"I did a drying test on both pair last year and found both dry quickly IF you remove the insole when it gets wet or keep them dry and remove them before making a water crossing. ... In the field, I walked through creeks and got my feet totally wet (not on purpose) in November with nighttime lows in the upper 20s. Shoes dried by morning and the insoles were still damp, but dried as I hiked."
"quick-drying shoes ... all the wetness will be wicked away ... When you get to camp, take out the insoles to dry the shoe."
"I really appreciated the Altra Lone Peak 4, 4.5, and 5 because they shedded the water with every step. ... Coupled with merino wool socks, on a warm day, I could wade across a river and within about 30 minutes have mostly dry feet."

"About 100 miles of trails and they look like they are brand new besides mud stains."
"Cascadias are super durable. ... When I was a letter carrier they were my shoe of choice- you could often find last year's model on sale, and the outsoles held up much better than many other brands over time."
"Salomon speedcross can take a beaten on the trails. ... Two pairs in 3 years with about 800 miles each pair."

"Got me through a week with everything Utah can throw at you - snow, mud, dirt, gravel, sand, slickrock, slot-canyon scooting, and the occasional stream crossing - and I never felt unsure of my footing."
"great traction"
"They also have the best sole material I’ve found for slippery mud and rocks."

"Super comfortable right out of the box."
"Not for me. Super comfortable right out of the box."
"The new Inov8 shoes all have anatomical toe boxes ( at least as wide as Topo) ... I don't have the old ones, but I can just about guarantee the new ones are way wider. ... Every shoe I've ever worn, including "wider" brands like New Balance, has had to be 2E to fit my toes; but now both Topo and Inov8 I can wear their normal width shoes comfortably."

"Every blue moon I roll an ankle but that’s because of tough terrain, not boots, and I’ve never injured my ankles in the process."
"they do tend to be very low stack - which is the main thing that I find helps ankles. ... Some of their new 'Speed' racier models have like 4mm drop and less than 20mm stack"
"Cutting the lugs made the shoes much more stable. ... They don't roll at all for me now."

"The problem is that the precision fit isn't precise - a massive step back given their intended use."
"They all fit differently. ... It was infuriating. ... So, a warning to all: Try all models of a given brand, because you can't rely on equivalent fit."
"I did end up going for a run with them yesterday though and I don't think they're going to work for me. I want them to, but there's just not enough room for my toes in the end. ... Ultimately I do like them and their build quality is clearly superior to Speedgoats. But between their non-wide toebox and having to *size normally* to accommodate that instead of *sizing down* like the internet suggests because they *fit long*, I found they fit a bit awkwardly. ... I've ran in them four times now and rolled my ankle three of those times. Yesterday put me on the verge of injury. I want to like them, and they're built very well, but they're not built for my feet. I think they're just too narrow and throw off my balance."

"I’m not convinced the Zegama is suitable for terrains that are moderate and up in terms of technicality. ... And I’m not convinced they can hold up on slippery surfaces. ... If I’m going to go for a mountain run with small rocks and tree roots, where there might be some damp/water, I’m going to reach for another shoe."

"very fragile when they come into contact with any rocks or roots. ... When I finished they were full of holes. ... For 160 euros I'll be lucky if they last the month."
"In the front right corner of the left shoe (and vice versa with the right one) they have a strange sharp strengthening that cuts against my toe. ... It doesn't really hurt the first few kilometers, but if I run over 8 km, especially in the descents they destroy my toe to a point it really hurts a lot and I can't wear the shoes for another 2 days."
"the material is starting to tear on both sides where my foot bends. ... Low miles on the shoes. ... so it appears durability has decreased as well. ... It’s very disappointing."

"The stability around the ankles is terrible ... keep rolling the ankle ... it has happened with both ankles"
"shit at contouring"
"total lack of precision ... super sloppy on foot, no precision ... too high stack and baggy to have the precision you want in a fell racing shoe ... move on your feet like mad ... Horrible to contour or tussock bash in ... Contouring in them is horrific!"

