"As far as grip goes, all three are excellent. It's truly amazing how good they are at gripping scree, sand, and unstable terrain."

"super comfy (my knees ache so much less on descents with them) ... I can’t stress enough how much they’ve helped my bad left knee on descents."
"The Hoka SG is far better at protecting the bottoms of your feet."
"Since wearing Hoka Speedgoats, now for years, I have not rolled my ankles once. ... The reason is that the sole is super wide and tapers aggressively from the fabric, outward into a wedge shape."

"they are extremely durable. ... I’ve got well over 1000 miles out of a pair and they still have grip and the uppers are in great shape"

"even in the men's wide I have to wrap my bunions in leukotape and still get a lot of irritation due to the toe squeeze of the tapered toe box (and I'm already going up 1/2 size)"

"They fit more rigid with more pressure points and have less room in the tow box. ... They were never as comfortable out of the box or hiking as a topo athletic shoe and I’ve had several pairs. ... I’m always very ready to take these shoes off at the end of the day.. ... after a long day, my feet feel like they were in a rock crusher since the cushion 0%."

"Personally I can't stand the soft foam right below the heel on those shoes- it wears thin enough after maybe 100 miles that small pointy rocks jab right in there. ... I have repeatedly bruised my heels on rocky downhills in Speedgoats, once so badly that I thought I'd broken my calcaneus. ... Never buying them again."

"the midsole is flatter than a pancake ... the midsole cushion is gone and causing foot pain"

"An almost new pair I wore in a mountain 100 was dead after the race. ... It was all stretched out and even had a hole in the side when it wasn't that crazy technical of terrain."

"Out of the box, VERY grippy, but after 100 miles of trails they’re shredded. I had to switch to protect my wallet! ... Wasn’t really the shoe itself, the lugs/tread just get worn down to nothing in my usual hiking area in San Diego county. It’s a shame, I do love the shoe, just wish Hoka would make a change to a more rugged material."

"I might try to stay away then. I’ve been able to avoid rolls for a while but a bad one is such a big set back ... I might give those a try first. ... I’m going to give them both a try but would rather not fall in love if it’s going to get me injured haha"

"If it's snow/slush/excessive mud, I'll move up to Salomon 4D GTX boots and usually gaiters."
"If water gets inside the shoe through the top, like deep water, swimming, dunk wall, it just means the water is trapped inside."
"When it gets really muddy or incredibly rocky, I transition to TOPO hikers."

