I have worn every trail shoe that anyone could think of. I have a weird sickness around buying shoes. The stiffness and stack height of the midsole is going to affect the traction strongly. A squishy shoe will remove itself from edges when weighted. I have had the most luck with shoes having the Vibram Megagrip outsole. Speedgoats are great, but they’re too stacky and cushioned to provide top level traction in super technical terrain. My current favorite shoe for technical runs is a Dynafit Alpine. I have the DNA version which has a ridiculous amount of support and lockdown from the upper. Shoes for super technical terrain are highly specialized since most trail runners are on relatively easy trails (I live in Colorado and do miles of off-trail scrambling in my shoes). The Sportiva Bushidos are great when you’re doing a lot of scrambling and a little running, but they’re not the best shoes for actual trail miles. If you’re not on rocks for miles and you have to negotiate snow, mud, and soft dirt, the Solomon Speedcross are great due to the height of the lugs. People like the Mutants for super technical stuff, too. If you want to go all in on traction, get into a pair of La Sportiva TX2’s and cry when your 170 dollar shoes don’t have a midsole anymore after 7 big days out. I used to also really like the Altra King Mountains before the Alpines took over.
r/trailrunning • trail running shoes ->I run in the mountains of Western North Carolina and bought my first pair of Dynafits(Alpine DNA) last year and I absolutely love them on the single tracks here. I'm still partial to Salomon's as a better all rounder(my Dynafit's are simply not good on gravel), but for a fast single track only shoe, the Dynafit's blew me away.

Here in WNC, I run a mix of either flowy and smooth, steep and technical whether roots or rock(these things grip wet roots and rock like crazy), and also a fair amount of mud, and I havent found a downside yet.
r/trailrunning • The 25 most recommend trail runners on Reddit (in the past year as of Jul 2025) ->Haha, shoe fit is definitely personal. I tried my first pair of Dynafit a few years back, and it was the first pair that i felt comfortable in the toe area without the rest of my foot rolling inside the shoe when not tying my shoelace extremely tight. Yes, I have narrow and low volume feet. I had the feline and the alpine. But I read their ultra lines are more spacious. Btw, I am from Hong Kong and the megagrip soles can handle the wet mossy muddy terrains as well as the loose sandy slopes well.
r/trailrunning • Dynafit ->I have been using feline for technical terrain, not just because of the grip, but also the close fit makes them feel like gloves and I feel connected and thus confident when going down some pretty nasty unmarked trails. However, they are definitely not the most comfy for concrete (which unfortunately for HK is something we have to mix with trails often). well, as I only do short to medium distances, this is manageable. Alpine is a bit more cushiony than the Feline
r/trailrunning • Dynafit ->Went with Dynafit Alpine for trail running and Altra Olympus for hiking. The Vibram sole on both shoes have proven it's worth, keeping me on the my feet while jumping from rock to rock while others are slipping and struggling.
r/hikinggear • Is it reasonable to have 1 pair of shoes for hiking, trail running, and walking on paved paths? ->There are no trail shoes with a pronation-support system. Such system is counterproductive on an uneven trail and can cause problems and injuries. I am running Adrenaline and Glycerine GTS as my road shoes and have x-bionic, dynafit and saucony Peregrines as my trail running shoes. X-bionic and dynafit are relatively stable, I use a special insole in Peregrines (not from orthopedics)
r/trailrunning • Can anyone recommend trail running shoes that are not waterproof and have built-in pronation support? ->The Dynafit Trail, light, stable great grip and versatile cushioning! r/trailrunning • Road to trail shoe recommendations. ->From my experience shoes that worked best on such terrain are Salomon Genesis and La Sportiva Mutant. Other La Sportiva shoes should do well because they are generally targeted for mountain running. Also, from my experience, Dynafit shoes are well suited for mountain running. Finally, if you want to see a selection of shoes and gear in general that is targeted towards mountain running take a look at Skyrun store (https://skyrun.skimo.co/). This is a real physical store in Utah. I ordered from them several times without any issues.
