"I even washed them accidentally and still worked perfectly fine afterwards."

"Been using them for about four years working out in my gym, and cycling daily (45+ minutes on a bicycle outdoors)."

"They last absolutely forever (I know 1980s models still in daily use)"

"I was quite impressed with its comfort and trail capabilities, and truly believed I had found an excellent shoe for my long runs and hikes. ... the New Balance Hierro v9 remains my top choice for comprehensive trail running. Its superior comfort and, crucially, its consistently reliable grip in varied and challenging conditions make it a more dependable partner on the trails I typically encounter. ... I feel more secure in the Hierro, and that confidence is key. In fact I will be using it for my upcoming races and that says it all."

"The Vibram Megagrip outsole on the Hierro v9 is simply outstanding. Its 4.5mm lugs provide excellent, reliable traction across various surfaces, from dry dirt to slick roots and muddy patches. I've always felt incredibly secure, and it consistently inspires confidence in diverse conditions. ... Great Vibram outsole grip, even on mud and wet rocks"

"The Trabuco 12 have been the best trail shoes I’ve ever owned. ... I’m 6”4 and charge hard over serious rocky terrain…and I feel completely safe in them."

"Ran a 50k and never once bothered my feet."

"They have a normal heel and midfoot, but the forefoot is very roomy. ... My feet haven't felt so good in years."

"This is the shoe I take when I can only have one shoe for both on an off road."

"For what you’re describing, the Zegama Trail 2 are amazing. ... I just can’t find anything wrong with them ... They’ve accompanied me on OCC last year, three weeks hiking in Bolivia this spring, and regular training and hiking in Austrian and French alps…"

"Nike Zegama 2 is top tier shoe. ... Done a 90k ultra in them and they were flawless."

"They are super stable. ... On par with Novablast 4/5, Superblast 2, Glycerin Max, Caldera 6, Saucony Hurricane 24, Saucony Triumph 22, Hoka Bondi 8 (all shoes that I own that I consider "stable"). ... For a high stack height, I noticed the stability characteristic as well. ... It didn't run like a max stack shoe."

"It squishes. ... It bounces ... it doesn't wobble."

"For that, I have found nothing better than the asics trabucos. I swear they have saved me from multiple twisted ankles."

"where it bends in front by the toes is pinching the side of my foot."

"They fit more rigid with more pressure points and have less room in the tow box. ... They were never as comfortable out of the box or hiking as a topo athletic shoe and I’ve had several pairs. ... I’m always very ready to take these shoes off at the end of the day.. ... after a long day, my feet feel like they were in a rock crusher since the cushion 0%."

"I hate how narrow the toe box is. ... It’s causing issues. ... I simply can’t run in them any longer. ... That is not the case, at least for my foot. ... I can’t imagine how narrow earlier versions were!"

"The lugs are fairly low profile by trail shoe standards. Due to that, very soft mud and wet conditions they are not good for."

"only reason for replacement was the outsole lugs had worn down and no longer gave grip in the wet mud."

"They’re not brilliant on mud"

"I jokingly call my clown shoes because that’s exactly how they feel! ... I’m constantly stubbing them on branches, rocks, and gravel ... it’s like the lugs are magnets for anything they could possibly trip over. ... I only wear them when I have to."

"Trabuco 13s upper is not good, it breaks really easy ... I won't get more than 400km from any of them (second one is a replacement sent by Asics)"

"The Gel Trabuco Max felt as if the insole/midsole was completely flat. Zero arch or other support."

Came here to comment exactly this. I'm 6'2", 190lb (188cm/87kg). Daily trail runner in Switzerland, running 70-80km/week. I have the Trabuco Max 2 and Max 3. Version 4 is the most recent launch. By far the most comfortable trail shoes I've ever owned. They just work perfectly for me. Have over 1000km in the 3's, so super durable too. Also own Hoka Stinson 6 (bit soft), Brooks Caldera 6 (too firm, never softened up), Altra Olympus 6 (midsole felt dead from the start) and Nike Wildhorse 7 (most comfortable upper of any shoe but midsole a bit thin) but none are as good for me as the Trabuco Max.

Nike Zegama 2 has a sticky Vibram sole and is frequently on sale and widely available. Asics Trabuco Max 2 / 3 also has good grip and is comfortable. Both can be run in on and off pavement. Both are comfortable enough to wear for casual use.

S-tier: Asicsgrip. Tested it on mossy wet rocks by the waterfall. Beats megagrip

My asics tabucos, fujilite 3s and even gel cumulus TRs are seemingly indestructible. My feet don't seem to want anything else. My Salomons feel like plastic boxes compared to the asics.

Asics Trabuco (non max!) is stable and similar to your Kayano's. I personally like Nike Zegama 2's as well they are very comfortable and very stable. In trails shoes you are just looking for stable shoes, pronation correction doesn't really exist there. Only really bad shoe I ever had was the Trabuco Max 3, very high stack + very soft. For that same reason you might want to stay away from the Mafate 5

With trail runners you're going to protect your feet more if you're hiking a trail where you are navigating big rocks and tree stumps, etc. Think less stubbed toes and less time removing debris etc . I think overall, you'll be able to hike more trails with trail runners. You can always strap your Sandals onto your day pack for water crossing or for the option. I know a lot of people like the Altras. I've owned four different pairs of ASICS Trabucos. The best thing to do is to go to a store and try them all on because everybody's feet are different. Ps. Get yourself some affordable dirty girl gaiters to keep debris from entering your shoes and you'll be set!

I just put 500+ miles on my Asics Max Trabucco 3 through the mountains and where my go tos for post Helene trail clean up and I got to say, those babies are indestructible.. the only thing I tore up towards the last 80mi was the back of the heel part/material, which could have been avoided and even now still repaired with some heel patches. I’m now running with Topo Ultraventure 4 because I needed a wider toe box option. These only have a little over 30mi on them so I can’t speak to the quality just yet. I can’t speak as to how these may fit you but the quality/comfort of the Max Trabucco is definitely on point.

I like Vibram a lot, any shoe with a Megagrip outsole will have enough traction for me. But I have found that it is not the end all be all anymore. Asicsgrip is stickier than Vibram and extremely durable on top. It's amazing stuff, really. Asics' trail lineup is not that big, but they have some really interesting models and a great allrounder in the Trabuco.

I mostly run with Asics trabuco max shoes, max stack, very technical terrain mostly, I have only rolled my ankle once because of the socks, lightweight or kinda sleek socks makes your feet roll inside the shoe, if you get some nice thicker rough socks you wont have rolling ankle problems, or much less

r/trailrunning • Hello! For trail running do you typically want a lower drop shoe? I worry about rolling my ankle sometimes. What is ideal drop for trail running? ->