"Indeed the vibram lugs after 18 months of using mostly on hard surfaces were destroyed on one side. ... And that may happen in general to trail shoes with big lugs instead of more asphalt oriented outsole."
"I find running on road in luged shoes way more uncomfortable"
"they aren't great on harder surfaces for long periods"
yes they are... 5's were bad too. Mafate4 is the real progression for speedgoat 4's.
I wear Hoka Speedgoat Spikes (the 5, GTX) and they’re a game changer for me! Love being able to run in such a wide range of conditions, whether it’s icy city streets or light mountain running.
I thought the 5 was awful and haven't even tried the 6. Have 2 pairs of 5s with about 100k in each. Lugs wore quickly and you felt every rock in them. Very little energy return from the foam. Switched to mafates and they are a better shoe is every way for me
Its the most sold because its one of the only trail shoes you see in normal running shops the sell hoka. It is an absolute turd of a shoe with nothing going for it. I run in plenty of hoka trail shoes and will never use the speedboat again because it is trash
Tbh my 5 fell apart. The 6 have been more durable so maybe unpopular opinion but I like the 6 better
You’re on the right track if you want Bushido but with more cushion then the obvious first port of call is the La Sportiva Mutant. If you want even more cushion and slightly less technical capability then try Akasha or Prodigio. Otherwise something like Salomon S lab Alpine, or S lab Ultra. Nnormal Kjerag is another very technically capable shoe but also known for being low stack, perhaps more comfortable for running than Bushido though (I haven’t tried both so can’t confirm). My controversial pick that others may balk at is Speedgoat 5s and 6s. They’re not necessarily nimble but they do have Vibram Megagrip and I’ve really appreciated their ability to scramble.
The bad reviews are from people who liked previous versions. New versions of shoes that change *anything at all* always get bad reviews. I thought the SG5 was amazing, but when it came out the people who were used to the SG4 were saying it was horrible.
You might as well try them, most people seem to love them. I loved them at first, but after a long run the tongue started digging into the top of my right foot (and only my right foot...) and it was incredibly painful to run in. I was about to just donate them but the person at my local shoe store said she heard of a few people having that problem and the solution is to cut out the padding on the tongue. I did a bunch of research and found a few other people mentioning this exact problem with that solution. So that's what I did. I cut a small slit in each of the 4 "tubes" that hold the padding and pulled all of the padding out. Now they are absolutely perfect. But FWIW, my previous favorite shoe was the Tomir 2.0 and I just bought another pair of those because I thought I'd have to ditch the Prodigio Pros. And before the Tomir my favorite shoe was the Hoka Speedgoat 5. I also run a lot in Topo Mtn Racer 3 and Hoka Challenger 7. I own too many shoes and it turns out my feet are generally not too picky... literally the only shoe I've tried to run in that caused actual pain was the Prodigio Pro before I fixed them.
It looks like they removed the stupid lip on the back. That was really the only thing I didn't like about the Speedgoat 5 (haven't tried the 6, which also has the lip). It basically acts as a shovel to collect leaves, twigs, and gravel to deposit them in my shoe when I run.
Hah, I felt like the SG5 wasn't properly broken-in until after 50 miles.
The SG5's were the most popular trail running shoe for a while. But a lot of folks didn't like the 6 and there are also like 5x more trail shoes available now than there were even just a few years ago. Brands like NNormal and Mount to Coast didn't even exist then. The SG5 was my all-time favorite trail shoe when it came out, I went through 4 pairs of them. But now my favorite is La Sportiva Prodigio Pro, which didn't exist when I was running with SG5s.
Had the same issue with the SG5 and switched to Normal Tomir 2.0 and am very happy with them.
if you are in asics n like asics fit, maybe Fuji n Trabuco also something you should look into. for my light gravel, i have Novablast3 TR, n sometimes also got away with Adizero SL2. but my long distance trail shoes are Torrent2, Speedgoat5, XodusUltra2 n just newly acquired EndorphinRift. among my lineup, SG5 probably overkill for something under 30km. for Salomon, most reviewer would highlight about its narrowness. take note
i used xu2 for my utmb chiangmai 100k n verbier 100k, theyre plenty cushioned. prior to these 2 races, i used sg5 for transjeju 100k n chiangmai 50k, also comfy. the reason i went for xu2 for my recent races coz theyre less 'bulky' than sg5. so far for my races with dropbag access, i havent swap shoes despite having 2nd shoe in bag, but i do swap socks n insoles(when theyre damp)
where are you from? are you into shopping china shoe? i have SG5, and currently im running in Li-Ning Di Lu2 (arnv009), and its as close to SG5, or even better midsole feel. only thing, its kinda 0.5cm short on its sizing
- Bmai Pace6 Trex-Cordura: 35km - LiNing Di Lu 2: 25km , replacing my SG5 for ultra distance - Salomon ultraglide3: 225km - saucony endorphin rift: 25km, a lil too snug n rigid toebox for long distance, so it will be for short distances only for now - asics novablast 3TR: 750km, mainly on non technical cruising use my SG5 n Saucony XU2 just got relegated: - hoka speedgoat5: 475km,the lugs worn out severely, i still kept it around undecided if it worth resole - saucony xodusultra2: 950km, upper medial side already start tearing, lugs worn out
This is my choice. My Hokas have a different foot splay.
I really really love my Hoka speedgoat gtx
