"I love my Speedgoat 5 for trail running"

"I hiked the Colorado trail, which is unsurprisingly very mountainous, rocky, and steep, in Hoka Speedgoats and not once thought I’d made a mistake wearing them."

"I know I'm not the only person in the world who uses Speedgoats for hiking/backpacking but also for trail running. They've accompanied me on a few trips to the store, too. ... But the Speedgoats are my do-it-all pair, and they get the most play."

"I've since switched to Hoka Speedgoats and all that is a distant memory. ... Super cushy ... the payback in end-of-the-day comfort is huge to me."

"The Hoka SG is far better at protecting the bottoms of your feet."

"Since wearing Hoka Speedgoats, now for years, I have not rolled my ankles once. ... The reason is that the sole is super wide and tapers aggressively from the fabric, outward into a wedge shape."

"6 blisters me."

"they aren't great on harder surfaces for long periods"

"I would consider staying away from the super squishy shock absorbing shoes like a Norda 001 or Speed goat 5. With a back pack the higher stack height might make you more prone to rolling ankles."

"Out of the box, VERY grippy, but after 100 miles of trails they’re shredded. I had to switch to protect my wallet! ... Wasn’t really the shoe itself, the lugs/tread just get worn down to nothing in my usual hiking area in San Diego county. It’s a shame, I do love the shoe, just wish Hoka would make a change to a more rugged material."

"I might try to stay away then. I’ve been able to avoid rolls for a while but a bad one is such a big set back ... I might give those a try first. ... I’m going to give them both a try but would rather not fall in love if it’s going to get me injured haha"

"the speed goats have a bit of an outward flare from the top to the bottom of the soul. Creates a larger footprint, a bigger platform. Certainly helped. But largely, I twist my ankles regularly. It fucking hurts"

"Personally I can't stand the soft foam right below the heel on those shoes- it wears thin enough after maybe 100 miles that small pointy rocks jab right in there. ... I have repeatedly bruised my heels on rocky downhills in Speedgoats, once so badly that I thought I'd broken my calcaneus. ... Never buying them again."

I love my SpeedGoat 6s. My favorite trail running shoe. Edit: To add some detail, I prefer the six over the five. Regarding other shoes I like the torrent three and Clifton nine as well. The speed goats sit at 300 miles and are going strong. Hope that helps.

In no particular order - SpeedGoat GTX Spike - Screwshoes - Kahtoola spikes Spikes work better than screws. But screws are the cheapest solution. I get bruises from the exospikes. But that seems to be the exception. Something about their fit and pressure from the straps on my toes.

Icebugs are high quality and durable. Also had Hoka Speedgoat Spike and was happy, particularly with how the foot is protected from the spike pressure.

My feet hurts when I run in icebug or hooka speedgoat 5 spikes so if it’s icy I just put on some kaahtoola nano spikes on some of my other shoes

North of Sweden here, so winters = thick layer of ice and snow on pretty much all roads, paths and trails. I use Speedgoat GTX spike, the ones with metal spikes. Works a charm, and I never have to worry about slipping. I reckon pretty much all makes has at least one winter shoe on offer, so you can use whatever you're used to but with winter outsoles.

I wear Hoka Speedgoat Spikes (the 5, GTX) and they’re a game changer for me! Love being able to run in such a wide range of conditions, whether it’s icy city streets or light mountain running.

You’re on the right track if you want Bushido but with more cushion then the obvious first port of call is the La Sportiva Mutant. If you want even more cushion and slightly less technical capability then try Akasha or Prodigio. Otherwise something like Salomon S lab Alpine, or S lab Ultra. Nnormal Kjerag is another very technically capable shoe but also known for being low stack, perhaps more comfortable for running than Bushido though (I haven’t tried both so can’t confirm). My controversial pick that others may balk at is Speedgoat 5s and 6s. They’re not necessarily nimble but they do have Vibram Megagrip and I’ve really appreciated their ability to scramble.

The bad reviews are from people who liked previous versions. New versions of shoes that change *anything at all* always get bad reviews. I thought the SG5 was amazing, but when it came out the people who were used to the SG4 were saying it was horrible.

r/trailrunningLa Sportiva Prodigio Pro as an trail allrounder?

You might as well try them, most people seem to love them. I loved them at first, but after a long run the tongue started digging into the top of my right foot (and only my right foot...) and it was incredibly painful to run in. I was about to just donate them but the person at my local shoe store said she heard of a few people having that problem and the solution is to cut out the padding on the tongue. I did a bunch of research and found a few other people mentioning this exact problem with that solution. So that's what I did. I cut a small slit in each of the 4 "tubes" that hold the padding and pulled all of the padding out. Now they are absolutely perfect. But FWIW, my previous favorite shoe was the Tomir 2.0 and I just bought another pair of those because I thought I'd have to ditch the Prodigio Pros. And before the Tomir my favorite shoe was the Hoka Speedgoat 5. I also run a lot in Topo Mtn Racer 3 and Hoka Challenger 7. I own too many shoes and it turns out my feet are generally not too picky... literally the only shoe I've tried to run in that caused actual pain was the Prodigio Pro before I fixed them.

It looks like they removed the stupid lip on the back. That was really the only thing I didn't like about the Speedgoat 5 (haven't tried the 6, which also has the lip). It basically acts as a shovel to collect leaves, twigs, and gravel to deposit them in my shoe when I run.

Hah, I felt like the SG5 wasn't properly broken-in until after 50 miles.

The SG5's were the most popular trail running shoe for a while. But a lot of folks didn't like the 6 and there are also like 5x more trail shoes available now than there were even just a few years ago. Brands like NNormal and Mount to Coast didn't even exist then. The SG5 was my all-time favorite trail shoe when it came out, I went through 4 pairs of them. But now my favorite is La Sportiva Prodigio Pro, which didn't exist when I was running with SG5s.

Hoka Speedgoat 5 - I am on my 2nd regular pair and also have the GTX version for snow or mud. They are great. I had them on my feet for 6 hours + with no pain points. Super comfy. I also use them for golf as well.