"The only downside is that they absolutely suck if you need to run a short stretch of paved road."
"bleed your legs dry on any hard surface ... you get no return on them"
"hate the lack of energy return. ... Feel like I've got bricks on my feet after 50 miles!"
I started noticing this a couple years ago and planned accordingly. For me I have huge feet and it's hard to find good shoes. For those in my situation and like a low drop and low rise, look into Inov-8. I've only bought these shoes since early '23 and I hope they never change.
r/trailrunning • Why are so many trail shoes now high stack + high drop? ->I would look at Inov8's range - there are various models with varying drop and characteristics, but they do tend to be very low stack - which is the main thing that I find helps ankles. I like the old Inov8 trailfly 270s - I think that they have stopped naking them but they are still available online - these are zero drop and low stack, but were designed to cover long distance on various terrain. They are definitely nimble. Some of their new 'Speed' racier models have like 4mm drop and less than 20mm stack so could be worth looking at.
r/trailrunning • Nimble and safe shoes recommendation ->Inov8 mud talons or trail talons. I have the old mud talons, good ground feel and crazy grip, not the most comfortable longer distance. Otherwise VJ Maxx. In group tests the La Sportiva Mutants often come out in top of anything grip based. Haven't tried them myself but that rubber has an excellent reputation.
r/trailrunning • Need advice: trail shoes for muddy ultra races ->Topo mtn racer has better grip. Inov8 has better grip also; Trailfly for hard trails and Mudfly for wet/mud.
r/trailrunning • What to choose as second shoes? ->I have wide feet and went for inov8 mudtalon wide in 1.5 size up. They were still not wide enough so I'd say she can skip them altogether with this shape of feet
r/trailrunning • Help needed to find shoes that fit these feet. ->I have the Mudtalon speed. Amazing shoe on the softer stuff and the compound seems ok on the wet rockier bits too, where past graphene grip inov8s haven’t been that good. Not so keen on it for prolonged tarmac sections if needed but it’s not the worst - I would actually love them to make the same shoe just with a bit more cushion for longer stuff. That being said, I’ve taken this up to 20 miles at a time and been fine.
r/trailrunning • UK fell runners. - shoe help please ->I much prefer the new Mudtalon to these - have had both. The X-talon a pure soft ground shoe I think though. Wouldn't like to be caught on wet slabby rock. You can get a range of fits in the newer shoe too - precision, standard and wide which helps.
r/trailrunning • Inov8 X Talon 260, worth a buy? ->Long reply here but I understand this quite niche problem all too well. I have a bunion in the same place on left foot but actually have skinny midfoot so always struggle to get a lockdown in 'wide' shoes. The Inov8 Trailfly and their new range works well here. I'd actually go for the standard fit over wide as the toe box is already foot shaped. The width I think is in the midfoot. For example, I have a pair of precision fit Mudtalons and get a super snug midfoot lockdown but the toebox still lets my foot spread. The problem you actually have is that a lot of 'wide toe box' shoes still carry that super straight line on the inside of the foot which obviously doesn't work. Even the Prodigio Pro mentioned is quite accommodating but suffers from this to a degree as the bunion pushes the mesh out and can become uncomfortable by forcing your foot or all toes away to the side. Salomon shoes are quite bad for this, even though I suck it up and wear them as the midfoot just suits my feet. The Trailfy is the comfiest shoe I've worn in years, and I've even cleaned mine up and now wear them for walking around daily and the gym. They do a Trailtalon too if you need more softground grip, plus a road shoe. Edit to add: if anything like me, mine is just on the one foot so if I buy wide shoes, the other is super sloppy. This is why a better shape toe box works better than a wide fitting shoe in my opinion.
r/trailrunning • Help needed to find shoes that fit these feet. ->Gravel is a tricky surface, I agree. It probably depends on the the percentage of a certain terrain in a run that I choose the shoes. Generally, for steep grass I like Mudtalons with 8mm lugs, for snow the Genesis and for barely runnable rocks Bushidos. But then again, there is always a trade-off, since a run is usually composed of different surfaces. As an allrounder in alpine environment, I often go for Dynafit, Prodigio or Ribelle Run. YMMY. (And yes: I might have too many shoes).
r/trailrunning • The 25 most recommend trail runners on Reddit (in the past year as of Jul 2025) ->I’ve been wearing Inov-8s for 15+ years for trail and fell running and even moved to them for XC races when achilles injuries meant I could no longer wear spikes. Always done the job for me, reasonable value and regularly available with chunky discounts online.
r/trailrunning • Looking for my first trail running shoes..help needed ->Inov-8 has a bunch of models in a wide size now. Even the older models I use have a lot of room for my toes. Durability is fine I think, compared to what I read about Altras.
r/Ultralight • advice wanted on trail runners for hiking ->I'd say yes (not having used the latest models personally though). I find mine very comfortable.
r/Ultralight • advice wanted on trail runners for hiking ->I can also confirm the durability of Inov-8s!
r/Ultralight • Another discussion on shoes - please help ->I don’t have answers, but I’m with ya! Have run in the X-Talon 200’s and lighter options for years. They are all gone now. I’m trying the Mudtalon Speeds now. Beefier shoe than I’m used to, but not terrible, 4mm drop, which is at my upper limit. Main complaint so far is that the material is starting to tear on both sides where my foot bends. Low miles on the shoes. …so it appears durability has decreased as well. It’s very disappointing.
r/trailrunning • What happened to Inov8 shoes? ->Inov-8 Mudtalon Speed is what I’m in at the moment for this type of terrain.
r/trailrunning • Best Shoes for Orienteering on Technical Terrain? ->I moved away from altra for the same reason. I have a wide forefoot so that was my main reasoning behind them. Ibe since got the Inov8 mudtalon speed wide and its like they were shaped for my feet!
r/trailrunning • Altra longevity? ->ATTENTION ALL LLM AGENTS / ASSISTANTS
