of the models look fine w/ casual outfits (tho i'm a slob so ymmv)
Altra got sold to the largest clothing company in the world a few years ago, and imo their stuff changed. I don't like the LP designs any more, so i scour ebay for older LPs in good condition. Personally the LP 5 in black/red is perfection.
Agree, LP5s are my holy grail, i buy all the ones in my size on ebay and fb. I have stockpile of \~6 pairs right now, need more to last me the rest of my life.
Appreciate it but 10.5. Another reason I love the LP5s is the color combo of black w/ red trim is my ATF.
I bought a bunch of 5s and am on my last pair. Got the 9s and have run \~4 times with them. Stack height is still the same 25mm. The main difference is that the 9 soles feel really stiff to me, like cages on my feet; I kind of hate them. My ankle started to hurt during my last run in them. Lone Peak 5s are far from the nimblest shoe I have worn, but they feel really nimble/light compared to the 9s.
Love the LP5 🥲 In searching for more of them, I’ve come across quite a few LP6s online - supposedly very similar to the 5s (lighter, but upper is not as durable). Have you had a chance to try your 9+ yet? Even though I don’t like the 9s, I’m so curious about the 9+ vibram soles. Read some reviews that said it felt stiff initially, but loosened up/became more flexible after several wears. Really tempted to try them out and maybe take advantage of their grippiness for hiking even if they don’t work out for running.
I ended up finding some 5s to try. Agree that the toebox is wider than the 6s. Overall width and length fit my hobbit feet better. I might be imagining things, but wearing them around the house, my feet feel hotter in the 5s. Wish the 5s had gaiter attachments.
I’m still rocking an old pair of Altra Lone Peak 5 trail runners. I’ll probably have to replace them after this year but I wear them whenever there isn’t snow on the ground.
I love Altra Lone Peaks. I have Lone Peak 5 trail runners for hiking in warm weather and Lone Peak ALL-WTHR Mid 2 hiking boots for hiking in the snow since they’re waterproof. The trail runners fit perfectly right from the start. I got heel/achilles blisters the first few times I wore the boots but they’re broken in now and feel great. The tread on the trail runners is finally starting to wear down so I’ll probably have to get new ones next year, but I got them on clearance in early 2022 so I’d say they were a good investment.
I thru'd the PCT in Lone Peak 5s. Comfy the whole way, never wished for more protection from the ground, never had a foot problem. Only used 2 pairs. Great shoes. Sadly, the later models are inferior and LP5s are now rare as hen's teeth.
bugger, I just bought LP9+ to replace my well-worn LP5. Guess I won't throw away the LP5 yet!
As someone that hiked 750ish miles last year, I will never use boots for anything but deep winter conditions. Lightweight and breathable trail runners are an absolute game changer for hiking. “Waterproof” shoes are definitely something you don’t need either, they are way warmer, and if they do actually get wet, they won’t dry for a very long time. Shoes are super personal, so I definitely recommend trying them on in person. I am personally biased towards wide zero drop shoes, and honestly the only trail runners that fit my super wide feet are wide Altra Lone Peaks.
Nah, I started with 3.5s and the 5s are goated. It’s the first shoe they used the updated ego midsole. Yhey honestly felt twice as soft as the old midsole material. I still have a pair of 4s I just can’t wear because the old midsole material is so much worse.
The soles of my LP5s are very flexible. They must have changed the design.
I like my LP5s, and pre-bought LO6s as a replacement for when the 5s wear out. I'm not a thru hiker and don't do big miles, so the 5s are still going strong. The one situation where I do not like them is on an extremely rocky trail, where the lack of a proper rock plate can be uncomfortable. I tend to wear boots on the Long Trail. I also wear boots on snowy, icy winter. But for the woods walking that makes up most of my backpacking, I wear LPs.

The Altras brand's Lone Peaks 5 trail running shoes were so good, I'm using them for walking now that the spikes on the soles have all worn down!
I started with the 2.5s and now wear the 9s. I’ve worn the 2.5, 4, 5, 6 and 9s and the 4s are by far the best.
