Merrell Agility Peak : good traction on rock and in the mud, durable Vibram sole, good cushion and dries pretty fast (remove the inner sole for faster drying). I tested the AP4 and AP5 which were pretty roomy for wider feet. I have not tested the Agility Peak 6. It's a good option to consider if the Hoka (too tight for me) or Altra (heel slippage issues) shoes don't fit you perfectly. I've also heard great things about trail shoes from Topo Athletic.

To be honest 10k steps a day mostly on pavement (but with some trails) sounds more like you need something with good cushion (to take the impact of pavement) and a bit of grip, but dont need a ton of ankle support or winter protection. Maybe look at trail running shoes as well as walking shoes. I have Merrell Agility Peak 4s (goretex) and I'm happy with them for traipsing round Yorkshire on walks that mix road/ canal/ woodland/ moors. I also like Hoka and Salomon's walking and trail running options. Although retail is often £120+ they're often on sale and the prior season's models are often discounted

I had the same problem. Merrell do a wide toe with a stack. They weren’t as wide as my Lone Peaks but wide enough

I’ve ran in Altras and I know Salomon’s are also very popular but after trying on a billion pairs I ended up going with the Merrell Agility Peaks and they were basically perfect out of the box. I know Merrell gets plenty of love for their hiking shoes but their trail runners are really solid for seemingly not being as popular. I also tried on a pair of Brooks and I think those would have been what I went with if I didn’t go with the Merrells. So if you can try stuff on instead of going with the most talked about ones you might be surprised. I absolutely hated how the Salomon’s fit for example!

But if may higher budget ka, you cant go wrong with Salomon Speedcross/Thundercross, Hoka Mafate/Speedgoat

I feel like I can speak almost directly to this. I have Salomon Thundercross which yes is a different shoe but I also have the Merrell Agility Peaks. Both are great shoes. The Thundercross have a much narrower toe box and just more narrow all around. Thick but stable mid sole and good lugs but I have slipped on wet rock and wooden bridges in them. I usually use them for shorter runs as I don’t think my feet could handle a longer run, in the narrower shoe. Agilith Peaks are my favorite shoe I’ve used so far. Wider toe box and midfoot. Thick and cushiony midsole. Nice lugs and also a bit more grip, I don’t slip as much in them. But because of the midsole being more cushiony, I have rolled my ankle, which I’m prone to rolling my ankle just walking so it’s not all on the shoe, just something to keep in mind. Also the upper seems to be wearing out quicker. I’ve already had to use shoe goo in both shoes where the upper at the sides has separated just a tiny bit where midfoot and toebox meet and the creases there. But it’s still my favorite shoe to run in for trials.

I have a pair of agility peak that the upper is disintegrating on with less than 80 miles on them.

I just started wearing the Merrell Nova and the Merrell Agility Peak. In my opinion the Nova are way more comfortable and the grip is great. Dont bother spending more money on the Agility Peak. They arent as comfortable and the grip is the same.
