Lone Peaks with a SOLE Wide footbed
Hello, I was very happy with my Altra Lone Pak 6's in wide, unfortunately the new LP9+ had too much heel slip for me. I'm a bit of an ultralight cultist (gearism is nuts) and so I always liked the Norda design and materials, still I always thought they'll end up being to narrow for me anyways coming from the Altra Lone Peaks in their wide version. Does any of you have experience with both Altra and Norda & what you think about the fit? I'm also open for Ideas for great alternatives to the Lone peaks until they maybe 'fix' the LP 10's, I saw Inov8, and I found it kind of sad that Topo did not have 'a proper choice of colours' in their Wide versions. Not so many great wide feet trailrunners, are there? I always liked the light ripstop upper on the older Lone Peaks, the newer is a bit thicker. I saw Norda uses a pretty thin Dyneema fabric, seems like a good choice for a year round or warmer climate shoe. I may end up ordering and trying anyways, just always a little hassle where I live. Thank you! EDIT: Tried on the recommended size + 0.5 and it was a just a little to small and a little to pointy in the toebox coming from Altras & barefoot shoes. Will soon try on 1.5 sizes bigger.
As someone that hiked 750ish miles last year, I will never use boots for anything but deep winter conditions. Lightweight and breathable trail runners are an absolute game changer for hiking. “Waterproof” shoes are definitely something you don’t need either, they are way warmer, and if they do actually get wet, they won’t dry for a very long time. Shoes are super personal, so I definitely recommend trying them on in person. I am personally biased towards wide zero drop shoes, and honestly the only trail runners that fit my super wide feet are wide Altra Lone Peaks.
Mrs got the Lone Peak 9 in 2E (shss usually a 4E) and so far no complaints I picked up the New Balance Hierro v9 and again loving them. https://www.northernrunner.com//shoes-c133/waterproof-gore-tex-running-shoes-c1401/fresh-foam-x-hierro-v9-gore-tex-wide-mens-trail-running-shoes-black-p10121/s75632
Did you get them from the store? or the website? The stores don't carry their wide ones. You have to go online to get those. And they are most definitely wide. I have square feet, need a wide mid like you.
This. The ones they sell in stores are not their "WIDE" shoes. You have to special order them. I have square feet... Altras are the only shoe that's ever come close to actually fitting.
Currently a pair of Altra Lone Peaks. They're pretty good. Really fucking expensive. I'd love a pair of merrils, but even the extra wides are too narrow. It's not even the toe box for me. The middle of my foot is wide. So these clown shoes out there with huge toe boxes still have narrow arches and those dig into my feet. It's a lifelong problem, and wanting to have hiking shoes that fit just makes it even harder.
Sadly yes. It was the wide version Because my feet as so wide and I have no arch when I land my foot is fully flat. Where most people have an arch their arch never hits the shoes. I can’t find a pair wide enough for someone with a totally flat foot.
Lone peaks in an extra wide size are the only trail runners I have found that are wide enough for my feet. Topos are way to narrow at the mid foot, even on their wide sizes, and Altras other models don't come in an extra wide size. Sometimes I wish they had Olympus in the wide to get some extra cushioning but I mostly just think of that when I am going over long stretches of lava rock...
I always hear this but I have had no problems with the later models, I did not try 6 or 7s though. I used 9s on the PCT I was getting 500-800 miles out a pair and some of those could have kept going on the tread and uppers but that doesn't stop the foam from getting compressed so I try to replace around 650 at the latest anyway.
Was it the wide version of the lone peak 9? I find them to be really wide
I run in Alta lone peak wide. They are the roomiest shoes I can find for my wide ass flat feet.
Altra Lone Peak in Wide 100%. Widest toe box of any shoe on the board. I have 4E width feet and this is the ONLY trail running shoe that actually fits and doesn't crush my toes.
I've only used the LP since v5 and I am very hard on shoes in general with extremely wide feet. Currently running mountain trails in v8 and v9 and there are noticeable improvements in each version, although it's also a matter of preference in shoe features and construction. I noticed a difference in v6 and v7 when they moved from the heavier stitched overlays to the more "modern" shoe construction where the pieces are mostly glued together to reduce weight and stitches, and I also think they moved to thinner materials. For example the toe cap was previously a stitched on overlay that provided actual toe protection, where it's now a thin overlay that provides far less protection and is easier to rip or break, but also reduces weight and streamlines the manufacturing process. I basically skipped v7 entirely. I have very wide feet and the LP is the only zero drop trail running shoe that fits, so I keep getting it knowing I won't get 500 miles from a pair (I keep shoes in rotation so I don't track actual mileage in a single pair). IMHO you can't go wrong with the Lone Peak if it fits your use case and feet.
