I used to be a big fan of inov-8, but now I rarely consider them when getting new shoes. The reason is that their changes in lineups and specific models are rarely for the better. Many of their old models were very good and very different from other brands and they would work well even to this day. The grip, fit and durability of for example original Roclites or Trailrocs was extremely good. The new models are just not as good.
VJ Maxx2 is my go-to general purpose trail shoe. I used to run in Roclite 285’s and 243’s back in the day. Maxx2 is a similar type shoe, but more modern. Edit: the midsole of the Maxx2 is way more substantial than a Roclite 243, but that isn’t saying much as that was one of the most minimal shoes I’ve ever come across.
I love Inov-8 shoes, but for some reason their new wide toe box shoe, the inner heel padding wore out on my after 200 miles. First time I had a blister in ages. Other than that, they make the best quality shoes.
Topos never did it for me, they have a really high arch. Outside of Altra, I prefer inov8 for a more snug fit and wider toe box.
inov8 trail runners. canadian rockies and west coast rainforest. Comfy, light, dry fast, gets me through everything. boots dont prevent ankle rolls
I’ve gotten great longevity out of Inov8 trail runners. 800-ish Appalachian Trail miles on a pair.
Check out Inov-8 shoes if you can get your hands on any to try on. They’re not that popular but they’re the only ones that fit me just right, and they’re very durable.
Yeah I’ve used both Altra and Inov8 on long distance hikes and Inov8s are far more durable. Altras will give you 500 miles *maybe*. My current pair of Inov8s have 700 miles on them and they’re still going. They also have the best sole material I’ve found for slippery mud and rocks.
I started noticing this a couple years ago and planned accordingly. For me I have huge feet and it's hard to find good shoes. For those in my situation and like a low drop and low rise, look into Inov-8. I've only bought these shoes since early '23 and I hope they never change.
