Do they come in wide sizes? For reference, Merrill Moab originals are my go-to because they fit my feet. Comparison? That's the reason I'm thinking about trying Merrill Moab Speed 2s (or I guess they're up to 3, now). I'd try Topos, but I get bummed buying good shoes that don't fit. Right now I have a pair of $300 Thorogood work boots that ended up being too narrow. I had always bought Red Wing, but they seem to have been bought by private equity: what they sell now is synthetic uppers made in China. PS. Came back to ask, is Ultraventure 4 considered the UL hiking go-to? 5 mm drop.
Merrell Moabs are great. I’m currently wearing a pair of New Balance that were gifted to me; the Hierro trail runner; they’re also gortex and have vibram soles. They’re quite comfortable, breathable, grippy and light as a feather.
Just came back from Val Gardena area (Col Rodella/Antermoia/Vajolet Towers). I used my Merrill Trail runners but packed a pair of black Rothy Mary Janes for pre and post in Munich and Innsbruck. They pack up flat, go anywhere and are comfy for walking. Highly recommend if it's not too late!
Wearing my Merrell’s right now in Turkey. Over a week in and my feet feel perfect. They might not be pretty but you can’t beat not having your feet hurt.
"I know we all are looking for that UNICORN shoe that won’t look so Doofy when we are out walking and just browning shopping in cute Italian towns…. but can also do some light hikes." Honesty, I've sort of given up on not looking goofy from the ankle down while traveling. My feet are SO HATEFUL and nothing that I'd consider not doofy is both comfortable/practical and fashionable. I've pretty much resigned myself to having comfort in my ugly plain black men's Merrell trail runners and am crossing my fingers for a cute-ish sandal for dress days.
