I ran in both the Cloudultra 1 and 2 (3 is on the way, already big discounts). I love these shoes for everything that's not wet conditions. I find the grip to be lacking (but the Cloudultra 3 has another outsole and it looks better).
I switched from the lone peaks for probably 6-8 years after a bout of planter fasciitis. Pt recommended On clouds. I have been in the could ultra 2 and 3 with no issues. I also tore my Achilles while on Team Altra but never correlated the two.
On does make some solid trail shoes, but they tend to work best for mixed or moderate trails rather than really technical terrain. Models like the Cloudultra are designed more for long-distance trail running and ultra efforts. They’re known for being comfortable and breathable, and they handle gravel, dirt, and rocky trails fairly well with good grip and stability. But they aren't always ideal for very technical mountain trails. If you like the feel of your On road shoes, the Cloudultra or Cloudventure are probably the closest trail equivalents.
When I started trail running, I went with the Mafates - I thought they were a good middle ground trail shoe and they were great. Then I got the On CloudUltra and hated them - for all the hype they felt like running with cinder blocks for the soles. Now with Speedgoats.
I’ve been loving the On Cloudultras I moved initially from the speedgoats to the Brooks Catamounts though.
I had the cloud ultras trail running shoes and enjoyed them. I then started bumping my mileage up to 30-50ish miles a week so switched to the SG's to get more cushion. Never had a problem with rocks getting stuck tho.
Cloudultras are good but they don't have very robust grip do they? I've used for flat / sandy / dry trails but wouldn't think of taking onto anything rocky.
Had a pair they were ok, nothing special. The grip looks great but for some reason they were absolute shit in mud. Never figured out why.
Yes! I kept going back to them, like I said, I owned four pairs! I will see if I'm doing a harder or more challenging hike, I definitely grab my hiking boots. I'm also curious to try the On cloud trail runners. I have a pair of On cloud running shoes right now, and wore those on an easy hike and they were fabulous. I'd love to see the tread on the cloud trail runners though!
Try On cloud trail runners. They make waterproof versions. I have the on cloud mid hiking shoe.i need the extra ankle support due to an old injury. They are super comfortable for long hikes.
